2009-01-19 Thread AD5VJ Bob
Hello group:

I just downloaded and installed the windows xp version of kicad along with the
3d viewer suggested, and the documentation pdf's (not
sure what they are for yet).

I am impressed with Kicad, thanks are in order for what so far seems to be a
very professional application for sch drawing and CB
manufacturer. I have been looking for an application to refresh myself with CAD.

After looking over many, this one seems to be 'the one' that will allow me to
be familiar with any professional application that may
be presented in the industry while job hunting.

Many years ago, I used CAD in the lab of a very well known Institute. This was
back in the middle to late 80's, so it has been a
while and many things are still familiar, yet many things have changed in the
world of CAD all together for electronics design.

I will be playing with it to become familiar as I begin my voyage with you all
discovering its uses and nuances as we proceed.

Thank you for having me as a member of the group.

Is there a link we have for downloading component libraries?
I do remember one can never have enough of these.

Sincerely,
Bob AD5VJ

One suggestion: there are a number of free viewrs for windows, either
read limited or 30 day limited, you could download some of them and see
if the problem happens there too

No bug on stable version or last svn version.

I test it (Gerbv 3.10) and it works fine.
Are you trying to open a project (this is not a gerber file format) or
a layer (that it actually the gerber files).
Have you read the Gerbv doc ?

Launching Gerbv, then try trying to open a pho file don't work, edge

At leas one BUG in kicad was definetly located here in Barazil (100%
reproductible), just check if it does not aply to you:

If a board does not have a PCB-edge defined, something is missing in the
gerber file. That was confirmed with my manufacturer too.

Hi Dan & Dave ...

Sorry to not reply before, I had an internet failure ...

Now, Gerbv is working, but can't load the "pho" file . To have it
working, I just double-clic on the file I want to open, and choose to
open it with Gerbv ...

But it seems that Gerbv can operate on multiple file of a same project
and I don't know how to open them in just one window ...

Re: [kicad-users] How to read the "pho" files ?

2009-01-19 Thread Dan Andersson

KiCad have a decent Gerber viewer itself, so I don't see the immediate reason
to use Gerbv there. However, it's worrisome if there are deviations on the
Gerber standard. I have had rather complex KiCad designs produced from my
Gerber files without the usual whinging PCB producer so I assume KiCad's Gerber
output is kosher.

My immediate problem with KiCad's Gerber output is to convert it to G-code to
run in EMC2 CNC milling software.

I tested two converters now and both refuses the KiCad code.

No,

GCAM still can't read KiCad Gerber files, even after the manual hack to please
Gerbv.

This means that I cannot use KiCad for my new CNC Milling machine yet. I'd
really really hate to be forced back to Eagle!

Re: [kicad-users] How to read the "pho" files ?

2009-01-19 Thread Dan Andersson
This is a bit weird:

Gerbv doesn't like the "G04" Gerber command ( comments etc ) so I manually
edited the file and tried again.
Then it complains on G01 so be gone with that too. Now Gerbv reads the file.

I suspect the Gerber changes have been added to KiCad's Gerber engine sinced I
tested last time, 9 month's ago or so.

Now I'm going to check if GCAM can read the same Gerber file, it couldn't
earlier...

[kicad-users] How to read the "pho" files ?

2009-01-19 Thread electric_phil
I just finish routing my pcb, and plot it in Gerber file format
which gives me several ".pho" files ( depend which ones layers I
choose ) ...

I thought I could read them with "Gerbv" (a gerber file viewer under
Linux ) but it can't load them ...

Are these ".pho" files Gerber format compatibles or just Gerbv non
fonctional ?

Thanks a lot
