After looking at the suggestions, Google's SketchUp fits bill be just fine
and a great tutorial to go along with it.
Great suggestion, thanks guys! :-)
If anyone out there hasn't tried this program and is in the same boat I was,
try it, it works great!

I recently turned loose of my wallet and purchased a reconditioned
unit ($499) and have made two flights with the unit. I think it is
GREAT for the money paid. The single feature I thought I would not
like after receiving it was the sectional overlay. When flying any
direction other then north, the map is rotated from 0 to 180 degrees
(upside down when flying south) and the print is upside down. It
functions exactly as if you were holding a paper map. However, a
single press of the button "North up" will rotate the map for
reading. I called the Airventure Pilot company and they explained
that it would be impossible to digitalize all the info contained on
the sectional to have it work otherwise. Turns out it really is not
a problem. I always flew with my maps upside down when flying other
then North to give me a better reference to the geography anyway.

The basic package is really all you need. They offer a GPS antenna
and external battery pack but there is no need for the external
antenna. I can pick up 6 satellites in my house. The unit does
require external power but I hooked it up to aircraft power and with
the flip of a switch I have backup power for my avionics from my
small fuel pump backup battery. With the amount of information you
can get in flight and all the capabilities the unit has, I'm amazed
it doesn't sell for twice the price.

I continue to use my seven year old Lowrance 500 as backup and the
two agree within 1 mph, 1 degree on heading, and 15 to 20 feet
altitude. I do occasionally experience the unit locking up and have
to reboot if I do a lot of screen switching at a very fast rate. If
that happens, any flight plan I have programmed or other data comes
back up on the reboot. I do find the "Table of contents" in the
manual a bit lacking and I'd like to see an "Index of terms" in the
back but, all in all, I give it a 9.9 on a scale of 10. Hey, even my
KR is not a perfect 10. :-)

I do plan on redoing the analysis on the wings, fuselage, and spars. I was
wondering if others had traveled down this path before and what their
numbers were.

According to my plans, the gross weight is specified to be 900# but many of
the weight and balance sheets I see have gross weights 2-300# higher. How
do they/we/I justify this? If we can safely increase the gross, we should
be able to trade gross for some wingspan. I don't plan on doing anything
unless the numbers tell me I can.

As I have some major rework to do on the fin and sternpost, I was wondering
about dividing the elevator into two halves and using, say, two L shaped metal

bolted with two bolts (3/8?) o9n each side. This would make it easy to remove

KR> Flying Stories

2011-12-22 Thread Phillip Matherson
Where are all the inspirational flying stories
-

What about the ones that almost stop us from flying again.

This is my Engine Failure on takeoff story. ( Third post luck, I cannot get
them to post to the net)

25th August approx 1730 Daylight saving time. Down under.

Take off RW 23,( sealed-crop duster strip lot of trees and houses) Full
power to about 400 feet about 1 mile from runway, no warning engine stopped
dead. Nowhere to go ahead 160dec turn to right to the only open field, tried
to start twice, tanks, fuel pump etc, nothing, by now low and fast. Trim,
slow down full flap, but running out of intended field. Had to decide to go
over or though the fence, went over, around a tree ( not good) then a
channel I had to STALL over the irrigation channel, I think the left wing
clipped the ground first ( now I was only along for the ride) then flipped
to L wing down, and nose wheel and Left main collapse and ground loop to the
left and stopped.

Someone was looking after me as it did not flip over.

What did 007 say ? shaken and VERY stirred.

Engine stoppage caused by the Electronic ign. wire inside the distributor
rubbed and shorted on the rotor.

Damage- nose wheel and one of three prop blades, Left main, 3 x broken bolts
and damage to underside of inner wing, the nose wheel folded back but sat
under the F/WALL and keep the nose up off the rough ground. What a very
strong little aircraft!!!

Lessons leant, forget restarting the engine twice and fly the plan, how many
times have we heard that Should have done a Mayday call, as if it had of
turned over, I could have been in trouble.

KR2 flying again.

But needs some underside and wingtip paint sometime.

Accident reports and inspections done.

KR> iFly 700

2011-12-22 Thread George Kolasinski
Mark, -- I bought one of these units. I was surprise by the simplicity and
ease of working this unit. This unit has been pretty accurate. The
display formats are something we all have learned to work with in our
aviation education. I had the chance to fly recently with a friend that was
using a different brand and I had my unit and ran it to compare it. The
700 accurately placed us on the VFR chart format as to the flight path we
were following (no matter what visual level I was on). The other unit had
us two mile right of route the whole trip (going and return). Would I
recommend? Yes.

recall how many bolts through each spar half now. but from looking at the
photos, it looks like a total of 8 AN3 bolts through the spar plates capturing
the two spar halves. The elevator bellcrank is also mounted to the two bolts
that go through the center between the two spar halves. I have roughly 370

Rich,
I trailered my KR-2 fuselage to the EAA Woodworking Workshop in 1994 to
demonstrate installation of the Diehl wingskin kit. We did not finish the

I was also convinced that week to convert to the fixed tri-gear.

I work with Mark Forss at AirVenture in the Composites Workshop every year.
Highly recommend the volunteer experience at Oshkosh.

Now many of you are probably well past needing something like this, but I'm

draw attention to the KR in an audience of likely builders.

Mark tells me that there are several woodworking projects being considered

that it was "thrown in the hat".

Mark's email addy is mfo...@eaa.org and I bet it would "ramp up the
