KR> KR2 crash, June 23rd, Richfield Utah

2010-08-07 Thread ttcse/Tom
While de-hoarding in my storage unit today I saw an old stack of printed KR
crash reports.  (I always found flight and crash reports interesting)

I was just now google-ing for more and saw this recent one, I don't recall
hearing of it on the list ...

KR> Fw: Whatever happened to videoBob?

2010-08-07 Thread Mark Langford
The Gathering is coming up soon, and it's inevitable that somebody will ask
about videos of the Gathering, maybe if videos of past Gatherings were
available yet, and eventually, "whatever happened to Video Bob"?. He
answers that below. It reminds me of something William Wynne says often,
"every day that passes, you're one day closer to losing your medical". Bob
is one of those guys with infectious good humour...he's always smiling, has
something positive to say, and is happy to see you. Let's keep Bob in mind
at the Gathering this year, and we'll expect him at MVN (or wherever) next
year...

The "new" AS504x wing profile has almost identical characteristics as the
RAF48, except for lower drag, which translates into higher speeds and more
efficiency. Considering they are created the same way when scratch
building, it is a "free lunch". The thicker AS5048 tapering to AS5045
yields more fuel capacity. I believe Navaero now sells a version of the new
AS504x airfoil. As Dan said, there's a lot more info on the subject of the
new KR airfoil (designed specifically for the KR2S, but applicable to the
KR2 and KR1 as well) at http://www.krnet.org/as504x/ .

Hi Dan,
Thanks very much for your response.I have a 2 L type 4 VW engine that runs
exceptionally well on a distributor similar to a Bosch type 009 distributor

KR> wings

2010-08-07 Thread Dan Heath
I can't tell you the advantages of one over the other. I have the stock
wing, maybe an advantage is that there are wing skins built for it that you
can buy. I understand that the new wing is faster, and has more fuel
capacity. I do believe that everyone who is building a KR these days, and
has the opportunity to choose the airfoil, is going with the new wing. I
would if I were, buy I finished a project that was started with the RAF 48,
and don't think there are enough advantages to change it out, but do think
that there are enough advantages to build it if starting from scratch. Mark
L. has a long write up on it on his web site, and if you search the
archives, you should be able to find it.

Welcome to the KR family.

Why do you need another set of plugs? Use Bosch PLATNUM  plugs with the backup
system, it is better than puting new holes in the heads.

I too bought a new regulator. mine ended up being a bad crimp on one of my
voltage regulator as I recall. i am sure it was a wire connection and it was on
or around the regulator. i have a GP VW 2180.

Hey guys,
Absolutly a perfect day today and I am sitting her typing. Tried to start
N357CJ and the battery was dead, I thought that I had left a gps on or
something so I just stuck the charger to it for 20 min. and triedd to crank it
and she barly turned over. The battery was new in March but I thought I better
take a closer look. When I looked at the battery I could see it was bulged out
on 3 sides and when I got it out it actually had a blow out hole in the middle
of a verticle corner on the groung end. I took it back to the battery warehouse
nad they thought heat but couldn't be sure. They also said they were going to
keep it as an example. I bought a new battery of a larger cranking amp size
that they did not have before. I am gooing to check ground and power
connections again and I may change the voltage regulator. I have the JD alt.
and regulator. There has been no sign of over voltage as 14.1 is the highest I
have seen and mostly 13.8 to 14.1. No popped breakers and cowl temps and engine
temps have not gone where it should have affected a battery. Leave it to me to
find new ways to not be able to fly.

I'm going to build a KR2S. I have look and studies a lot about this little bird.

One thing I don't have a good answer to, is what kind of wing-profile I should

I have not the opportunities to try either the old or the new profile.

Can somebody tell what the different to fly the old or the new profile?

What is the advantage to fly one or the other?

Will be very pleased if somebody can help me.

KR> 2nd set plugs

2010-08-07 Thread Dan Heath
Eric,

Are you talking about a VW engine? What kind of plugs, depth of the
threaded area? The only place I have seen a problem, is on the VW when the
plug treaded area has been bored out, to allow for the 1/2" reach of the
aircraft plugs for the magneto. It is not uncommon for these to get blown
out.

However, if you have genuine VW heads, they have plenty of meat, where the
plug goes, either one. And if you use auto plugs with a 3/4" reach, or can
find aircraft plugs with a 3/4" reach that you are willing to pay for, you
should not need any type of insert.
