RE: one-handed keyboard?

2015-11-20 Thread Mcginnis, Barbara via Jfw
We have a keyboard that is called a Half Qwerty keyboard and we also have a
small keyboard made by Datalux. Unfortunately, it does not appear that these
are available anymore. The Datalux is about 8 1/2 by 11--the exact size of a
piece of paper.

Hello Listmembers,

Having just purchased a laptop , I would like to use Windows 365, as my wife
has access to this program through her graduate school. Are there any issues in
configuring Windows365 or any other set up issues that I need to be aware of?

I have also considered using open source alternatives for Word, Excel and
PowerPoint in lieu of Windows 365. If I go this route, I would appreciate any
recommendations with regard to an open source option that offers the
aforementioned programs.

Best, Justin

Hi all.
Here is a drop box link to a folder with 24 tutorials concerning how to install

Hello,

The best way is to search the web for Windows 10 and the word "guide" or other
words like "basic", "easy" or "beginner".

The web is your best bet and learn to use it. There is a lot of information out
there.

RE: Potentially a bug with JAWS 17 on Word 2013 with Windows 10

2015-11-02 Thread Mcginnis, Barbara via Jfw
I thought the question was fonts in Office 2013 with Windows 10. I know
Control plus D deletes a message in Outlook but I thought the entire thread was
about Word.

I think there's confusion between Outlook and word. In Outlook, control-d
inside a message deletes it, unless the message is in the drafts folder. In
Word, control-d brings up the fonts dialog. To my knowledge, control-d has
never meant delete in Word.

Wrinkle: On my system, with word and Outlook coordinated, control-d also brings
up the fonts dialog when focus is on an open message in the drafts folder.

Adrian, I am amazed. Both Control-Shift-F, as well as Control-D worked for me

also tried it with the Shift-F-10, which works. As my husband has said there
are usually at least two ways to do anything on a computer. I likd Control-D,
but thought that was Delete.

Incidentally, just to see if it would work, the Delete Key on my Six Pack works
as the JAWS Key, the same as the Delete Key on the Num Pad.

Hi, Feliciano.

I understand your point about your clients' preference, but for me, the
simplest way of getting to the font dialog is with control-shift-f or
control-d. Both shortcuts do the same thing in a single keystroke-I have no
idea why the duplication. Maybe your clients would like being spared some

Those of you in academia, business, or government be on the lookout. As most
probably know, the new Office is in circulation, and Microsoft is offering it
for $9.95; that's even cheaper than last time. Look for a notice in your
mailbox. I don't know of any super new feature(s), but that's pocket change

RE: Appending to the clipboard.

2015-10-20 Thread Mcginnis, Barbara via Jfw
When I use Control + C or Control plus X, it keeps everything that I have
copied or cut from the time I turn on the computer until the time I turn off
the computer on the clipboard. I just press Alt plus H and then FO to access
the clipboard. Then I press F-6 to get to the clipboard and use the down arrow
to go through the dialog box. It works for me. I use JAWS 15 and Office
365/13.

Subject: Re: Appending to the clipboard.

Hi Adrian & Mario,

I got this from the Jaws help files, the append text to clipboard keystroke has
changed in later versions of Jaws to, Insert / Jaws Key, Windows Key, +
C:

Using FSClipboard
FSClipboard extends the functionality of the Windows Clipboard. When you use
the Windows Copy (CTRL+C) or Cut (CTRL+X) commands to place text on the
Clipboard, it replaces any text already there. When using the FSClipboard
feature, text that you copy is added to any text that you have previously
copied to the Clipboard. This allows you to continue adding text to the
Clipboard until you are ready to paste it into a document. You can only copy
text with the FSClipboard feature.

To add text to the Clipboard, select it using the text selection commands, and
then press WINDOWS Key+C. The text is appended to the end of any text already
on the Clipboard. To paste all the text that you have placed on the Clipboard
so far, use the Windows Paste command (CTRL+V). The text is inserted into your
document at the current location of the cursor. Each block of text that you
copied is separated by a blank line.

Note: If you attempt to add the same selection of text to the Clipboard more
than once, the text is not added. This feature is intended to reduce
unintentional duplication.

All formatting is removed from text that you copy using the FSClipboard
feature. This can be useful in programs like Microsoft Word if you do not want
to include styles, numbering, and other formatting information when you paste
text into a document.

If you want to replace all of the text on the Clipboard with a new text
selection, use CTRL+C or CTRL+X instead of WINDOWS Key+C. JAWS asks if you want
to overwrite your previously saved items. Choose Yes to replace all the text on
the Clipboard with the new selection.

Take care.
Mike

No one seems to have answered, so I'll do so: Yes. There's a way you can now
navigate the clipboard, but I don't remember what it is. Maybe worth a look
at the JAWS training material, or searching for the topic via Google, which
I usually find quicker than most internal search engines.

RE: notepad++ not working right with JAWs

2015-10-16 Thread Mcginnis, Barbara via Jfw
I have not used Notepad plus plus but when I googled shortcut keys for the
program, it did show that Control plus G is supposed to launch the find line
dialog. Apparently, notepad plus plus is only for programming. I have learned
something new today. I did not know that open source had a program called
notepad plus plus. Thank you.

Does anyone on this list use notepad++ (notepad plus plus)? Notepad seems to
work fine, but I need to jump to particular lines with Control-G to fix compile
errors when programming. Jaws misreads text unpredictably and/or just says
blank. Any ideas?

Hi folks! I've been dealing with this issue for quite a while now, and cannot
seem to get any relief. I'm having trouble with JAWS and Outlook 2013,
particularly after I have been using it for a couple of hours.
JAWS will start to perform very sluggishly, and even sometimes, I get a message
saying that Outlook is not responding. It's really annoying.
Most of the time, I end up restarting my machine. Does anyone else have this
problem?
How have you addressed it?

Sometimes I just unload JAWS with Insert plus F-4 and Enter and then load JAWS

the first thing I try when JAWS does not perform as I think it should--voice

What this option does is to reduce the current number of tasks being performed
by the processor at a given time. It is related to Windows Explorer. Often,
when people get a message saying that a program is not responding, this fix
seems to help.

RE: detecting formatting in word 2013 especially paragraphs

Control Shift 8 is the show/hide paragraph feature in Word. It has worked in
all word programs since Office 97. I have Office 365/13 now and it still works.

Adrian,

That's odd. I get nothing when I press control-shift-8 either in word
2010 or 2013 except for the announcement of the keys I've pressed.

I just went to the Internet and found a table using the letter t on a
website. I actually went to the table and used control plus shift plus the
right arrow to select the table, and then the down arrow, pressed Control
plus C, opened Excel and pasted it into Excel. The two tables I used worked
well but the tables contained text. I have not tried one with numbers. My
table said table with 3 row and 11 columns. I actually went to
http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_table.asp to find a table.

Hi!

Is there some keystroke to select an entire table (or just a row or column
of it) on a webpage, and then be able to paste it into Excel maintaining
such table's row and column structure? For example, when navigating a
webpage, we hear "Table with X columns and Y rows." I wish I could copy that
table and then paste it into Excel retaining the column and row structure.
Being able to do this with a particular row or column would be fantastic!

thanks,

Richard

When I sign in and the steps state to click settings, don't remember off hand

I click that, I tab over to general, it expands, then I see the light version

This is driving me bonkers lol. No check boxes, or nothing of the sort.

Hi, Tom. In case the Safely Remove Hardware option doesn't show up in your
System Tray, Here's how to get the Safely Remove Hardware back into your System
Tray. As someone else said, this is only good for hard drives, not flash
drives.

If you want to remove a flash drive, find the appropriate drive letter within
Computer, press Applications Key, and Up or Down Arrow to Eject Drive, and
press Enter.

To always show all icons in the system tray

1. Open the Start menu with the Windows key

2. Press escape followed by Alt Enter.

3. Tab to the Notification / Customize button and press Enter.

4. Check the checkbox for always turn on all icons and press Enter.

5. Tab to Okay and press Enter.

 Hello, everyone.

I am sure this may seem pretty elementary to some, but I actually have
gotten varying opinions on the need to use the safely remove hardware
option for USB devices such as USB thumb drives, and USB external hard
 drives.

 So, I have two questions:

 1. Is it still necessary to invoke the safely remove hardware
 option
when using any of these USB devices? I have heard that in later
operating systems like Windows 7, this is not as necessary as it used to be.

 And

 2. How does one easily get to the safely remove hardware option,
 if
it would be a good idea for me to use it?

I am using Windows 7 and Jaws 16 here.

 Thank you!

I took scripting at St. Petersburg at Freedom-Scientific. Now, this was ten

Ted,

You're thinking of insert-F2. I had to go through a similar process in my mind
when I read Barbara's post. She's correct.

Perhaps our confusion comes from the two related commands: insert-F2 gets you
into all the JAWS managers, while insert-6 specifically brings up the settings

RE: Retriving Authorization code

2015-05-15 Thread Mcginnis, Barbara via Jfw
I just checked, the JAWS authorization key number is not displayed. There is
the serial number and then there is a locking code, which is the code you are
given once you enter the authorization number as you install JAWS.

You can retrieve the Authorization code, if you go through the authorization
process. That is, if you have already authorized JAWS. Normally, the code
will display. If it were me, I would copy and paste it from there, and save it
somewhere.

Barbara,

I think Mike is correct. It will not be in the JAWS/Help/About dialog, which is
what I think you're describing. It will be in the dialog during the
authorization process. You can start this from JAWS/Help/Update Authorization
and moving through a couple dialogs.

Kevin,

Yes, this would be the view and you could change it by going to the view tab.
In Word 2013, and I think 2010 as well, alt+W will get you to the view tab.
Then use your tab key to move through the possible views. Whichever view you
are defaulting to will be checked.

I hope this helps.

Subject: RE: Shortcuts for track changes in Word

 Hello Paul:
I don't know that my solution has semantic significance, but here is
 what I did.
I assigned the Next and Previous commands to the quick access
toolbar. That way, when I want to go forward I use Alt plus 4, and if
I want to go backwards, I use Alt plus 3. That way, I move by
revision. It is at least fast.
I thought you said you were in Word 2010. When I checked the key
sequence, I found that Alt followed by r and then f moves back a
change and Alt followed by r and then h moves forward to the next
change. (I had to check since I assigned these keys so long ago that
I forgot them.) Actually, that key sequence does not has semantic
significance at first blush, but r does relate to revisions,
though it actually stands for review in the Microsoft world, and f
is to the left (going backwards on a line) and h is to the right
(going forward on a line. So, it isn't impossible to remember.
To assign a key sequence to the quick access toolbar, just hit alt and
then r. Be sure to hit tab next. Then, hit right arrow until you
come to the end of the comment section. The track change sequence of
ribbon commands should come next. Then use the tab key (otherwise,
you will skip over some of the commands). You will come to a series
 of 4 ribbon commands.
The first is previous revision, then comes accept and move to next.
Then follows reject and move on. Finally you come simply to next
 revision.
Once you have landed on the option you want, JAWS should announce the
key sequence to get there faster. Confirm that the key sequences I
 gave you (above) are correct.
Again, once there, hit the applications key and choose to put the
command you want on the quick access toolbar. You should do previous
first. That should assign it a lower numbered hotkey (like my Alt
plus 3 for previous). Then assign your next revision key to the quick
access toolbar (or QAT). That should give you a higher number, e.g.,
Alt plus 4. Of course, your numbers will depend upon what you already
have on the QAT. Out of the box, Word has some utterly worthless
commands (commands where other shortcut keys are faster). Get rid of
those, and put useful ones on the QAT.
Of course, Alt plus r and then f and Alt plus r and then h isn't
really all that bad. The only unfortunate thing is that f gets
associated in my mind with forward, when it is really backward.
As for comments, the same principles apply. JAWS, however, in my
experience, does a lousy job with comments. Once inside them, it is
nearly impossible to get out and not land somewhere entirely
 unexpected.
Using the Windows plus semicolon is about as good as any. Find the
comment you want that way and then tab to OK. Press ENTER and you'll
be in the document (right in front of the comment. If, in your
verbosity menu, you have turned on the reading of comments, as your
cursor passes over the comment, you will hear it.
If you ever get inside a comment and want to get out, may God have
mercy on you. The only way I've found to get out of a comment halfway
gracefully is to make sure you are in draft before you start the
adventure. If you are in Print, you may have to close down Word to
 get out.
If you are in Draft, escape will get you out, but you may be thrown
to the top of the document.
Also, you know JAWSKEY plus z allows you to use navigation keys.
In a small document, those work OK. In a big document, not so much.
Hope this helps. As I mentioned in a recent post DO NOT depend on
JAWS commands to tell you the color of the track changes. JAWS,
especially JAWS 16, is hopelessly unreliable.

Somebody almost got it but not quite.

The most reliable way to restart Jaws is to press Windows+R and then type:
JAWSxx where xx is the version number. If you don't know what version you're
running, start with 16 (the newest) and count down until you get Jaws instead
of a ding when you press Enter. I just tested this and it does work.

Somebody suggested JFWxx but that won't work. Only JAWSxx does.

Hello list,

So I would like to send an email to multiple recipients, but am not having
success with a certain method. I know I can from within a new email message go
to the to button and look up people to add from my address book, but I find
that to be too tedious and time consuming.

I'm trying to add a bunch of people by first pressing the control button and
then going down my address book with the down arrow and pressing the spacebar
on those who I wish to email. I guess it would be the command for selecting
noncontiguous items in a list. Anyway, After I select the people I wish to
email, I press the control+N command but instead of an email message popping up
with the previously selected contact emails in the to field, I get the prompt
to create a new contact.

I've tried different versions of the same. By selecting my contacts then
tabbing around in the ribbons to select the new mail option and so on, but no
dice.

I got this step by step instruction online, but so far, I've had no luck.

Am I somehow missing a step or can someone enlighten me as to how to best do
this? This is not for distribution lists as I would like to email different
groupings of people at different times.

I'm using Outlook 2010 and the latest Jaws 16.

Thank you,.

RE: Windows 8

2015-04-09 Thread Mcginnis, Barbara via Jfw
Copied this from blind training.com.

If you'd rather boot to the Desktop in Windows 8, this is easily accomplished.
Simply follow these steps:

Move focus to the Windows Taskbar with WINDOWS KEY-T
Tap Escape to remove focus from the application buttons
Press ALT-ENTER to open the Taskbar and Navigation Properties dialog
Within the dialog are four property sheets.
Move focus to the Navigation property sheet. Navigate among property sheets
with CTRL-TAB and CTRL-SHIFT-TAB. Since the Navigation property sheet is the
second property sheet, just press CTRL-TAB once.
On this property sheet are a number of checkboxes. Navigate with TAB and
SHIFT-TAB until you locate the checkbox labeled, When I sign in or close all
apps on a screen, go to the Desktop instead of Start.
In Windows, checkboxes are toggled on and off with SPACEBAR. Toggle this
checkbox on.
Activate the OK button to save the changes. In the future, Windows will use the
Desktop as the default display.

Hi folks! I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion for some good JAWS/Windows
8 tutorials. I have a friend who just purchased a new computer with Windows 8.
I would like to help him, but I am not really familiar with the Windows 8
lay-out. I've heard that there may be a way to change how Windows looks,
meaning the programs menu would look the same as it does in Windows 7. Is this
true? I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks very much!

RE: Problems with JAWS 16, Windows 8.1 and MS Office 365

2015-02-11 Thread Mcginnis, Barbara via Jfw
Office 365/office 13 is a different kettle of fish from Office 2010. My
problem was that when I opened a document from a previous version, it came up
with a read only title. Would not let me change anything and JAWS would not
ready the file. I finally changed it in my Word options and now I do not have
the problem. My next problem to solve is to get spell-check to work as it
should. In Office 365, at least my Office 365, the spellcheck opens in a
separate window on the right hand side of the document and F-6 will not take
you over there and JAWS does not want to read it using F-7. I think I have
instructions somewhere to tell me how to use this particular version of spell
check but I want it to work as it used to work. Is that too much to ask of
Microsoft?

 Hello Friends,

I have a new computer (just over a month ago). It's a desk top (Acer

edition installed. I haven't been able to figure out whether is the
operating system, JAWS 16 or Office 365 - or some combination of the
three, that is causing the problems.

Apart from the learning curve associated with Windows 8.1 (Groan!), MS
 Word
2013 often has trouble loading Word documents from previous versions
of Word. Often it takes a long time to load, displaying a message
something like scanning layout, and I can't do anything with the
document until it is finished. I have a Word 2010 document with
several tables on the first page, and it corrupts the document,
spreading the 1st page over more than 2 pages. My wife says that she
can see that it displays the document OK for a couple of seconds, then
changes it to the corrupt layout.

I installed Office 365 on a laptop with Windows 7. It took several hours.
The MS Office group is in the start menu, but none of the programs
will run, giving the message that it has stopped working. The details say
 appcrash.

If anyone can help with suggestions, or point me to some help, I'd be
very grateful. I am planning on having a chat with the vendor.

 All the best,

Just checked out the answer from Soronel. Say all starts at the beginning of
the line on which the cursor is located. If you are on the last line it will
only read the last line. If you want to start reading at the beginning of the
document, press Control plus home and it will take you to the top of the
document.

Say all normally starts from the current cursor position, possibly the
beginning of the current line instead of the current position proper, but it
does not start from the beginning of the document as a general matter.

On 2/4/15, Paul Lynch via Jfw jfw@lists.the-jdh.com wrote:
I was testing out the say all command, and I am confused by the
behavior. Sometimes say all only seems to say the current line or
section, when I would expect it to always start from the top of the page.

 Test case:

 1) start JAWS
 2) Start IE 11, and go to
 http://www.freedomscientific.com/Training/Surfs-Up/Table_Reading_Comma
 nds.htm
 3) Let JAWS read a little bit, and then hit Esc.
 4) Hit insert + down arrow (say all). JAWS starts reading from the
 first paragraph, skipping the heading.
 5) Hold down right arrow long enough to fast forward to the end of the
 page.
 6) Hit insert + down arrow (say all) again. JAWS only reads the last
 line of the page.

What does say all mean if it all doesn't mean the whole page?

 Thanks,

Here is what I would do:

Press Control plus D for the font dialog box.
Press Alt l for the double strike feature. If is checked, uncheck it with the
spacebar.
Press Tab to set as default
If it is for this document only, press Enter
If you want to set it for all documents, press Alt A. You should hear a
message to the effect that this for all documents based on a normal.dotm or dot

Press Enter here and your double strike disappears.

I have Office 2010 and 2013 and it works the same way in both.

RE: reporting problems to FS

2014-12-18 Thread Mcginnis, Barbara via Jfw
I always call them. Usually I use my cell phone. Their number is
727-803-8600, option 2.

Subject: reporting problems to FS

What’s the best way to report Jaws problems to FS? Under the Contact link, I
found the following:

Quality Department
Freedom Scientific welcomes any suggestions you have that will help improve our
products and provide better service. Please note, however, that we are not able
to respond if you do not provide a valid email address.

Once you submit this form, your request will be reviewed by the responsible
parties. Please be sure to include as much information as possible.

When I follow that link, there is a general web form with a few combo boxes and
an edit field for detail. Is that the most appropriate method for reporting
problems?

I admit I haven’t spent much time exploring their new website.

Jean

Internet Explorer 11, JAWS 15 and You Tube

2014-12-17 Thread Mcginnis, Barbara via Jfw
When I use IE 11, JAWS 15, and You Tube, I cannot make the video pause. If I
am using IE 10, and JAWS 15, you tube pause button works. I called FS and they
tried to use IE 11 and JAWS 16 to pause the video and it did not work with 16.
Any suggestions as to what I can do to make it work? Press B for button does
not work. JAWS may say Pause button but when you press the spacebar, the video
does not stop.
