[marxistindia] Disinvestment of VSNL IBP
February 6, 2002 Press Statement The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement: Making a mockery of the Prime Minister's pronouncement that his government does not want to liquidate the public sector, the Union Cabinet has taken a major decision to part with blue chip profit-making public sector companies. The prices at which the government equity in IBP and VSNL has been sold constitute a big bonanza for the private sector. The hard-earned assets of the Indian people built over half a century are being sold at throwaway prices. Clearly, this decision has been taken to bridge the burgeoning fiscal deficit on the eve of the annual budget. Such a distress sale makes neither economic nor common sense. It is akin to a farmer selling his land to meet his daily expenditure. The decision to impose a voluntary retirement scheme on government employees will further aggravate the already grim employment situation. More than 11 lakh employees are slated to lose their jobs. The CPI(M) strongly protests against these anti-people policies and warns the Vajpayee government that this unrestricted sale of India will not be accepted by the Indian people. end cpim website: http://www.cpim.org people's democracy website: http://pd.cpim.org To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Your use of Yahoo! [marxistindia] Decontrol of movement of essential commodities
February 6, 2002 Press Statement The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement: The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) strongly denounces the decision of the Union Cabinet to decontrol the movement of essential commodities and reduce the price control on essential drugs. These decisions will have far reaching consequences for the livelihood of crores of people. The sweeping decontrol is tantamount to the government abdicating its responsibility of procuring essential commodities at a minimum support price. This measure was the result of the freedom movement which assured protection to the farmer from all sorts of uncertainties while at the same time also protecting the consumer through a public distribution system. Leaving everything to the market -- the reigning philosophy of `reforms' -- had, in the past, ruined the lives of millions of farmers. It is, indeed, ominous that such a decision has come when there are reports of growing starvation deaths and distress suicides amongst the farmers. Further, it must be recollected that these restrictions on the movement of essential commodities were introduced, in the first place, to prevent speculative hoarding by traders leading to artificial price hikes. By removing the restrictions now, the Vajpayee government is making crores of people vulnerable by placing them at the mercy of predatory speculators and hoarders. end cpim website http://www.cpim.org people's democracy http://pd.cpim.org To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Your use of Yahoo! GIRCA is headed by May Bittel. Aged of 50 years, a protestant priest, May Bittel is for more than 25 years an activist for the Gypsy cause, in Switzerland as abroad. He is the symbol of the fight for recognition of the Swiss Gypsy rights. A member of the Swiss Foundation Assurer l'avenir des Gens du Voyage, of the Swiss Commission against Racism, unavoidable respondent of the Swiss authorities, he has kept his convictions alive and all his independence, that he shows in numerous TV, radio and newspaper interviews. -- FASCISM IN THE NEWS 02) Gypsies Sue IBM in Switzerland Jonathan Fowler (AP) 31 Jan 02 GENEVA -- Gypsy campaigners who allege IBM expertise helped the Nazis commit mass murder more efficiently filed a lawsuit in Switzerland on Thursday seeking moral reparation and tens of thousands of dollars in damages. Gypsy International Recognition and Compensation Action is suing IBM on behalf of four Gypsies from Germany and France and one Polish-born Swedish Gypsy, said May Bittel, the head of the Geneva-based group. All five plaintiffs were orphaned in the Holocaust. The Gypsy campaigners - who use the name Roma for their community - began planning the lawsuit after U.S. author Edwin Black claimed in a book published last February that IBM punch-card machines enabled the Nazis to make their killing operations more efficient. An IBM Europe spokesman in Paris, Ian Colley, told The Associated Press said he could not comment on the lawsuit because the company had not received a copy. IBM has said its German subsidiary, Deutsche Hollerith Maschinen GmbH, was taken over by the Nazis before World War II, like other companies operating in Germany. The fact that the Hollerith machines were used by the Nazis has been known for many years - but we have very little information about what happened, Colley said. He said IBM abhors the Nazi atrocities. The lawsuit was filed in Geneva because IBM's wartime European headquarters were in the city. Swiss law is clear - selling goods and services destined to be used in a crime is itself criminal, Bittel said. The plaintiffs are seeking $20,000 each in damages from IBM. Bittel said the suit was based on moral reparation and that he expected more Holocaust survivors to join the suit. Our aim is to achieve recognition of IBM's complicity in crimes against humanity, he said. According to Black's book, the punch-card machines were used to codify information about people sent to concentration camps. The number 12 represented a Gypsy inmate, while Jews were recorded with the number 8. The code D4 meant a prisoner had been killed. IBM's German division has paid into Germany's government-industry initiative to compensate people forced to work for the Nazis during the war. The German parliament cleared the way last May for payments to begin from the $4.6 billion fund. Gypsies are one of the groups covered. Last April, a class action lawsuit against IBM in New York was dropped after lawyers said they feared it would slow down payments from the German Holocaust fund. German companies had sought freedom from legal actions before committing to the fund. - - - - - 03) Marking Holocaust Day, German Jewish leader says neo-Nazis as dangerous as terrorists Tony Czuczka (AP)
