[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1767133] Re: linux-image-4.15.0-20-generic install after upgrade from xenial breaks

2018-04-27 Thread Artem V L
The same issue happens starting with the kernel 4.14.36 (also exists
with the 4.14.37) on Ubuntu 16.04 x64, note that 4.14.35 installed fine.

  [Impact]
Some upgrades from xenial to bionic break.

  [Test Case]
Change sources.list from xenial to bionic, then apt install
linux-image-4.15.0-20-generic.

  [Regression Potential]
The kernel may be uninstallable if there is no linux-base with the
appropriate version in the archive.

When installing the linux-image-4.15.0-20-generic kernel from bionic
on xenial breaks because of the unversioned Depends on linux-base.

  /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-4.15.0-20-generic.postinst: 50:
/var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-image-4.15.0-20-generic.postinst:

subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 127
  Errors were encountered while processing:
   linux-image-4.15.0-20-generic
  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

If the trigger is called, when some meta packages are installed, it
won't happen. If all packages are upgraded, it's possible linux-base
is going to be upgraded first, so the problem won't happen either.

So, not all upgrades will be affected.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1741505] Re: Ubuntu Hangs: unable to handle kernel paging request (kernel 4.14.11)

2018-01-06 Thread Artem V L
Hi Joseph, no this issue has not occurred on any other Ubuntu kernels up to
4.14. In particular, 4.13 works fine and is much more stable (does not hangs
and has no issues with the periphery unlike 4.14).
It seems all the required information that could be provided was provided from
my side as the attachment on the initial reporting of this bug.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1666316] Re: Windows become unclickable (transparent for mouse clicks) after resume from sleep

2017-02-20 Thread Artem V L
This bug appeared for months on different (previous) kernels, just I
have reported it for the first time.

** Information type changed from Private Security to Public Security

Title:
Windows become unclickable (transparent for mouse clicks) after resume
  from sleep

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Windows become unclickable (transparent for mouse clicks) after resume from
the sleep mode. Both system and JVM windows can't capture mouse clicks
including clicks on the title bar after resuming from the sleep mode. Unity
panel works fine, new applications can be started and they do not have this
issue, i.e. new windows are fully functional.
This bug appears seldom and is hardly reproducible (like #1651520).

This bug is a minor security vulnerability because clicking on the
foreground non-clickable window, a user performs actual click on the
background window (or desktop shortcuts) and anything can be
initiated/started that the user has right, but was not intended to do.

  Notes:
  This bug might relate to
  #1651520 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1651520)
except in 4.4.0-62, except 1) the windows' content now is not damaged and
visually indistinguishable from the fully functional windows and 2) windows in
#1651520 had destroyed content, but were clickable.
Neither this bug nor #1651520 appear in the 4.9.3 kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1651520] Re: Scrambled UI: Text in the Unity windows disappears/mixed after the resume from the screen idle state

2017-01-16 Thread Artem V L
This issue has only a minor appearance (not affects the OS usability so
much) on the latest kernel (4.9.3-040903): the windows redrawing is
dirty, but the UI is functional. See
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=192671.

Title:
Scrambled UI: Text in the Unity windows disappears/mixed after the
resume from the screen idle state

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
What happens in Ubuntu 16.04 is that in Unity the text of windows are
scrambled including terminal, nautilus. Java apps aren't affected
  (browsers and LibreOffice).

This happens typically when resuming from suspend via GUI or closing
and reopening the lid. It happens after ~1 of 20 wakeups. The
probability seems to be higher when there are more opened windows and
external monitor is plugging. In fact, the last 2 issues appeared on
plugging the external monitor after the sleep mode. However the bug
sometimes (about twice during 4 months) reproduced even on pure laptop
without any external devices plugged in.

This bug occurs in linux-image-generic 4.4.0.53. It does not appear
  with linux-image-extra-4.4.0-51-generic 4.4.0-51.72 amd64.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1651520] Re: Scrambled UI: Text in the Unity windows disappears/mixed after the resume from the screen idle state

2017-01-13 Thread Artem V L
Christopher, *-rc versions are the release Candidates, once I installed
it (http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.9-rc5) to check the
same bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1641152)
in November and ended up without WiFi. I can't work on *-rc.

The bug reproduced after the idle state, laptop lid closing or waking up
from the sleeping mode with frequency about once per ~20-30 such
actions. The probability seems to be higher when there are more opened
windows and external monitor is plugging. In fact, the last 2 issues
appeared on plugging the external monitor after the sleep mode. However
the bug sometimes (about twice during 4 months) reproduced even on pure
laptop without any external devices.

I think that you don't have many reports about this bug only because the
reporting should be done manually. Moreover, it's extremely hard for an
ordinary user to perform such reporting when the UI is totally broken
and apport-collect doesn't always success to report even if it was
called (as nico mentioned, and I also had the same issue with the
apport-collect).

---

Info about the kernels:

[a few older kernels (< 4.4.0-50) have the UI scrambling issue]

-4.4.0-51 - OK: UI scrambling has never occurred, but sometimes (when
UI scrambling occurs on another kernels) on this kernel system windows
become non-sensitive to the mouse clicks: shortcuts on the desktop are
clicked behind the foreground window instead of it. This can be fixed by
closing and reopening the window (which does not help on another kernels
with the UI scrambling issue). On this kernel the windows can always be
moved using the title panel (the top bar of the window) even when the
remained part of the [foreground] window is not sensitive (transparent
for the mouse clicks).

-4.4.0-53, 4.4.0-57, 4.4.0-59 - UI scrambling issue

- 4.9.3-040903 - under the evaluation. It survived the stress testing
without any issues: intentional subsequent lid closing, laptop
suspending and external monitor plugging (up to 20 times). Now is under
the "working" testing as my default working kernel.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1651520] Re: Scrambled UI: Text in the Unity windows disappears/mixed after the resume from the screen idle state

2017-01-13 Thread Artem V L
Christopher, I've installed the latest mainline kernel
(4.9.3-040903-generic #201701120631) and performed quick stress testing.
At the moment everything works fine, but as me and nico mentioned, this
bug is not always reproducable even on the kernels where it definitely
exists. I will work on this latest kernel and notify in case of any
related issues.

I can not install another version of Ubuntu on my laptop, because it
would affect my work, but I will install the latest build of the kernel
before the next reboot (which is done approximately once per a month).

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1651520] [NEW] Scrambled UI: Text in the Unity windows disappears/mixed after the resume from the screen idle state

2016-12-20 Thread Artem V L
Public bug reported:

Text in Unity windows becomes a total mess after suspending and waking up
Ubuntu 16.04. Text content in most of system and native windows are scrambled
including terminal, nautilus, native apps EXCEPT Java apps (browsers and Libre
Office work fine).
I had this issue multiple times, but it is not always reproducable.

This bug occurred now in linux-image-generic 4.4.0.53. Earlier it
occurred multiple times on linux-image-extra-4.4.0-47-generic
4.4.0-47.68 amd64 Linux kernel and some earlier versions (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1641152). It did
not appeare on linux-image-extra-4.4.0-51-generic 4.4.0-51.72 amd64 and
now it appeares again (on linux-image-generic 4.4.0.53).

I was not able to report it via the apport-collect. The console window was
totally ureadable, but the recovered output is:
$ apport-collect 1641152
/usr/share/apport/apport-gtk:16: PyGIWarning: Wnck was imported without
specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('Wnck', '3.0') before import
to ensure that the right version gets loaded.

The issue have not been appeared since the middle of Nov. I have no idea
whether it was a kernel-specific issue or Unity-specific one, but it
seems it has been fixed by the updates.

Yes, this issue has started after the update and was not occurred after I
upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04 until some of the latest updates, though it might
be pre-last kernel update.
It seems, this issue occurs since the latest version(s) of the 4.4.0-47 kernel,
definitely in 4.4.0-47.68 and might be in 4.4.0-47.50 but I'm not 100% about
that.

---

I tested with the v4.9-rc5 kernel, but it does not support my WiFi network
card, so the test was very fast (I can't work without WiFi).
The issue has not been reproduced, but it is not always reproducable even on
4.4.0-47.68. So it is not known whether the issue exists in the latest kernel
and that is why I've not assigned any tag (kernel-bug-exists-upstream /
kernel-fixed-upstream).
However, another issues discovered on v4.9-rc5:
1. A laptop does not [always] go to the sleep (susbend) mode on lid closing
when the external monitor is plugged, instead the all desktop windows are
relocated to the external monitor.
2. When the external monitor is plugged off, the windows are NOT relocated to
the laptop display, becoming totally unreachable.

---

Peculiarities about the Scrambled UI issue on 4.4.0-47[.68]: all windows
of native apps are affected, but not the Java windows (Chrome browser
and Libre Office UIs work fine).

By the way, besides the Scrambled UI there are a few more issues in the
4.4.0-47[.68]:

1. WiFi network connectivity disappeared (might be when is not used for
some time), but the icon (near the time on the top right corner of the
destop) shows the connection having fine signal strength. The
connectivity restarts when I click on the currently connected network.

2. Sometimes the connectivity disappears totally and the icon clearly
shows it. Then I have to restart the network manager service.
Particularly this issue seems to be present since I upgraded from 14.04
(since the 4.4.0-43.63 kernel).

3. Often the touchpad stops work at all (for example now) though
"xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is already the newest version (1.8.2-1ubuntu3)".
This issue also exists since I upgraded from 14.04.
The touchpad works fine on v4.9-rc5, though the test was very fast and I'm not
sure that this issue is really fixed.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1641152] Re: Text in the Unity windows disappears/mixed after the resume

2016-11-14 Thread Artem V L
The same issue ocurred, but under another usecase.
This time the laptop was NOT after the sleep state. The issue occurred afer a
few minutes of the idle state so as the display was automatically shut down,
but without the sleep state. Also this time an external monitor has been
pluggen in addition to the laptop display.
I ran "apport-collect 1641152" and also attached one more image.

[Kernel-packages] [Bug 1641152] Re: Text in the Unity windows disappears/mixed after the resume

2016-11-12 Thread Artem V L
I rebooted the laptop at ~2 am of Nov 12, so there is no sence to run
"apport-collect" now. However I collected manually system logs for the
period of time when that issue occurred (~ 15:00 of Nov 11 - 2 am of Nov
12).

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Confirmed
