more time and resources.

Well mine is run from the starter over to the left side of the firewall,

Dan,

I saw that you were having to really tug on it to get it engaged. My
first thought was that you might want to adjust the bolt that pushes the
electrical contacts so it makes contact a bit easier. The starter gear
is probably already fully engaged. I also noticed that your starter
cable was pulling from one side of the starter pull arm rather than a
clevis pulling straight on the starter arm. That can also be
problematic.

My starter cable has a "T" handle and is mounted in the lower left panel
with a gentle "S" in the cable before it feeds through the center of the
fire wall. It has always worked quite easily.

Dan,

First, what type e-mail software are you using. Your e-mails are
very hard to read.
Everything is run together.

On the starter, I think the pull type starter, when set up
correctly,is probably one of
the more reliable starters except of course one of those new $700 types.

My cable runs nearly straight back from the starter to the top center
of the dash and
my throttle is on the left sidewall. That setup works great for me.

My Ray-Allen (MAC) elevator trim assembly is still working fine at 340 hours.
The indicator LED assembly went out early on and I never bothered to get
it repaired as I never referenced it and it was located in a hard to see area
anyway. Later the servo unit was inop with blown fuses. I cut the power
wire to the LED assembly and that fixed the problem.

Hi Larry;

As I found out at the Gathering this year the Continental pull starter can
be a real pain to use and I'm considering the possibility of replacing it
with an electric solenoid type starter even though my current starter has
recently been rebuilt, either that or re-routing the pull cable so it works
easier than it currently does if that's possible. It takes a very strong
pull to get it to work.

Do you have that kind of problem with yours?

Finally got the starter repaired and 211LF back in the air this
afternoon for a couple of high speed passes and a couple of
"stop and go" landings.

For those of you with Continental pull type starters, don't damage
the bushing for the plunger on the starter as I did when replacing
the "garlock" seal. They don't make the part any more and you
can't buy a new one anywhere. I found a used bushing from a
rebuilder for $35. It really isn't an item that wears. It's the separate
seal that leaks the oil. With that repaired and a new O ring in the
quick drain I finally got back in the air after three weeks. Sure
felt good

Reread the my previous post. I ran across this ad on barnstormers.com and know
nothing about it beyond what's in the ad. It is located somewhere in NY. An
O-200 Continental is nominally 100 HP. I would suggest having the owner scan
the last few years of logs and all of the overhaul information as well as
sending a few pictures if it piques your interest.

Hey Boys:
For those of you who want a more modern engine, I've got a Subaru EJ-22
with a Les Palmer PSRU for sale. It has a total of 55 hours on it and runs
great. It is a little heavier than an O-200, but it has some very positive
aspects to it. I'm asking $3,500.

KR> protect the wing walk area

2008-10-14 Thread harold woods

Hi Netters.
This is for those that are building and for those that have built their KRs.
Out an extra layer of glass on the wing walk area. Put some adhesive gritty
strips on this area.
Protect the wing while building by cutting a piece of carpet to fit this
area. Cut strips of wood about 5/8" x 2" x 18 " and epoxy them to the
carpet. The rows of wood will conform to the curve of the wing. You can walk
all over this simple protection. When you are finished, save them. When
doing overhauls and inspections and repairs, bring them back into use to
protect the wing. When not in use they can be rolled up and stored on a
shelf.

KR> Narco ELT-10 battery corrosion

2008-10-14 Thread Randy Smith
My question is, Why mount the ELT on the ground plane? An ELT when working
requires nothing but an antenna off the top. If you are using a separate
antenna I would move the ELT to the side. I have 3 ELT's 2 are mounted to the
side of the fuselage (1 fabric 1 glass) with the antenna hooked to the ELT. The
last one is mounted to a flat board with the Strobe box, ox bottle, and a few
other small items and the antenna is mounted on the top with a 4"x4" sheet of
aluminum. This airplane is fabric to. 2 of these planes are certified.

Could it be that you should be grounding the ELT case to the aluminum plate
after all? That way there would be no difference of potential and no
electrolysis.

Question for you electronics geeks. I have an older Narco ELT (yes, it's
the honkin' big orange thing that only xmits on 121.5). When my Piet went
over on its nose a few years ago, the ELT didn't go off but the incident
was
sufficient to make me replace the battery since I'm an FAR-abiding pilot
and
aircraft owner and that's what the FARs call for.

I replaced the battery with a brand new Airtex replacement from Chief
Aircraft and reinstalled the ELT in a better location (behind the pilot's
seat), secured it on the ground plane (a large flat piece of aluminum behind
the pilot's seat), and we're good to go again. Now the problem. About
two
years later, there is a white powdery corrosion showing up under the ELT,
mostly under the battery where it sits on the aluminum ground plane. Mind
you, I painted the aluminum with an epoxy paint before the installation and
the battery housing is thick orange plastic, so there really isn't anything

electrical touching anything metallic. So what am I doing wrong? Should I
replace the battery and reinstall the unit with a rubber cushion between it
and the ground plane that it's installed on (along with the ELT antenna)?

I guess it really doesn't matter since nobody will hear the tree fall in
the
forest after next February anyway, as long as I stay on 121.5 Mhz ;o)
