Re: [kicad-users] Newbie question : pad design

2009-04-15 Thread Tobias Gogolin
Having worked in PCB design for a few years I found the cleanest method is
to duplicate the components that need pads options in the schematic too, and
then choose the different padstacks for the different options on the
distinct part references!

Ahh I see what you are trying to do now...

What you really need to do is define a new pad shape so that things like
the soldermask etc work out. (I see you have already tried Roberts idea)

I don't think there is a way to actually edit the shape of a pad as such,
just choose between the preset shapes. Someone else may have an idea or
two regarding that. It's not something I've ever tried to do.

HI... guess what :-) I've some stuff to move in a new lib :-)
Thanks Dave. Alex told me you where a Kicad wizard and my last hope was to
send you a direct email. But I got my answer very quickly.
I will probably bug you again when I will seriously begin to play with
PCBnew. (some tricks I remarked on your 995x board for eg.).

I have produced combination thru hole and surface mount modules. Use
a thru hole pad and a second surface mount pad. Make both the same pin #.
Also, when making a new module or schematic library part, it is
better to start a separate library or module library. If you add to the
supplied libraries, you risk losing your new parts is you upgrade to a
new version of KICAD. I make a separate library for each project and
copy parts to it from the standard libraries and then create new parts
as needed.

Tnks andy for this precise answer.

But it doesn’t solve my problem, as I absolutely need a pad design able to
accept both “thru hole” and CMS components (and not 2 separated and different
modules). The real problem is that I cannot predict which component will be
used in the future, depending on the market price, the availability and so on..
I need to keep all options as open as possible.

Anyway, you’re right, the question of the soldermask remains..

problem ? and if this is the answer, how could I “call” an external module
after my placement ?

A big THANKS Robert. It works !

And that was exactly what I needed.

At the beginning, I thought it was possible to design some “exotic” pad
within the pad editor… I lost quit a lot of time turning and turning around

Re: [kicad-users] Newbie question : pad design

2009-04-09 Thread Andy Eskelson
Hi Mark,

Doing things that way will cause problems. The system needs to know the
pad sizes and such like to calculate things like solder masks, thermal
zones and so on. Trying to put two pad outlines in the same module will
confuse things.

If the outline is the same, remember that the PCB outline must be correct
for size, then all you do is create the library, then the module, once you
are happy with that all you then need to do is duplicate the module, give
it a new name, edit the pads and save.

If you look at the Kicad libs, you will find a similar system, there are
DIP-8__300, and DPI-8__300_ELL, which are the same outline but with
different pad settings.

Re: [kicad-users] Newbie question : pad design

2009-04-09 Thread Robert
Hi Mark,

If you're trying to do what I think you're trying to do, just lay out
one set of pads for the SMD version, and one set for the through hole
version (I'm assuming the two sets of pads don't clash), and number the
pins appropriately for each set of pads. You'll then end up with two
pins 1, two pins two, two pins 3, and so on.

When you place the component you will need to lay tracks that connect
the two pins 1 together, the two pins 2 together, and so on.

Does that answer your question?

Regards,

Robert.

[kicad-users] Newbie question : pad design

2009-04-09 Thread F6ITU
Hi
I'm a 3 days old Kicad user (and a totally newbie in CAD CAM software… never
touched such a software before, excepted ExpressPCB)
I just finished understanding the "general idea" behind EEschemas, played with
the tutorial and some examples, and began to draw my first circuit. So far,
everything is working fine (excepted some mysterious duplication of components,
stacking one over the other).

But I'm now stuck trying to design a new "Module" (component outline).

My problem :
I want to add a new component in the module lib, a standard small DPDT relay
in a 10 pin dil package (compatible with the standard 10DIP-ELL300 package).
This component exists in 2 different pinout : classical DIL "thru hole" and SMT
mount. As I wish to keep the possibility to use either devices one the pcb will
be etched, I'd like to draw a module with its 10 "thru" pins AND 10 CMS
rectangular pads in the extension of the thru-hole-pads. (I wonder if I made
myself clear… English is definitely not my mother-thong)

I try to dig into the Kicad Yahoo group, but couldn't find any answer.

Is it possible and how ?

...or did someone allready designed this kind of module
<\lazy_mode>
Thanks for your attention
Mark

Explaining more... the project is the .pro file, then you create the
schematic, it's the .sch file, when you save it you get the file :)

[kicad-users] newbie question

2008-09-30 Thread tom_iphi
Hi,

I have just started playing with KiCAD by working through the
tutorial "KiCad Step by Step Tutorial" by David Jahshan: kicad at
iridec.com.au.

I'm stuck in libedit while creating a connector. I could create the
pins all right, but when I draw the rectangle around the pin names, it
won't remain visible, i.e. I draw it and when the final shape is
reached I press the left mouse button, then the whole object including
pins moves with the mouse. Then I place it somewhere and press the left
mouse button again and the rectangle is gone, while the pins are still
there.

What am I doing wrong?

I looked at all the menu choices to do a reset... no luck :(
I have looked through all of the files changed since I made the

Would someone be kind enough to point me in the right direction?
