They told us to do that because they were having some problem with keeping
passwords synchronized between different mail servers in their pool. Or
something like that.

That was shortly after the Charter-TimeWarner merge. It seemed like they were
having a lot of technical problems and their support people were a bit confused
between the disparate systems.

I just changed it to use SSL and it's working. So the no security bit can be
ignored.

When using 1and1 or O2 as email provider I always had a full inbox because
the thunderbird had deleted or move all mails I instructed it to delete or
move. But I used Geary as 2nd mail program and my mails stayed accessible
until Geary way informed Thet they were no more there. Which was bad since
one day I deleted my Geary installation.

Perhaps a similar thing happens with k9, depending on the settings -
without it being k9's fault.

Hmm. Using K-9 with Spectrum over IMAP, when I long press on my Spectrum

2019-02-23 Thread Larry L
Still seems to be little flaky the whole Delete Logic not much
documentation around the logic around those 4 items

So I have two Android devices and both are set the same way talking to my
own IMAP email server/account/provider, not GMAIL.

So here is what I did that seems to work majority of the time
1) Under *Settings\Folder Settings* - I set all folders the same on all my
devices. Set to same IMAP Trash folder and the others appropriately.
>From what I understand is if that Trash folder is set then when you delete
a messages in your INBOX or any other folder the message will be moved to
TRASH folder. Similar to what happens if use outlook.
2) Under *Settings\Account Settings\Fetch* mail I have the following set.
a) *Sync Server Deletions: Checked* From what I understand this
will keep the "TRASH" Folder in sync between all devices.
b) *When I delete a Message: Delete from Server* From what it
appears to me all this does is place the messages you jsut deleted into the
TRASH folder you listed in Step 1 above. Then since in 2a it makes sure the
TRASH folder is in sync between all devices using that IMAP.
c) *Erase deleted messages on server: Manually*From what I
understand this will leave messages into your trash folder until you
EXPUNGE the folders. I wish they would rename Erase to EXPUNGE. So if you
set to Immediately or poll the messages would then also be expunged from
the TRASH folder. Otherwise set to manual, you will have to run the
EXPUNGE when ever you want to purge the emails from TRASH which should then
clear messages from servers and all the other devices syncing with IMAP.

The same problem here.

I set "delete messages on server" in K-9.

But even when I delete the whole folder "trash" all messages are still on the
server while they are gone in K-9.

This leads to server storage warnings time after time.

Then I have to login via a web interface and manually delete all those messages
again.

Why doesn't K-9 really delete those messages on the server as I told it to do?

Okay, I skimmed over it, and in fact K-9 performs deleting on pressing
‘Delete’, only when you did not specify a trash folder where messages should be
moved instead. So, addressing your specific issue, first check also the
current settings under ‘Account settings’ / ‘Folders’ / ‘Trash folder’.

So to clarify this setting

*Erase Deleted messages on Server: Immediately.*

Is this the same and saying *Expunge Messgages messages on Server:
Immediatley* after marking as deleted?

I think what is throwing me off is what is meant my Erase in that setting.
I assume means to expunge.

I am not aware about how K-9 is implemented (and even less aware about
Outlook™, of course), but generally deleting and expunging messages over IMAP
have nothing to do with folders with any magic names like ‘TRASH’. ‘Deleted’
mail is simply flagged as ‘\Deleted’, but is still there (in the current
folder) and could be undeleted, while ‘expunged’ means really removed (again,
from the current folder). (‘Really removed’ not in a paranoid sense of the
word, of course, just that space it occupied may be reused.)

This is usual behaviour, but nothing prevents the IMAP server you use to
execute your commands in another way. Moreover, it may be configurable on
server side. And, as far as remember, Google Mail (about which, I presume, you
are talking) _do_ have such settings. They are also well known for breaking
old behaviour. So maybe what you described was due to some changes on the
server rather than in user-agent?

[k-9-mail] Deletion Settings - Expunge

2019-02-19 Thread Larry L
I am trying to figure out what the 3 settings for deletion mean. And if I
am setting it up incorectly or something changed.

I have 2 phones running K9 and Outlook 2016 running on PC all setup to use
IMAP

For the past 3+ years I have been running my 2 phone devices with these
settings with no issues.

*Sync Server Deletion: Checked*
*When I delete a Messages: Delete from Server*
*Erase Deleted messages on Server: Immediately.*

No matter what device I would delete a message from any folder it would go
to the TRASH folder. And it would be reflected on all 3 devices in the
TRASH folder. When I would delete items from TRASH folder it would reflect
on all 3 devices as no longer in TRASH.

As I mentioned all was working that way for a long time, however seems
starting with the latest K9 release the funtion has changed. Now when I
delete a messages with the same settings above the messages no longer goes
to the TRASH folder but now seem to be expunged right away and no longer is
on the server or shows on any other devivce.

I know I should not use TRASH folder as a storage area but has now cleared
all my trash messages.

So to get back to that functionality for deleting a message and showing up
in te TRASH folder on all devices till I delete from TRASH folder or run
Expunge. What settings should I be using? I can't seem to find the
correct combination.

I assume the *Erase Deleted messages on Server: Immediately* means to
expunge Immedially but was not working that way for years and does that
mean I should now change that to Manual.

Any suggestions would be great.
