[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1774150] Re: 3.13.0-149-generic: suspend/resume issue on 14.04

2018-11-03 Thread Matheus S. Fontana
I had to use kernel 3.13.0-157 to have suspend + newest microcode
working together without problems. Newer kernel versions would freeze
after suspend.

I downgraded microcode to 2.20140122.1 and then I could use the newest
kernel version to this date (3.13.0-162) without problems after suspend.

Title:
  3.13.0-149-generic: suspend/resume issue on 14.04

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS, the most recent kernel update to
3.13.0-149-generic means that my laptop (Acer Aspire V5) does not
resume once suspended - all I get is a blank screen, unresponsive to
keypresses, and I need to reboot.

The 144 kernel is OK, and this question:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1040169/experiencing-suspend-resume-problem-after-latest-kernel-update-ubuntu-14-04
suggests that 147 is OK too.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1795292] Re: ELAN469D touch pad not working

2018-11-03 Thread FF8Jake
Hello,

Tried this kernel but saw no change in behavior.

Earlier, someone posted this:

dmesg | grep i2c
[ 1.015986] i2c /dev entries driver
[ 1.662298] i2c_hid i2c-ELAN469D:00: i2c-ELAN469D:00 supply vdd not found,
using dummy regulator
[ 2.684046] i2c_designware AMDI0010:01: controller timed out

Mine is showing the same now, but for i2c-SYNA3255. My acpidump clearly
showed elan469d though.

Thanks!

  SRU request:

  [Impact]

   * As a result of this bug, bcmwl-kernel-source will fail to build the
module against linux-generic-lts-utopic in Ubuntu 14.04.2.

  [Test Case]

   * Enable the trusty-proposed repository and install bcmwl-kernel-
  source (6.30.223.248+bdcom-0ubuntu0.1).

   * Install linux-generic-lts-utopic

   * If the package installs without errors from DKMS with both the
linux-generic and linux-generic-lts-utopic kernels, then the patches
  work correctly.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The patches that I backported from 15.04 will preserve the current
  driver behaviour on linux-generic (3.13) and linux-generic-lts-utopic
(3.16), thanks to the use of specific macros in the code which check
the kernel version. As a result, no regressions of any kind can be
expected on these kernels. As a plus, support for kernels up to 3.18
  is also included.

  [Other Info]

  Original bug description:

The bcmwl package as of now misses one patch for a bug that occurs
with BCM43142 and possibly other broadcom chipsets that will look like
random disconnects, poor wifi signal and kernel warnings, See also
  #1379524.

Adding the patch is a fairly simple process:

  * put the patch file in /usr/src/bcmwl-6.30.223.248+bdcom/patches
  * add the following line to /usr/src/bcmwl-6.30.223.248+bdcom/dkms.conf
  PATCH[7]="0014-null-pointer-crash.patch"
  * run: /usr/lib/dkms/common.postinst bcmwl 6.30.223.248+bdcom
/usr/share/bcmwl x86_64 $(uname -r)

This has fixed the issue for me. Edit: I just wanted to add that I did
not write the patch; I merely downloaded it from a paste that was
linked from the respective AUR package.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1776563] Re: Acer Aspire A315 IOAPIC failure on Ubuntu 18.04, kernel hangs, can't load, kernel freeze (AMD Ryzen 5/Radeon/Raven) / AMDGPU Hybrid crash

2018-11-03 Thread you
My mistake. I've move back to 4.19 and CPU is at 75° minimum on idle... But my
mistake is when I'm on 4.15, CPU temp is not showing at all So the temp is
maybe high even on 4.15.
So I'll stay on 4.19. 1h30 battery life from 100% to 10% only by using chromium
and the terminal mostly... still bad when I reach 3h on windows.. and this
laptop is supposed to have a 6 hours battery life.

The same thing happens on mainline 4.17,4.18rc1-2.
BIOS upgrade to the latest version: 1.08 hasn't helped

This problem has been reported upstream:

Bug description:
  ===SRU Justification===
  [Impact]
Systems with acpi-lpss can't do S3/S4 on Bionic.

  [Test]
Users confirmed these patches work for them.

  [Fix]
Commit a192aa923b66a (ACPI / LPSS: Consolidate runtime PM and system
sleep handling) applies quirks for both runtime and system suspend.
This causes problems for some systems, so avoid using quirks on S3 and
  S4.

  [Regression Potential]
Low. These patches are in upstream stable, and it brings back driver's
  old behavior.

  ===Original Bug Report===
I have installed Kubuntu 18.04 on 3 different machines (my friend's and my
own) with no suspend problems but my HP Pavilion 11 x360 does not suspend.

It suspends fine with Ubuntu 17.10, Kubuntu 17.10, Devuan Jesse,
Devuan ASCII and Windows 10 but fails with Ubuntu 18.04 and Kubuntu
  18.04.

I have also tried suspend using a live USB of 18.04 on this machine
and it fails in the same way, so does not appear to be caused by any
additional programs that I had installed.

By installing an older kernel (4.14) on Kubuntu 18.04 the suspend
  function works as expected.

Running Kubuntu 18.04 with kernels 4.15, 4.16, 4.17 results in the
suspend failure that freezes the machine and requires a hard reset.

  Correct behaviour is -

Screen goes blank, fan goes off, power LED flashes to show machine is
in suspend. Pressing power button triggers 'resume' function.

  What happens -

Screen goes blank, fan stays on, power LED stays on. Machine stays in
this state and does not respond to any keyboard interaction, mouse
  movement or power button presses.

Ctrl + Alt + f1 (or f2, f3, f4 etc) does not get any response.

The only way to use the machine is to shut down by holding down the
  power button.

Checking the logs suggests that the machine believes it is in suspend
mode sleep [deep] when it isn't.

Having to hard reset to get any response means that the kernel logs
say no more than sleep [deep]

pm-suspend also results in the same problems with kernels 4.15 and
4.16, but works fine with 4.14.

It is curious that a machine that suspends fine on an earlier 4.14
kernel no longer works with 4.15 and above, whilst 3 other machines
(including one with pretty similar hardware) do not exhibit this
  problem.

There are only a handful of questions about it on the forums but at
least 3 other people have the same problem:

  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1029405/ubuntu-18-04-crashes-on-
  resuming-from-suspend

  https://askubuntu.com/questions/1041369/after-upgrading-
  from-17-10-ubuntu-18-04-wont-sleep-suspend

I am attempting to round up anyone else with the same issue and point
  them to this bug report.

My laptop is HP Pavilion x360 11-n013na
  Matalaks is Acer Aspire ES1-511
  collisionTwo has XPS 9560

  4.16.0-041600-lowlatency, 4.18.0-041800-lowlatency,
4.19.0-041900-lowlatency. This suggests the issue is specific to the

two after startup. Despite this graphics performance seems unaffected
and the CPU usage isn't abnormal. Both my mouse and audio device are USB
devices, and the dmesg log shows problems with the irq I think is
associated with the USB controller.

This issue does not exist in any mainline kernel I've tried -
4.16.0-041600-lowlatency, 4.18.0-041800-lowlatency,
4.19.0-041900-lowlatency. This suggests the issue is specific to the
Ubuntu kernel.

I've tried booting with the 'irqpoll' option but this didn't make any
difference.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1757218] Re: QCA9377 isn't being recognized sometimes

2018-11-03 Thread Leonardo Müller
I shutdown and turned on the computer using this kernel four times and
in none the problem happened. With the default Bionic kernel the failure
on boot would have happened twice.

Title:
  QCA9377 isn't being recognized sometimes

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Sometimes, the Wireless Network Card QCA9377 is not recognized on
boot. This caused, on prior versions, a kernel panic at boot. With
Bionic, the system boots but is unable to use wireless network. On
  dmesg there are messages like:

  [2.680590] usb 1-7: new full-speed USB device number 7 using xhci_hcd
  [2.808640] usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -71

  [4.948591] usb 1-7: new full-speed USB device number 10 using xhci_hcd
[4.949109] usb 1-7: Device not responding to setup address.
[5.156893] usb 1-7: Device not responding to setup address.
[5.364589] usb 1-7: device not accepting address 10, error -71
[5.364655] usb usb1-port7: unable to enumerate USB device

And lspci and lsusb don't show the wireless network card. The
alternative is to turn the system off. Reboot don't work and reboot to
Windows 10 also don't. The system must be powered off to restore
functionality. Then, on the next boot, it works properly.

However, after the system is turned off, it may cause the issue again.
This is not 100% consistent, but mostly it cycles between powering off
and powering on the notebook as:

  Work -> Don't work -> Work -> Don't work

On Windows 10 this doesn't happen but when happens on Ubuntu, it's
possible to reboot and see the status on Windows 10 too: on Device
Manager it's shown a unidentified USB device at 1-7. Sometimes, on
Windows 10's Network Devices it's shown, instead of the QCA9377, from
four to six different devices with generic names and Bluetooth and/or
  Wireless don't work.

When turning Ubuntu off, there are messages that appears a few
instants before the system is turned off:

  Mar 18 18:27:26 usuario-Lenovo-ideapad-310-14ISK kernel: [14146.403388]

wlp2s0: failed to remove key (0, xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx) from hardware (-110)

Generally, only the second message appears (but both are recorded on
kern.log). The MAC adress is the one from the router, not from the
  wireless card.

Re: [Kernel-packages] [Bug 1801232] Re: Ubuntu MATE crashes when too many external USB drives are mounted.

2018-11-03 Thread Robert Pearson
Dear Joseph,
Unfortunately I am a Linux newbie. This means that I do not even know what
you mean by "upstream kernel". I do know that when I tried Ubuntu MATE
18.10 that after three days of error messaged I went back to 18.04. I am
still trying to recover data from the initial 18.04 total meltdown (I was
not even able to boot). After installing different versions of Ubuntu three
times in one week, I am leery of trying some method I do not know to try an
"upstream kernel".

I only send in the bug reports to help the developers fix their bugs - as
opposed to John Dominique Wernier's technique of not including the bugs in
first place.

I do know that Ubuntu MATE Artful Ardvark and Bionic Beaver both had this
problem. Maybe its like the Unix limitation of only allowing 125 file
handles or yacc only allowing 425 productions - the program limiting the
size of a resource because he does not keep up with the size of modern
computers. (i.e. Word6 limited to files smaller than 50MB in machines with
1GB RAM.)

I also know that 18.04 is extremely sluggish with a 6TB external drive
mounted (fortunately I did not buy the 8TB drive).

If there is something I can try without having to completely re-install my
OS and all applications, please let me know. I want to help.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1801526] Re: Ubuntu internal error when copying 3TB of data

2018-11-03 Thread Cristian Aravena Romero
It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

After 3 days, very little had (only 2.3GB) had been copied.

Then I got a Ubuntu internal error window. I checked the "bemember

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1801526] Re: Ubuntu internal error when copying 3TB of data

2018-11-03 Thread Cristian Aravena Romero
Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.19 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Bug description:
When starting Xubuntu 18.04.1 LTS on a laptop HP 1S-af023ng with
kernel 4.15.0-32.35 amd64, wifi via rtl8723be works OK.

  Using actual 4.15.0-33.36 amd64 instead, rtl8723be doesn't find any
wifi networks and thus there is no connection. Changing the antenna
  setup in /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be_options.conf doesn't help either;
as a workaround an external wifi device (Gigaset USB Adapter 108)
  works.

The expectation is that wifi through rtl8723be will still work under
4.15.0-33.36 as it did previously.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1770845] Re: Make vfio-pci built-in or xhci_hcd optional

2018-11-03 Thread Nazar Mokrynskyi
So according to Arch Wiki
(https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PCI_passthrough_via_OVMF#Isolating_the_GPU):
> Starting with Linux 4.18.16, vfio-pci is compiled-in as opposed to being a
> module

Does this mean the same will happen in Ubuntu's kernel?

Bug description:
  Because of
  nazar-pc@nazar-pc ~> cat '/boot/config-4.15.0-21-generic' | grep
CONFIG_USB_XHCI_HCD
  CONFIG_USB_XHCI_HCD=y

  Following doesn't work:
  nazar-pc@nazar-pc ~> cat /etc/modprobe.d/gpu-passthrough.conf
  options vfio-pci ids=10de:1b06,10de:10ef,1b21:2142
  softdep nouveau pre: vfio-pci
  softdep xhci_hcd pre: vfio-pci

GPU is fine (first 2 IDs), but USB controller is always occupied by
  xhci_hcd and I can't change that while xhci_hcd is built-in.

I'd like you to resolve this issue by either embedding vfio-pci module
too (prefered solution) or making xhci_hcd optional.

There are some discussions withot clean solution online like this:

Bug description:
Trying to use the impress remote
  (https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Impress_Remote) over bluetooth
with libreoffice over ubuntu bionic fails.

The handset errors out that it cannot connect with Libreoffice on the
computer even if the bluetooth adapter on the handset and on the
  computer are correctly paired.

This does not seem to be an issue in the Libreoffice or in the impress
  remote code:

  - I have tested also past LibO versions
  - The Impress remote codebase has not changed recently

This used to work on the same hardware (headset and laptop) with
  ubuntu 16.04.

Hence the issue seems to be in a regression in the ubuntu bluetooth
  stack.

  To replicate:

  1) Install Libreoffice on Ubuntu bionic (either from the ubuntu repo
or with the deb packages from the document fundation)

  2) Assure that your computer has bluetooth

  3) Install impress remote on an android handset (either from the play
  store of via fdroid)

  4) Assure that "remote control" is enabled in impress
  Tools>Options>Impress>General

  5) Pair the bluetooth adapters in the laptop and in the computer

  6) Open a presentation on the laptop

  7) Open the remote on the handset, got to the bluetooth pane see the
  computer there, touch it

  8) See the impress remote erroring out

Most likely you will also get a bluetooth error on dmesg

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1581088] Re: Middle mouse (wheel-click) button stopped working after upgrade to 16.04

2018-11-03 Thread Jeroen
In Kubuntu 18.04 the middle mouse button of my Logitech M310 didn't work
anymore.
After I tried the workaround as described in #91 and #95 it started working
again.

Please try if this kernel works. May need to reboot twice because the
fix is in shutdown path.

  [3.044337] usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -71
  [3.280064] usb 1-7: new full-speed USB device number 8 using xhci_hcd
  [3.408245] usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -71
  [3.644244] usb 1-7: device descriptor read/64, error -71
[3.752193] usb usb1-port7: attempt power cycle
  [4.404591] usb 1-7: new full-speed USB device number 9 using xhci_hcd
[4.404904] usb 1-7: Device not responding to setup address.
[4.612478] usb 1-7: Device not responding to setup address.
[4.820588] usb 1-7: device not accepting address 9, error -71

  Work -> Don't work -> Work -> Don't work

  Mar 18 18:27:26 usuario-Lenovo-ideapad-310-14ISK kernel: [14146.403388]
ath10k_pci :02:00.0: failed to install key for vdev 0 peer

wlp2s0: failed to remove key (0, xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx) from hardware (-110)

Generally, only the second message appears (but both are recorded on
kern.log). The MAC adress is the one from the router, not from the
  wireless card.

  Fix Released

Bug description:
  ===SRU Justification===

  ===Original Bug Report===

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1799497] Re: 4.15 kernel hard lockup about once a week

2018-11-03 Thread Luis Rodriguez
Got a hot locked with no zram-config installed.. Same behaviour, no log
information, can't even type in the console, no ssh, no ping. ALso all
the LXD containers don't ping either

Title:
4.15 kernel hard lockup about once a week

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in linux source package in Bionic:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
My main server has been running into hard lockups about once a week
ever since I switched to the 4.15 Ubuntu 18.04 kernel.

When this happens, nothing is printed to the console, it's effectively
stuck showing a login prompt. The system is running with panic=1 on
the cmdline but isn't rebooting so the kernel isn't even processing
  this as a kernel panic.

As this felt like a potential hardware issue, I had my hosting provider give
me a completely different system, different motherboard, different CPU,
different RAM and different storage, I installed that system on 18.04 and moved
my data over, a week later, I hit the issue again.

We've since also had a LXD user reporting similar symptoms here also on
varying hardware:
https://github.com/lxc/lxd/issues/5197

My system doesn't have a lot of memory pressure with about 50% of free memory:

  root@vorash:~# free -m
totalusedfree shared buff/cache
available
  Mem: 31819 17574 402 513 13842
13292
  Swap: 159092687 13222

I will now try to increase console logging as much as possible on the
system in the hopes that next time it hangs we can get a better idea
of what happened but I'm not too hopeful given the complete silence on
  the console when this occurs.

  System is currently on:
Linux vorash 4.15.0-36-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 24 16:19:09 UTC 2018
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

But I've seen this since the GA kernel on 4.15 so it's not a recent
regression.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1799082] Re: Returning from suspend exits x session

2018-11-03 Thread TD
So. I pinned the working kernel version, updated everything, and like a
moron also updated the Nvidia drivers from the graphics-drivers ppa, in
readiness to try the upstream kernel version. Whoops. Now it no longer
logged in at all, freezing in the same place it used to freeze when
sleeping, just after ‘Started Manage, Install and Generate Color
Profiles.’

So I removed the ppa, purged the Nvidia drivers, and then tried to get
nouveau working... and now it all works, on all kernel versions. Which
means trying the upstream version won’t tell us anything. I checked with
lshw -c video and my 3D card is ‘display UNCLAIMED’ which makes sense.

I actually have to use this machine, so I am not going to try anything
else for the rest of the weekend, but I will try and get the NVidia
drivers back to the state they were in initially.

Sorry for being a pain, folks...

2018-11-03 Thread Luya Tshimbalanga
The issue affects all distributions running on HP touchscreen laptop
powered with AMD processors. The culprit is a misconfiguration of ACPI
table impacting the touchscreen function. Some users attempted to
workaround the problem but needed input from upstream.
