Hi Adrian & List Members,

Steps for, Assigning A Keystroke To Adjust Punctuation On The Fly

1. Press, Insert + F2, to open the Jaws Manager.
2. Goto Keyboard Manager and press enter.
3. Navigate to Default, & then tab 1 time to get into the list of options.
4. In the Default keyboard manager list navigate to Set Punctuation Level If
it says none. That means there has not been a keystroke assigned.
5. Press the Alt key to open the menues, & right arrow to Action. Then down
arrow to Add Keystroke, & press enter. Or press control + A which is the
shortcut for asigning a keystroke.
6. Insert a keystroke combination like control + dash for example. If the
combination is already being used for another command jaws will tell you.
Doing this in the Default Keyboard Manager, allows this keystroke to be used
in all aplications.
7. Tab to the Okay button, press the spacebar, then a dialogue will open
asking if you are sure you want to modify the default JKM. Press the
spacebar on the Yes option.

Now, every time you press the control + dash keystroke it changes the
punctuation level. So press the control + dash keystroke until you hear the
punctuation level you want.

If you ever want to change or remove the keystroke, simply repeat the above
steps.

Take care.

Although this method involves a menu, it isn't onerous. Press JAWS key+v to
open the quick settings dialog. Then press p until JAWS verbalizes
"punctuation." On my system, it takes three presses of p once you arrow past

the edit field. Or you can type p in the edit field and three options
appear, the second of which is "punctuation." Press the spacebar to cycle
through the punctuation level choices, leave the one you want, tab to Okay
and press enter.

I don't know if a hotkey can be created for this operation.

Hi Everyone,
Is there any hot key that I can use, while I am reading something, turn
punctuation off and on, without going through any menus. Thanks.

RE: Jaws 16 Problem with Jaws delay !!

2015-08-31 Thread Jim Hamilton via Jfw
Hello:

If I understand the issue correctly, it sounds like you might need to change
your "typing echo" settings in JAWS for use with IE 11. Although the fact
that you hear "all" of what you typed into that field, sounds more like
something that would happen in that application. However, if it is
connected to "typing echo", insert+2 (upper-row of QWERTY keyboard) will
allow you to reset this setting to "character", "word", "word and
character", or "none. For this application, the setting "may" be on "none".
That would explain why you do not hear characters, or words, while you are
typing; but, I cannot explain why you do hear "all" of what you typed when
you have finished.

Nonetheless, in my view, it would be worth looking at the "typing echo"
setting for JAWS while you are actually in your IE 11. If you find that it
is set to "none", simply select your prefered setting, and save it for use
in that application. Please let me know if this works.

However, I'm finding that the control L command no longer works with

I have gotten to the point where I actually prefer Firefox to Internet

JAWS, iTunes, and questions

2015-08-31 Thread Jim Portillo via Jfw
Hello,

I have a couple of questions. I've not used iTunes in a while using my JAWS
computer with Windows 7 and JAWS 16. I need to learn three things to be
able to use my iPhone with this computer and version of JAWS.

First, how do I create a playlist with music I might already have on the
computer?

Second, how can I transfer things like music or movies?

Finally, how can I convert music that is mainly in mp3 format?

Again, it's been a while, and I need a refresher, especially with this new
iTunes and JAWS for it to work with my iPhone 6.

Thanks.

Create a test paragraph, using many of your more common punctuations. Then

Thanks.

4. In the Default keyboard manager list navigate to Set Punctuation Level If it
says none.
Doing this in the Default Keyboard Manager, allows this keystroke to be used in
all aplications.
7. Tab to the Okay button, press the spacebar, then a dialogue will open asking
if you are sure you want to modify the default JKM. Press the spacebar on the
Yes option.

Now, every time you press the control + dash keystroke it changes the
punctuation level. So press the control + dash keystroke until you hear the
punctuation level you want.

If you ever want to change or remove the keystroke, simply repeat the above
steps.

Take care.

I think the question is what changes do the different levels make? What are the
practical differences between all, some, most? Even none lets one or two
things slip through--the apostrophe, for example.

Kimsan,

Give it a try. Creating a test paragraph is actually a mind-stimulating

to use it, just as Narrator or the other one that starts with "N".

Subject: newest emails on top

Using outlook 2013, when having emails grouped in conversations, I'm
wondering is it duable to have the latest reply at the top?

Let me give an example.

On this other list, there is a conversation with 40 emails, but when a
reply comes in, I have to go to the email in the conversation it's
replying to in order to read it.

 That could be like email number 26 and that is tons of down arrowing;
however, with outlook 2013 there is the unread button to list all of
your unread emails but just wondering if what I'm trying to ask is
possible.

RE: Contacting Netflix about accessibility issues.

2015-08-31 Thread Gudrun Brunot via Jfw
Hi Tim: I wrote. Come on, folks, Tim's letter is good. You can modify it to
address what your beef is. Mine was that when I want to order discs from a
series, I can click on the series but not on the episodes themselves. I could
never order disc 2, or 3, without sighted assistance. I haven't checked out the
website too recently, but I've also chimed in on the audio description bit.

Subject: Contacting Netflix about accessibility issues.

Hi All,

I took Genni's advice, and called Netflix at 877-742-1480. As I expected, the
person answering the general call line had no suggestions. She did however
give me the email address for posting questions to their engineer group. The
address is:
technicalresea...@netflix.com

I also recommend anyone who wishes to use Netflix contact them, either at the
phone number below, or the email address above.

In case anyone is interested, below is what I wrote to Netflix. I am not
claiming this as anything more than it is, a quick note of frustration, with
some ideas for them. Here is what I wrote:

Dear Netflix,

I am blind, and use a Windows 7 laptop. Up until a week or so ago, your web
site was extremely hard to navigate, but at least I could start a video.
Now, after your web page design changes implemented a few days ago, I cannot
even start a video.

I am using the latest update of JAWS version 16; JAWS is the world’s most
widely used screen reading software for the blind. I tried accessing your
service with IE, Firefox, and Chrome, but could not get a video to start.
With IE, I cannot even activate my profile.

I am a reasonably experienced Internet user, and if there is a way to navigate
your site with a screen reader, I have not figured it out. I am using the
recommended common settings for JAWS, and I have no problems with some other
video streaming services.

Back a few weeks ago, Netflix announced the addition of audio description.
That is a great move, and I applaud you for that. However, in a very ironic
twist, it is not possible for a blind person to select the audio described
version, even though one is on the part of your site that contains only audio
described programs. Why add that extra step? If one is on the audio
description page, the user obviously wants the audio described version, so why
not make that the default?

In general, there seems to be a huge gap between your marketing department and
the technology group. Netflix marketing is advertising this new and wonderful
audio description service, but a blind person simply cannot navigate the site,
especially after the rollout of your new web page design.

In closing, I am using a Windows laptop, and I do not have a smart phone.
The issues I am asking you to please fix are just for us old-fashioned blind
folks using a Windows computer.

I know from experience that screen reader accessibility is a very narrow
specialty and skill set, so if you do not have such an expert on staff, you
could either hire one or contract with one of the accessibility consultant
experts that will help you become and stay accessible.

I am happy to volunteer by helping you test any changes; I have done that in
the past for a number of web service companies. Please advise, and much thanks.

Sincerely,
Tim Ford

I also am having trouble with Netflix. I can no longer access the search field.
I have spoken to both the DVD customer service line and to the streaming
customer service line.

The customer service number is
(877) 742-1480
You will be asked to go online to get a service code to speed things up. Not
necessary. Just stay on the line and someone will answer.

We all need to call Netflix about this issue.

I know where it is at. Originally it was on ascending.
I'm not thinking its you and not "explaining" well, instead I think there is
more to it. I'm thinking the ascending/descending not working applies to
the emails in this case in the conversation view. I wonder if it will work
if I removed the conversation view, but that would take 40 days and 40
nights to delete all the emails I have coming in lol.

Did you press Alt V, V, S and then Tab to Sort. I had a problem about
arrowing and tabbing, but arrowing got me to Sort, I believe, then Tabbing
got me to the Option, where Ascending and Descending were. On mine,
Descending was checked; I checked Ascending. Right now I am not good enough
in Outlook 2013 to give the clearest instructions, but it is annoying, if
you want your messages with the oldest first and are getting them with the
newest first. I hope you can get it done this time.

Best from,

P.S. Kimsan, I tried while in an e-mail, but that command in a message runs
Spell Check like F 7. I thought I'd check it before sending. I did find out
that that first V puts you on the upper Ribbon, so when you get to the S,
Tab to Assending and Descending.

Using outlook 2013, when having emails grouped in conversations, I'm
wondering is it duable to have the latest reply at the top?

Let me give an example.

On this other list, there is a conversation with 40 emails, but when a reply
comes in, I have to go to the email in the conversation it's replying to in
order to read it.

  That could be like email number 26 and that is tons of down arrowing;
however, with outlook 2013 there is the unread button to list all of your
unread emails but just wondering if what I'm trying to ask is possible.

RE: Issue with creating accessible PDF files.

2015-08-31 Thread Gudrun Brunot via Jfw
I have that problem, too. Often when I open pdf files I've downloaded from a
service. What I sometimes get away with is having a sighted person open the
file, so that JAWS doesn't get a chance to process it. Then, the sightling
highlights all the text, copies it, pastes it into Notepad, and the text is
improved.

Same thing happens with some pdf files opened in Braillenote. It does matter
more than you'd think, for the reading gets really affected.

Mike,

I've seen this with PDF files created by others, so it's not necessarily
something you're doing wrong. Reading the rendered document very often does
result in words being glued together, and I'm not sure if they were
originally separated by line breaks.

Best solution I've found is to use Freedom Import Printer to render into
text.

But again I think your document is fine, even if it reads weird. Have you
printed it and checked with Openbook, or showed to a sighted person?

Hi folks! I'm having an issue with creating an accessible PDF document. I
am able to create the document, and save it as a PDF file. When I pull up
the PDF file, JAWS reads it, but I'm noticing that the words are run
together, and JAWS tries to pronounce the words as one word, because there
is no space between the two or three words. It appears that JAWS is reading
this correctly. My concern is that somehow in the translation, the words
are being run together. How do you keep this from happening? Is there a
way to make these words have spaces between them?

Not that it'll help with the accessibility issue which I've written to
and spoke to them on the phone about, but you can always call them and
order the discs you want. They are more than happy to do this for you.
I've done it myself a few times and they were very helpful.
I know it doesn't help accessibility but at least you can get what you
want. Hope this helps a little.

Sincerely,
Tim Ford

You will be asked to go online to get a service code to speed things up. Not

If you ever want to change or remove the keystroke, simply repeat the above
steps.

Take care.

Holy crap bro!
That was amazing! I just did it and it worked.

Now, is there a list that will tell me what punctuation will be spoken for
the different levels?
Thanks again, checks in the mail.

Hello, everyone.

Typically, with Firefox, I use the control L command, after which I can
paste a web site address into the edit box, and hit enter. I'm then able to
open The web site from that point.

However, I'm finding that the control L command no longer works with
Firefox 40.

Has anyone noticed this change, and are there good work-arounds?

I have gotten to the point where I actually prefer Firefox to Internet

I'm using Jaws 16 and Windows 7 here.

Thank you.

I'm running a Surface Pro. All Jaws functions that I use are working as
expected. Windows crashes on occasion, but the fact that Jaws 16 re-starts
is a major step forward when this occurs. I have had to do a few Jaws
repairs and had some other issues with Office 365, but overall, I'm very
pleased with the Surface. I find that a Bluetooth keyboard is preferable
over using the surface's keyboard cover. Howevewr, when I need to charge
the keyboard, the cover is better than not having a keyboard to use.

Is anyone else finding Firefox switching tabs on its own?

Night is the beta version of Aurora, and Aurora is the beta version for

Currently night is at version 42 i think, aurora is in 41, and standard in 40.
here you can try with the Aurora.

Re: Firefox 40 question

2015-08-31 Thread Brad Martin via Jfw
I had that problem for a long time on some websites, but it hasn't
happened to me in months! When I used to have that problem, it was
generally when I had a tab open (but I wasn't on that tab), and that tab
kept refreshing itself. When it refreshed, Firefox would start to read
it and JAWS would act like I was on that tab, but in fact, I wasn't and
interacting with the screen I thought was in front of me didn't work.
But again, I can't remember the last time I had that problem.

Oddly, tonight my Firefox started crashing, and I realized my Adblock
add-on had been disabled.

Re: Firefox 40 question

2015-08-31 Thread Brad Martin via Jfw

Tom and Gennie,

Control L is working fine for me with Firefox 40.0.3. I have had a
couple of occasions where it didn't work for some reason, but they're
few and far between. To Gennie's point about Firefox crashing, I
discovered that the ads were most of the problem. I installed the
Adblock add-on for Firefox, and most of my crashes went away.
Occasionally a video will cause Firefox to crash even still, but it's
way better than it was without Adblock. (Not to be confused with
Adblock+ which I have not tried.)

Tom, I often enter a URL (or paste one) into the Windows Run box. So
press Windows key and the letter r, then type or paste in the URL. If
Firefox is not your default browser, the process is a little different.
Press Windows key and the letter r, then type

firefox url
for instance
firefox www.google.com

There's your work around if you need it.

Jaws talking a little too much in Windows 10

2015-08-31 Thread Maria S via Jfw
Hi all. I first got this computer and Windows 8.1 was installed. I
always set my Jaws verbosity to intermediate and turn off tutor
messages. When I upgraded to Windows 10, I noticed that when I press
alt tab Jaws says something like "task switching, running
applicationslist box, name of program, number of apps". Maybe it did
this in Win8and I didn't notice but it's driving me nuts. I usually
only have a couple of windows open and I feel like I'm waiting forever
just to know which one I have in focus.

Does anyone have an idea what I can adjust to minimize how much of
this window information Jaws is giving me?

I also switched my synthesizer to a Vocalizer voice, and especially in
Twitter, some tweets just won't read. Sometimes the message starts
with an @ sign, as if in a reply, but sometimes it doesn't. I can't
figure this out. If anyone else is having this problem I'd be curious
to know if you've figured out how to trigger it.

Thanks, Maria

I wonder if it has anything to do with the granularity controls--beginner,
intermediate, advanced. Each has a whole list of options, although I don't

Re: Firefox 40 question

2015-08-31 Thread majno via Jfw

Firefox has 3 version. Night, Aurora and Standard.

Night is the beta version of Aurora, and Aurora is the beta version for
Standard.
Currently night is at version 42 i think, aurora is in 41, and standard
in 40.

here you can try with the Aurora.
