I certainly don't see what all the hoopla is all about. It supposed to

The one thing about it that bugs me is that when you're at the end of a
table and arrow down, instead of being placed at the end of that table on
the webpage, you're placed at the bottom of the webpage entirely. This is
especially annoying as you don't' know you're out of the table until you
arrow out of it. Maybe it's something I'm doing wrong on my end and simple
lack of familiarity with the feature, but it has been a frustrating
experience on sites like Amazon.com product pages or banking account
activity pages. All in all though, I do find Smart Navigation to be a plus
but for this issue.

Ann,

Based on the Podcast from FS, it helps us more readily "see" the actual
layout of a web page by revealing it's layout. Also gives additional tools
to navigate these areas. I've not explored it much yet, but in time I'll
likely give it a shot.

Because the tutorial is an MP3 file, you must save it in the Audio+Podcasts

there were no longer a series of radio buttons on the shipping options page
to choose the desired shipping method, which, of course, would be free
shipping, which is not usually checked by default. Even though there was no

obvious means of selecting one of the four listed shipping options, I hit
Enter on the first option anyway, free shipping, and this apparently worked,

because free shipping is what I got. But it is also possible that this
option was already selected by default. Amazon is constantly tinkering with

its web site, much to the detriment of us blind consumers. But it is almost

impossible to challenge them because Jeff Bezos, recently ranked as the
fifth wealthiest person in the US, is an absolute control freak who always

Re: Bug with temporary speech rate change?

2015-09-25 Thread Maria Campbell via Jfw
I have always noticed the rate change back to original rate when
switching between programs.
However, if you press the control plus windows and alt keys together
with the page up or page down keys you can quickly set your speech rate
on the fly.

On 9/25/2015 6:27 PM, Paul Martz via Jfw wrote:

Hi all. I'm using current JAWS v16. My question regards the ability to
temporarily change the speech rate with CONTROL + ALT + PageUp or PageDown.

I expected this setting to stick with the application while it was running.
In other words, if I set a slow rate in Outlook, but a fast rate in Internet
Explorer, then I should be able to switch between those two programs with
ALT + TAB and have either slow or fast speech depending on which program has
focus. If I exit the program and restart it, then I'd expect the speech rate
to be restored to the default. But while the program is running, I'd expect
the temporary speech rate setting to stay in effect, even after I switch
back to the program from somewhere else.

What I see instead: Switching away from a program then back to it with ALT +
TAB seems to cause JAWS to forget about the temporary speech rate setting
for that program. Text from the program is then read at the default speech
rate rather than my temporary setting. Note that I'm not exiting the
program. It's still running, I'm just changing focus with ALT+TAB away, then
back to the running program again. But JAWS seems to have forgotten the
temporary speech rate that I had set for that program.

If I'm not mistaken, it has been sticky for the program up until some
relatively recent JAWS update, and now I'm getting this new behavior where
JAWS forgets about the speech rate setting after switching away and back.
Has it always worked this way, and I'm somehow mistaken? Or is this a bug?
-Paul

The problem with anti-virus products is that they are not standardized to be

It's basically that simple. Although blind people should be as secure as

Dacia, the best way to do a JAWS repair is to download the build of JAWS
that you are running. For instance if you're trying to repair JAWS 16, go
to the web-site and download the current build of JAWS 16. Once you have it
downloaded, navigate to the place where you downloaded the file. Then you
will want to copy the path. You will do this by pressing shift plus the
applications key. Then navigate to the option that says copy path. Once
you select this option by pressing enter, the file name is copied to your
clipboard. Now, press Windows plus the letter R to bring up the run dialog
box. Press control plus the letter V to paste the name of the file into the
run dialog. Then, you will need to enter the following switch command at
the end of the file name.
/type repair
Then press enter, or tab to Ok, and press enter. The JAWS repair process
should begin.
Hope this helps!

Re: Volume for YouTube with IE11

2015-08-26 Thread Maria Campbell via Jfw
If you have Windows 7 and possibly higher, you can access the YouTube
volume as follows.

Go to system tray and find speaker icon and press enter on volume mixer.
Then tab to volume for YouTube and raise or lower with up or down arrows.

I've now confirmed that the solution is to raise the volume on the YouTube page

Hi, the volume slider on the YouTube player can be accessed with IE11 by
turning off the virtual cursor then tabbing or in my case shift tabbing until
you reach the player controls. When you have tabbed to the player controls
tab to the volume slider and the slider will work with the arrow keys as long
as you have the virtual cursor turned off. This method also works with the
forward and back slider.

Re: What do I gain with Windows 10 as a blind person?

2015-08-09 Thread Maria Campbell via Jfw
Windows 10 is an indication of the future of Microsoft with the
introduction of Cortana and the Edge browser. There's no getting around
that, no matter if and when one upgrades. And these two new features
will revolutionize Windows computing when they are perfected.
There are always growing pains with a new system, and the sooner one
deals, the better, especially considering free versus having to pay the
longer one waits.

That is the value of this list, helping with those growing pains.

unavoidable.

Hi Brad,

I purchased a new laptop last November, a Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 running Windows
8.1. While I did get accustomed to Windows 8.1, I wasn't crazy about it. I
updated to Windows 10, and like the fact that the start menu is back. When I
press the Windows key, I am placed in a search field, similar to Windows 7.
If I down arrow, I am placed in a list of my 6 most used programs, which is
really convenient. I am finding Cortana to work quite well... when she isn't
able to answer my query, she opens up a search page in Bing... wish the
search results could be switched to Google, but at least for now, Bing is
the only choice.

I am looking forward to trying Edge once Jaws support is available for it.

I think whether or not to update to Windows 10 is a very personal choice,
and, I also feel that we shouldn't be advised not to update just because we
use Jaws. Having said that though, I don't think I would have updated if my
laptop wasn't fairly new.

I've been reading the various forums and many people are experiencing
troubles with the Windows 10 update, not only users of assistive technology,
so, as I say, the choice to update is a personal one.

For me, I'm glad I updated, but we'll see how things go once Microsoft
starts pushing out those updates! Ha ha.

Like you say, fun, fun, fun! :)

Hi,

I've been following all this Windows 10 stuff with great interest, and I
just have a question (with a lot of background first):

So FS says you shouldn't use Edge, you should use Firefox or IE. (I'm
doing that now in Windows 7.) You can't use the built in mail program;
you should use something like Thunderbird or Outlook. (I'm doing that
now in Windows 7.) And you should use Adobe Reader for PDF documents.
(I'm doing that now in Windows 7.) Reviews I've read all seem to
indicate that Cortana is iffy at best.

So why should I upgrade again? I'm not being smart; I'd really like to
know if I'm going to gain anything other than having a new operating
system that I have to use in the same old ways. The only benefit I can
see is that Windows 10 will be supported beyond January of 2020, where
Windows 7 will not. Am I overlooking some wonderful new feature that
should cause me to want to hurry and upgrade? Or does the old saying,
If it ain't broke, don't fix it, apply here? I'd really honestly like
to know if JAWS users in particular are finding anything beneficial in
the upgrade, or if it's just something fun to do to your functioning
computer to see if it will still function.

P.S. Anybody on this list from Louisiana and thinking Cortana, as in mall?

Hi, Carolyn. Sometimes this can be cleared up by going into your
e-mail program's encoding menu and changing how the e-mail is
decoded. Other times not much helps.

Sometimes the encoding is in Western European Windows. Sometimes it
is in Western European ISO. Sometimes it is in Unicode 7 or 8. You
just have to experiment, viewing the e-mail in various decoding
methods and see what works.

Hi,
My goodness all of this excitement. I'm running the latest build of the
program with JFW 16 and though some things have changed all is going just
fine. I was able to explore various options, send a chat message to someone
and even see where to initiate a call should I have wished to do so and all
of that even without being sure I'm running the latest Skype scripts from
Doug.
Deep cleansing breaths and reasonable thought processes are a good thing.
Happy Saturday one and all.

I have never been a big fan of Skype, but the new features in Skype, as
advertised in an email message I received having a subject line similar to
the above, made it tempting.

So, I read further. Apparently, the old Skype will no longer be supported.

Being one always willing to jump for the bleeding edge, I gave it a try. In
fairness, I didn't try to work with it for very long, but this has to rank
right up there with the most inaccessible products I've seen on the market
in the last decade. The thing brings up a list of options that one can
read, but none of them works. Even worse, Skype hangs around and cannot be
removed even with Alt-F4. I almost entitled this message, Is Skype really
a virus? Fortunately, after going to the Control Panel, it was fairly easy
to get rid of the thing. Now, my computer is working normally, but I really
thought I had inadvertently introduced a virus to my computer (Windows 8.1).
I'm using JAWS 16.

So, except for those with some sight (probably quite a bit) and those with
psychological needs to inflict punishment upon themselves, I would recommend
to people that they bypass the tempting advertisements in the Skype email
message that is likely to appear in your Inbox soon - if it has not appeared
already.

Re: PlaceMarkers and JAWS

2015-06-14 Thread Maria Campbell via Jfw
Place markers are the greatest things since the wheel, to my thinking.
I use them all the time and have no problems. I just anchor to text and
leave the domain checked.

On 6/14/2015 5:00 AM, Ed Marquette via Jfw wrote:

I'm wondering if there is a strategy to ensure that PlaceMarkers
always work. Frankly, the PlaceMarkers I have set tend to remain,
but the k key, which is supposed serially to jump from placeMarker
to PlaceMarker often skips PlaceMarkers that I know are there.
Sometimes, after JAWS has skipped over a PlaceMarker I can hit
shift K to go backwards, and sometimes JAWS will find the shy
PlaceMarker. Sometimes it does not.

Years ago, I had the same problem with WindowEyes, and have been
assuming that PlaceMarkers are just flakey and not terribly
reliable because of the peculiarities of the Net.

No one has told me that, and it occurred to me that I perhaps am
doing something wrong.

Here is what I do:

1. Press Control plus windows plus K

2. Choose Add PlaceMarker

3. accept the default name, link to text, use the default text
(if I know it is going to be constant), and choose domain only if
I know the element will always be on screen within the
application.

Linking to text seems like it ought to increase the reliability of
the PlaceMarker, but I do not think that is true. Is it possible
that the opposite is true?

I think I'm making the right choice in indicating when it should
be linked to the domain instead of the specific page, but perhaps
my thinking is backwards.

If everyone else has the same reliability issues, then I'll
continue with my thought that PlaceMarkers are just flakey.

Re: Jaws 15 Problem in window7

2015-05-25 Thread Maria Campbell via Jfw
The start up wizard for checking the state of JAWS at start up is under
the help menu when you press insert j.
Sometimes you need to reset the hotkey control plus alt plus j to
restart JAWS after a shut down.
Another way I use to start up JAWS is to press the windows key plus m
several times to make sure I get to the desktop. Then I just press the
letter j for jaws and Jaws starts up in a bit.

Can I suggest a less drastic solution? You just might have a message or

two

that you'll wish you'd read. Instead of deleting them all with control-a,
delete, do a search for a source you'll be comfortable losing. For

example,

to bring up all the messages you got from this list, do the following:

Place focus at the message list in the inbox.

Press shift-control-f.

Tab five times to the edit field for the to line. Type jfw. Press enter.
This will bring up all messages sent to this list.

Eventually, JAWS will verbalize Find now. Press F6 to go to the list of
JFW messages.

Now press control-a, then the delete key. You'll be asked to confirm, so
press enter. Press escape to get out of the dialog.

Now your inbox will be a lot lighter.

You may have another huge source of messages. Just follow this procedure,
changing only the search term.

Except sometimes a word in the subject field will be the term you need. In
that case, tab just once after pressing shift-control-f to land in that

edit

field. If you want to search for a word in the From field, tab three

times

after pressing control-shift-f.

I hope this approach gives you a little more peace of mind. I'd hate to

miss

that one important or touching message someone sent.

Re: deleteing inbox

I have a different email program. However, you may be able to do the
same thing as I do. You can do the control A to accept all then press
the delete button which puts them in the trash folder. Then in the
files menu there is a choice to empty trash to get rid of all.
One other way if you really want them all gone in one fell swoop is to
press your control a to accept all, then press shift plus delete key to
bypass trash folder.

Hi. This morning I'm unable to access a credit card account at Bank of
America. After logging in and clicking on the text version of my latest
statement, I get a message to the effect, We're unable to complete your
request at this time. I've had this problem in the past at BofA with IE.
After I got that message numerous times, a bank tech support rep determined
I could access the account with Firefox. As far as she was concerned, that
was sufficient. Since then, I've been able to access the account with IE.
However, this morning neither browser works.

Does anyone else have this experience? Any suggestions? Several people here
have reported positive online experiences with BofA, but I always find it
frustrating.

Unless it's different than with JAWS 13 and the other versions I've had, for

You'll have to arrow through a lot of other options, but when you find it,

While in a document, hit Insert 2 on the number keys above qwerty. It will give

often to hit insert escape in order to refresh the screen on web sites
such
as Amazon because buttons or other options are not showing themselves.
In
fact last night I spent more than fifteen minutes in my checkout
procedure
trying to switch from my default credit card to a different debit card
on
amazon. The Change option would not show itself no way no how. Finally
after
a great deal of frustration the insert escape made the change option
available and I was able to choose another card and finish checking
out.
What should have taken two minutes took almost twenty. This is nothing
new
with Jaws and amazon. And I don't know if it is a Jaws thing, an
amazon
thing, a coding thing, or what.

Because it occurs even if Magic is running.

Hello.

I suspect the problem that they corrected was the problem where JAWS for
Windows was restarting over three times a day. At least I have not seen
this on my machine. Since the latest update, and I was seeing it very

Unfortunately, the release notes for this update are very generic; all
FS says is that it corrects an issue that had been made known to the
company through automatic error reporting. While this suggests that the
update is minor, the timing of its release is quite thought-provoking,
as it hasn't been too long since the previous update came out. Besides,
why would FS release an update that addresses only one issue? To my
knowledge, this has never happened before.

Not sure about the games in the link I sent yesterday, but there are many
multi player games that one or more people can play on the same computer.
One good website is for Jim Kitchens audio games, it contains games such as
monopoly, game of life and many more that are multi player and also some
really good fun single player games such as golf, driving games and many
more. All games are again free on his site , although all of jim kitchen's
games don't actually require jaws as they are all self-voicing using the

I play a lot of audio games on my PC and iPhone , everything from card

using either jaws or my phones screen reader , would definitely recommend
trying a couple of audio games for yourself .

As for the spoonville games, I took a look at their website and they have a
section for blind games which will all either work with jaws or be
self-voicing and use the built in computer voice, also all the blind games
on the site are free too. in fact after taking a look at their website I

Hello list members,

I just purchased a new keyboard. An issue that I am having, (which I've had
in one way or another (most often with new keyboards is that when typing
spaces between words are not recognized. Also, letters are often left out of
some words, (particularly the U in the word You. As a result, even with
shorter email messages, or Word documents, I'm using spell check (sometimes
8-10 times to add a missing letter to a specific word, or to insert a space
between words.

It may be that I am typing too lightly and need to press harder on the
keyboard when I am typing and inserting spaces between words. I don't know?
What I do know is that this is frustrating. Is there a command within JAWS
that can fix this issue, or reduce its frequency of occurrence?

I would appreciate any help with this.

I believe this has happened to me in the past, thus messing up some of

Good evening Maria and everyone,
All worked well for a week until we came home one evening. Avast said
it detected a threat. Later we discovered that it removed JAWS.
Freedom Scientific told me that this is a know issue with Avast. It
can only be remedied with assistance from Avast. It sounds like we
need to urge developers of antivirus and other computer protection
pacakges to redesign their products so they will not detect assistive
software as threats. Avast works well with JFW under Windows XP.

for a free dictionary,
you can do a define word in the google search box even if it is
misspelled, it will work.
it will give you the correct spelling, pronounciation, whether it is
verb, noun, etc; there is even a listen button to hear how it is
supposed to sound.

I use it all the time.

Dear Joe and All,

I am experiencing the same problems you are as a result of updating to
iTunes 12.1. In addition, as I navigate through the list of
artists/albums,

JAWS simply announces unlabeled, making this task impossible. Based on
these observations and posts found on AppleVis forums, I must say that
iTunes has become unusable with JAWS, at least when it comes to
navigating
the iTunes library; I haven't tested the new version with the iTunes
store.
What scares me even more, though, is that WindowEyes users are
complaining
about the update as well, given that, as you may recall, GW Micro's
screen

reader was the first to support iTunes for Windows, and that even after
support was extended to JAWS and NVDA, Apple continued to recommend
WindowEyes for blind users accessing iTunes with a pc.

With that in mind, we JAWS users need to act! As soon as I send this
message, I will call Apple's accessibility line, and I strongly advise
you

to do the same. Apple obviously needs to hear from us, and the more
complaints the company gets, the more likely it is to address this issue.
The toll-free phone number for the helpline that serves customers who use
assistive technology is (877) 204-3930.

In the meantime, consider exploring the following options:
1. Fortunately, iTunes 12.1 still works quite well with Nonvisual
Desktop
Access (NVDA), a free, open-source screen reader that, at times, is
capable

of reading things neither JAWS nor WindowEyes can handle.
2. If you don't want to try NVDA, consider downloading and installing
the

BlindTunes JAWS scripts. If you choose to do this, please keep in mind,
however, that these scripts were written for iTunes 11, so they may or
may

not continue to work as expected, or at all.
3. Finally, if you don't like either option, ask Apple if they can
help you

go back to a previous version of iTunes. They may be able to do this for
you if you can explain your situation to them.

Good Luck!

Michal

Hi, Rahul. I believe this is caused by scripts which are supposed to render the

Hi all,

I consider this a very important petition, however, I do not wish to start a
discussion on whether or not this will do away with blindness products, the
attempt as such will fail, or any other messages of a similar nature.

Someone started a petition calling on Microsoft to incorporate a real screen

This should include maintenance and installing capabilities.
The link is here:

Hey Kim.

I just looked up this which you might find useful

To quickly locate a specific form control press INSERT+F5. This command
lists all form controls and their contents on the current page. Move through
the list and press ENTER to move to the selected control. Forms mode is
automatically enabled so you are ready to make changes to the control. And
if you have already entered information in a long form, use the Forms List
to quickly review the information.

This page has more details and other info that might help. Let us all know
if you get it to work and how...it seems to be a problem we all run into...

Kimsan, if you're on Amazon, I encountered this problem several months ago.
I think the solution involved a ridiculous amount of trial-and-error,
ultimately leaving me uncertain until I placed the order and quickly checked
my account before the 30-minute cancellation window expired.

You might consider giving up and doing the transaction via phone, if that's
an option for you. In the process, you can complain on behalf of all of us

a certain level.

To my mind, the best way of handling annoyingly complex webpages that I plan to
return to is to use the JAWS navigation keys and make mental notes. I note
whether h works for headers, if 1 gets me where I want, how many times I need
to press n to get to the first line of text, and so on. To give another
example, when I'm on the Audible.com cart page, I immediately skip past the
clutter by pressing x for checkbox. Audible has a checkbox for every item in
the cart, so I land right away in that list. sometimes pressing f or e gets me
where I need. Combine these navigation keys with placemarkers, and I just zip
around familiar websites. Much, much simpler than going through the flexible
web process, and by the way, a lot more flexible.

Hi, Rick. Flexible web is a feature within JAWS, beginning I believe in
JAWS14 which allows customization of viewing a web page so that parts of

time to get to the parts of a web page which the user actually wishes to

It didn't work for me. I was going nuts with a female voice that mispronounced
a lot of words and made it very difficult to edit. I couldn't make it use
different ppitches for lc and upper case letters. I tried everything and had a
lot of feedback from this list but nothing worked. I guess we just had
different experiences.

It did work in JAWS 15 because I use it regularly. I have been using JAWS
since 1998 and I can't remember when that feature didn't work. I still use
JAWS 16 on a limited basis because I am waiting for some bugs to be worked out.
I think it will be great in the next release.

Thanks. My grandson set it up for me. In Jaws 15 I couldn't get the

JAWS has had those features for several versions now. I would guess
they were not set up in the past or were changed. I am glad they are
working for your grandson now.

letters is higher than lower case letters! Don't ask me why these
wonderful advantages suddenly appeared, but they did. Judith

Does our JAWS serial number reflect when we started with JAWS?
I think I also started in '98 and the last two numbers in my serial
number are 98.
