[josm-dev] How do I edit big relations and detailed contours now that XML style is removed?

2016-03-28 Thread Ilya Zverev
Hi,

Two weeks ago XML style and the corresponding infrastructure were removed from
JOSM (see https://josm.openstreetmap.de/ticket/12282). I was a frequent user of
that style, because it is much faster than the MapCSS one. Especially when
there are hundreds thousands of nodes in a view.

Today I've tried to fix the multipolygon relation of lake Ladoga:
https://josm.openstreetmap.de/ticket/12282 (2k members), and when zoomed out,
JOSM works with 1 frame per 5 seconds, even for button presses. A month ago I
would just enable the XML style and proceed to fix the relation. Now the only
options seems to be enabling the wireframe mode. But it is too bare for any
serious work.

So, is there a way to have a custom build with XML styles or to enable these
the hard way?
Did removing XML styles make anything better in JOSM?

[josm-dev] IDE files in plugins svn

2015-03-15 Thread Ilya Zverev

Hi,

Why do some people keep adding NetBeans' nbproject and/or Eclipse's
.settings+.classpath+.project to most plugins? I've always considered
it a bad behaviour and added these to svn ignore list. Now for some of
my plugins I get tree conflicts, because while I didn't check in my
nbproject, someone uploaded their own.

Maybe we should remove these files from all the plugin sources?

Re: [josm-dev] JOSM graphics contest

2014-11-26 Thread Ilya Zverev
Well, yes, I very much like Felis' logo, which Diamond's design misses
(btw, Felis is Alexander, and Diamond is Ilya). But Diamond's image
looks warmer and more... human, though not as specific as Felis's. And
not as modern as his animated banner.

Also I don't like capitalization in Felis' work: it should be Java
OpenStreetMap Editor.

I'd choose logo and gray vertical banner from Felis, and probably
Clear variant of Diamond's. Then I'd substitute gray background of the
vertical banner with a deep blue paper background from Diamond's banner,
skipping the map, and altering logo colors appropriately.

the dark version has less saturation in the colors.

I actually really like the design idea by Felis Pimeja to make a pencil
out of the J, while Diamond00744 had this compelling idea of leaving
traces of the (java) coffee cup (on the banners). That'll be a hard
decision...

Re: [josm-dev] josm/jmapviewer / tilecache / single directory

2013-04-04 Thread Ilya Zverev
Hi! I'd like to point out that akks is currently working on a plugin to
store tile cache in a database file:
https://trac.openstreetmap.org/browser/subversion/applications/editors/josm/plugins/imagerycache

He'd be glad to receive bug reports and general testing results. Post
them in this Russian forum thread:

[josm-dev] JOSM Plugin no_more_mapping

2012-10-20 Thread Ilya Zverev
Hi. Paul got it right, I've made this plugin just because there has to
be an option. It even counted days without mapping. My record is a week.

As for installing without reading, I've made all the precautions
possible. There was a big warning in plugin list, standing-out red icon
and extensive instructions on how to disable it after it's been
installed. I'd put more warnings if there was a way.

I guess the user that was offended didn't even try to install it. And
based on his words it got removed along with the source code. Oh well.
Have fun knowing that any of your plugins could be deleted because
someone didn't like the description.

[josm-dev] Hi to all plugin maintainers!

2012-03-03 Thread Ilya Zverev
Not a day without surprise: one of josm-tested users has been greeted
with the following message: CommandLine plugin needs JOSM version 4980,
and you have 4878. It turns out, most plugins in osm svn had their
minimal versions updated to 4980, which is greater that josm-tested
version. Obviously, it was because a lot of shortcut code was
deprecated, and someone decided that deprecation should immediately be
followed by removal. Consequently, if someone wants to have the latest
version of a specific plugin, he also has to upgrade to the latest,
unstable version of JOSM. And I don't know what those who download
josm-tested for the first time should do.

Is josm-tested officially unsupported now? Or is there a separate
repository for plugins compatible with it?

Re: [josm-dev] Shortcuts

2012-02-17 Thread Ilya Zverev
For example, most drawing shortcuts - A, S, Q, X and W until
recently - are
situated in the left part of the keyboard. So mapping is one hand on
those
keys, and right hand on a mouse. Now those shortcuts have started to
spread
to all of the keyboard, dramatically increasing mileage of finger
movements.
So, even if you don't like moving building_tools back to W, please
consider
using D for it: delete action so close to S key has been the reason
for many

swear words and Ctrl+Z (another left-hand shortcut!) presses.

B is as well reachable by left hand as D. We wont change that again
only
why some people feel that 3 cm are too much. Sorry, but this is
nonsense.
We have more that 250 shortcuts to worry about, we wont discuss about
some

centimeters here!

If you are deciding what's right and what's not for building_tools
plugin,

not leaving it for the community, isn't it time to fix
http://josm.openstreetmap.de/ticket/7328 ?

Re: [josm-dev] Shortcuts

2012-02-16 Thread Ilya Zverev

Saying at any time in the future, the josm core can take over
existing plugins shortcuts because we find it so cute and plugins
will

have to accept it (1) is another one. This is a kind of arrongance
and disrespect of JOSM plugins users and devs.

We did setup a shortcut collection page including core and plugin
shortcuts and we will choose proper shortcuts in future (which will
not

be easy, as most keys already have all 8 possibilities used) avoiding
rearrangments when possible.

But the core is more important. So when we need a specific key in
future,

the plugins need to step back.

Plugins have a lower usage count than core and thus it is logically
they
can't be considered equal. Beside the two windows auto-installed
plugins

only 3 others reach more than 20% installations (of all installations
which have at least 1 plugin installed, others aren't counted):

*22.4% utilsplugin2
*24.2% PicLayer
*33.2% buildings_tools

So, by changing the only shortcut used in building_tools plugin, you've
inconvienced only 33% of your users? Way to go! Good thing not all of
them know about trac and this mailing list. And I see that other two
plugins mentioned have to change their shortcuts regularly as well.

[josm-dev] Shortcuts

2012-02-16 Thread Ilya Zverev
Hi. The problem with shortcuts is that they all are in unordered mess.
And the only way to fix that is to establish a policy on shortcuts. And
not we take whichever we like policy. It's more like doing a proper
user experience testing.

For example, most drawing shortcuts - A, S, Q, X and W until recently -
are situated in the left part of the keyboard. So mapping is one hand on
those keys, and right hand on a mouse. Now those shortcuts have started
to spread to all of the keyboard, dramatically increasing mileage of

[josm-dev] Dynamic buttons in side menus

2011-10-15 Thread Ilya Zverev
Hi! I've read http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Pieren/diary/15098 and
it seems that many people share an opinion that dynamic buttons are
better turned off. After I installed @4512, I was rather stunned: what?
where? It is hard to plan mouse movements when there is no destination
visible. And really, does hiding action buttons really help? Properties
panel is there not to check tags, but to edit them. Layers panel — to
change layers. Why display extra lines, if you still need to scroll to
do something with them?

So, could we please have dynamic buttons turned off by default?
