President decides to present orders, medals
President Tran Duc Luong issued a decision on August 17 to present orders
and medals to cadres and employees who made great contributions during the
anti-US War of resistance.
Ninety one cadres and employees will be presented for the first phase,
including those from the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Education and
Training, the Editorial Board of the Nhan Dan newspaper, Vietnam Paper
Corporation, Vietnam Cement Corporation, the National Archive Department,
Party Central Committee's Office, State Inspectorate, the Radio Voice of
Vietnam and the Ho Chi Minh National Political Institute.
NA vice chairman visits China
National Assembly Vice Chairman Vu Dinh Cu, who is currently on a working
visit to China, was received by Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee
of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China on August 27.
Vice Chairman Cu conveyed best regards from Party General Secretary Nong Duc
Manh and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An to Chairman Li Peng and
other Chinese leaders. He said Vietnam welcomed Chairman Li's upcoming visit
to Vietnam.
Chairman Li spoke of China's experience in and preparations for the Three
Gorges Power Project on the Yangtze River. The new hydro-electric power
plant, when completed, will be the biggest in China.
Mr Li welcomed the two legislative agencies' exchange of experiences and
co-operation, which he said, would make further contributions to
strengthening the relations between the two countries. (VNA)
Lego national flag to be built by schoolchildren
Thirty thousand schoolchildren in Ho Chi Minh City will fit 360 coloured
Lego bricks together to make a national flag of four metres in height and 60
metres in length on September 2 at the Sport Centre of the Military Zone 7,
Ho Chi Minh City.
This is to celebrate the upcoming National Day (September 2). It is jointly
organised by the Vietnam Fair and Exhibition Centre and LEGO company.
The participating pupils are also encouraged to contribute a small sum for
disadvantaged children.
Japanese-funded rail bridge project to begin soon
The Project Managing Board of the Vietnam Union of Railways (VUR) signed a
contract on August 27 with its partners in Hanoi to begin building five new
bridges on the trans-Vietnam railways route.
The project, worth JPY 488 million from the Japanese government's official
development assistance (ODA) and VND 112.4 billion (roughly US $7.5 million)
from the VUR, will be jointly implemented in 20 months by the Thang Long
Corporation (TLC) and the Civil Engineering Corporation 1 (CIENCO1).
These five rail bridges include Chiem Son, Bong Son, Ru Ri, Song Chua and
Thach Tuan, with a total length of 1,400 metres. They are designed to have a
capacity of 15 tonnes for loading and be safe up to speeds of 110 kilometres
per hour for passenger trains and 80 kilometres per hour for freight
trains. (VNA)
Flood hits Gia Lai
A serious flood caused by heavy rains swept through Duc Co district of Gia
Lai Central Highland province on August 20-21.
Seven one hectares of crops and eight hectares of coffee were reported to be
totally damaged. Ten kilometres of roads and a number of irrigation works
were also damaged.
The provincial People's Committee of Gia Lai has carried out necessary
measures to help people overcome the consequences.
