Since it is all made in China anyway, might as well get the 1 amp trickle
charger from harbor Freight for $6 on sale. Gets the job done just as well.

2009-02-09 Thread George Bearden
I work in an IT dept, and sometimes the old batteries get passed around. I
think that many of them will have life left even if they don't perform. I
think many of them need de-sulfating. I have a couple desulfator devices and
have saved MANY times the price of them saving batteries. Friend brought
over a $279 Yellow Top, new, old-stock. Has been sitting fer a coupla years,
dead flat. It wouldn't take a charge at all no way. I put the desulfator on
there, powered by my 100 watts of solar on my 5th wheel. Doesn't cost me
nuthin. I left it on there a month, and returned it functioning like new. My
niece has a motorcycle shop. The mechanics never seem to have time to keep
alla the batteries charged, so they lose a lot. I went out to the recycle
bin, gathered up a coupla hunert pounds of them and restored them for her.
Dint cost me anything in electricity either.

Hi Oscar,

Yes it will make a trickle charger for any size battery.

I have salvaged several of the UPS units you are talking about. Generally
its not the batteries that go bad and you can put thoes small batteries on a
regular 12 volt charger and recharge them. Normally for me its been the
circut board that goes bad from power surges or whatever. Sometimes you will
find a small fuse soldered somewhere on the power supply board or power
supply side of the main board. If you can solder in a new fuse you might be
in business.

These are not only a trickle charger for batteries but the supply from the
batteries is a 12 volt to 110 converter for the duplex outlets. I took one
of the units apart, disconnected the wires from the batteries and then
connected it back up to the battery in my truck. Leaving the circut boards
and 110 outlets intact. Made a great 110 converter for my truck. I have been
thinking this arrangement would also give me a really cheap way to put a 110
outlet on the panel or somewhere in the KR that I could plug in a laptop or
other type equipment if I needed to and the weight is small ounces.

One could certainly do that. But why? A quick look on line and I found wall
wart type trickle chargers for as little as $16. Then you have something that
is sealed, electrically safe, and probably has a UL listing rather than using
something in a way it wasn't intended to be used.

Take the UPS, replace the batteries in it, and use it to protect your new HD
TV, home computer, or some other electronic toy??

However, it occurred to me that it might also be just fine to use as a trickle
charger for any 12V battery of this type, if I replace the internal battery

this work OK?

These small desktop PC style UPSs get tossed out all the time and if they

they would make dandy chargers. Comments?Oscar Zuniga

We guys are still lucky here not to be in the road of the dam fires in

early yesterday they was a VERY VERY load clap of thunder, it felt like the
windows were going to blow in, I found out latter it hit a tree 100 yards
from my hanger, one a mile from my home, where my KR and Serge's Zenith are

from the hanger, the Fire Brigade got it out with any problems.

Generally, those will work for similar batteries. Smaller batteries
would likely require the charge current be decreased, and larger ones,
increased. In the absence of any actual numbers, I suspect those
charge current ranges will overlap when the batteries are close in their
ratings.

KR> was- last few flights...Now Crosswinds

2009-02-09 Thread Jeff Scott
I got into some early spring winds with the KR the previous weekend. After
meeting some friends for the $100 breakfast burrito, I got back to Los Alamos
to find the winds 360@17G21 for landing runway 27. Correcting the anemometer
for our 7150' altitude, that's 19G23 gusting up out of the canyon and across
the runway (read strong up and down drafts). Before I rebuilt the tail on this
KR I limited myself to 10 kt crosswinds in Los Alamos. With the additional
rudder and better elevator control, this landing wasn't pretty, but the plane
could have handled more as I didn't run out of controls.

I never thought of the KR as much of a crosswind airplane before, but as Joe
demonstrated in his trigear, and me in my taildragger, they can handle quite a
bit of crosswind. I love flying this airplane.

don't think I had all of it in, but I was more concerned about staying on the

I did some other flying on Saturday- but that flight is better reported around

There was a fellow from Sweden at OSH. in about 1979 or 80 that was going
to fly his plane to Sweden by the Greenland, Iceland route. He had a reserve
tank built that would be on the seat beside him. His was the first KR I had
seen with flaps.
I guess I can't really say that Mark wouldn't be the first because I
never found out if the guy made it.

OK, knock it off guys before Langford does figure out a way to get his plane
over there. I kind of thought I might get to catch up a few hours on him.
I did some forced economy vs. speed testing yesterday by following a 172 out to
breakfast. At about 2700 rpm, @ 125 mph indicated and burned just about 3
gal/hr. Came back home at 3050 rpm and that gives me just over 150 mph and just
under 4.5 gal/hr. There was 6 or 7 planes that flew out together and ya should
have heard them when I said I was only burning 3 gal/ hr.
I also found my upper liimit to x wind. Sure am glad the runway was at least

He won't need the long range tanks, he's going north to Greenland then a
short hop over to Iceland then the long flight over the Channel to Scotland
thats about a 750 mile hop. So he should be fine with his wing tanks full.

Unfortunately, neither Burt's decision to stop selling plans or Jeanette's
decision to continue selling plans, has / had anything to do with which
foam was the best to use.

One decision was based on liability and the other on "how am I going
