KR> KR-2 spin /crash in Idaho

2014-12-07 Thread Mac McConnell-Wood
I seem to recall someone telling me they had to lean over the panel to get
some forward c of g in order to get out of a spin.

C of g is very important in a short coupled KR.
Over here the CAA stipulated C of G no further back than the rear face of
the main spar. That was for the original short KR2 - and a long time ago.
Probably all changed now.

KR> Axel alignment

2014-12-07 Thread Sid Wood
I went with 20 inches per Joe Horton and several other recommendations
derived from KR-2S operations. My aircraft is a stock KR-2 with Diehl
tri-gear and Diehl wing skins.
I measured the cg on my airplane using digital scales while climbing in and
out, and also using sand bags to find the moment and tipping point. I could
easily make the aircraft tip with less than my full 200 pound weight trying
to climb on or off with the wheels at 17 inches. After playing with those
data points on my Excel weight and balance spread sheet, I verified that 20
inches would be the optimum number. My KR-2 is still on the jack stands
waiting for other changes. These wheel location numbers have not been
tested in operation on my KR-2 yet. Your results may vary.

I'm about ready to drill my landing gear legs. Are we still at 20 inches aft
of the leading edge for a tri gear? I just want to confirm. This is not a
mistake that I want to make.?

If you read the article it also says that the FAA/NTSB is withholding the
video. It apparently shows the view over the pilot's right shoulder as he
spun in to his death... I don't think anyone really wants to see that.

Where is the link to the VIDEO? I just looked at the article on line and
don't see one. I believe they are referring to spinning a KR2 with a
Continental engine? Is that so?

I just received my December issue of EAA's Sport Aviation Magazine and the
story of the KR-2 "A Tragic Spin Test Video" is featured on pages 82 - 84.
That is two magazines it has made. Wonder how many more it will make.

KR> KR-2 spin /crash in Idaho

List-Post: krnet@list.krnet.org

Contrary to some pilots out there, I would like to see the video in question.
Many things can be learned from the actions of others, especially when the
actions involve life or death in aircraft. I send my condolences to the family
and friends of the pilot and feel that since he had a camera taking pictures of
the flight, many of us could learn about the spin characteristics of the KR-2.
I feel that this particular pilot wanted to learn and possibly pass on his
flight experiences to others and that is why he went to the trouble of
installing the camera. What a shame if we pilots don?t take advantage of his
experience.

I own N54PB which is a conventional, built to plans KR-2 with a 1830cc VW with
turbo charger and retractable landing gear. I have never spun my bird but had
done rolls and stalls in it. I have some training in spins in a Citabria over
Apple Valley California back in the early 70s. I also have about 4000 hours of
jet simulator training in F-4s, DC-8, Dc-10, L-1011, B-727, and B757.

Your thoughts may very.

I do not think the actual video was released to the public. Here is the link to
