KR> KR2 Plans

2011-02-10 Thread Craig Williams
I just bought KR2S plans from them last Oct. It is strange that they are not
listed but I am sure they are still available. The company was moving to a new
location because of flooding I believe so that may have something to do with
it. Give them a call.

KR> KR2 Plans

2011-02-10 Thread Seth and Karen Jersild

Is a KR2 / KR2S built by buying the KR1 plans and applying all the
mods people have made over time ? Is there no way to buy an actual set
of KR2 plans ?

---

Hello Kieran,
I was surprised to follow your link and not find the KR2/KR2S plans on
that page, because that's where I ordered them from just two months
ago. I suspect it's a temporary thing on the website. The KR2 and KR2S
have their own plans (the "S" modifications come with the original KR2
plans as a supplement). You could try contacting NVAero directly or
maybe someone here will be able to explain why they don't seem to be
available at the moment...

2011-02-10 Thread Kieran Shanley
Hi Guys,

This is probably the dumbest question out but where do you get the
plans for a KR2 or KR2S ? I saw that http://www.nvaero.com is listed
as the supplier of plans on http://www.krnet.org/.

On their web site they only list KR1 plans and builders manual:

http://www.nvaero.com/products/Rand-KR%252d1-Plans-and-Builders-Manual.html

Is a KR2 / KR2S built by buying the KR1 plans and applying all the
mods people have made over time ? Is there no way to buy an actual set
of KR2 plans ?

Told you it was a dumb question and apologies in advance.

Cheers,

Kieran

I went to Barnes and Nobles and picked up a book published by SA design
called " THE STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO ENGINE BLUEPRINTING". This would be
a good book for anyone to add to your library to help you understand the
finer points of engine machine work how to build to closer tolerences. I
suspect it would be some good preparatory reading prior to the Corvair
College. 20 bucks well spent.

I also have a 4130 roll bar, very similar to a RV4.

If you look at my web page below and look at
"Latest Update Photo page" - from the heading at the top- and see bottom
3 photos

Also the
Finished Building Photo's" - page - and look at the 2nd and 3rd row of
photo's.

It is hard to see, but there are two cables from the top of the bar to the
tail bulk head, to stop the bar being pulled onto the pilot while the plane
is sliding down the runway upside down tail first.

You do know that both escaped from that crash. One with little to no injury
and the other with what could be considered minor, which he probably would
have gotten even with a roll bar.

I am not disputing the benefits of a roll bar, but consider the weight and
where it is going to be in the CG.

Interesting that 1964 was a special year for corvair because it was the only
year VW made a type "F" series 1300cc engine.

As for KR's what kind of shelf life are people REALLY getting with vinyl ester
resin? and, What amount of work time are you getting for lay ups at 72 to 75
degrees shop temp? (I think varies with amount of hardener one puts in like
polyester resin but would like to hear).

KR> Stall strips / Tom in Orlando

2011-02-10 Thread Andy Mckevitz
Archives last mention stall strips in 1998, and Tom's Att email account is

Tom are you still around?

Can anyone enlighten me on how to place a stall strip on a wing?

I know what they are for, just not what size and position to place them on the
leading edge.

This question brings up another great selling point regarding the Corvair
engine. The CorvAircraft list has several very reputable engine builder
members who offer machine shop services, including head work, as well as
complete engine builds. But why not build it yourself? The Corvair is an
even simpler engine than a VW (if that's even imaginable) to rebuild. And
William Wynne holds several "Corvair Colleges" across the country each year,
where William, Mark "Petz", Roy Szarafinski, and several others are on hand
to help wherever they can. People typically bring core engine parts cleaned
up and ready to build, and one of the above folks will go over it with a
fine tooth comb and dial indicators, etc to make sure the case and crank is
suitable for aircraft use, and then assist when needed as you build your
engine on the spot. These colleges have been completely free over the
years, although in recent years there's been a small charge to cover meals
and supplies. I think at the CC in November there were something like 11
engines run on the test stand for breakin.

I've always had the attitude that if you want it done right, do it yourself,
although notable exceptions are the three guys mentioned above. Having said
that, it sure it easy to build a Corvair engine yourself, especially with
William's conversion manual and the help you'd get at a Corvair College.
That's something else you get from the CorvAircraft list, advice from some
top notch machinists, as well as information regarding the whereabouts of
the next College, for example. They are usually southeast, west coast, and
midwest, spread throughout the year.

1964 heads are cut for smaller outside diameter cylinders. The bore is the
same as the later engines, but the '64 cylinder walls are thinner, so the
counterbores are smaller in the '64 heads. So you'd have to have them opened
up for later cylinders, which complicates things and limits your choices
somewhat. If you are boring the heads and case for larger cylinders anyway,
1964 heads work fine because they'll be opened up anyway. All of my engines
have been based on '64 heads because nobody else wants them and they work
fine for me.

I am using 4130 steel for my roll bar but my plane is a radical departure from
a standard KR so I don't know how carbon fiber would work. I think that
strength is only 1/2 the equation here. Abrasion resistance is just as
important if your scraping down the runway upside down at 30-40 knots. I would
go as many layers as you can afford.

Ok Corvair experts

I found a set of 65-67 110hp heads. Should I use my 64 heads or get theses? I
know there was some issue with the 64 head gasket sealing area. If I am going
to have some special machining done on the 64 heads before I can use them it
will be cheaper to buy the later model heads.

and will wrap it around with cf
210 gr sq meter.
What are your fealings about how many layers I need for a save produkt.
The bar is about 3 x 3 inch. I am planning for 3 layers or should I take 4 or
