I worry about the loss of continuity in the upper skin to make space for the
scissors where the fibreglass attachment to the spar is critical.

KR> KR-1 Corvair...

2015-01-20 Thread Dan Prichard
Look at the krnet. Lynn Hyder put an o235 on his modified kr2. I saw it a few
months ago at his daughters house in SW Portland. Wings were sawed off. He was
trying to sell the engine.

 > Has anyone flown a KR-1/Corvair combo?

I don't know of one, but Richard Shirley has a 3300 Jabiru on his KR-1,
which is essentially the same power, but lighter. Some weight in the
tail would be required, and the wing loading would be high, and landing
speed correspondingly higher than with a lighter engine. But that's
essentially what I plan on doing, with more wing area and a longer tail
to tame pitch sensitivity. Loads of fun would be assured, as well as
200 mph plus, straight and level.

Steve Trentmans's turbine KR-2T has flown plenty, but it's a
gas-guzzler, at something like 12 gph. There are details from Steve at
http://www.n56ml.com/strent.html, and also in one of the Pine Bluff
gathering sites on www.KRnet.org.

I agree these are learning platforms. As to the effect, I think of how minimal
stall strips are and yet they have a major effect. BTW, the F4U Corsair,
arguably the best piston fighter ever made, had a dangerous tendency to
snap-stall the right wing under a couple different conditions during landing on
a carrier and during a abort when power is suddenly added. A 6" stall strip
added to the left wing changed the whole situation for the better.
Someone mentioned affecting the structure of the wing, and I would also be
concerned about creating a stress point at the corners of the openings for
these things, from which a crack could extend. Need to strengthen and round the
corners I would think.

KR> spoilers

2015-01-20 Thread bjoenunley
I would make a spoiler very much like a belly board. ?Lay the spoiler flat
against the wing, hinged to the wing, use some sort of actuator arm to extend
it.?
I feel that I should make some comment about the holes in the spoilers but I
believe that we have had that discussion.?

KR> Weight And ballance

2015-01-20 Thread stefkr2 at kpnmail.nl
Kr friends,
I have maybey a stupid question.
We are almost at the point that we will start with the engine mount. So I have
heard that there is a possability to calculate the distance. So this I will all
understand. I want to do 1 weight And ballance sesion (2 pax, 1 pax, full fuel,
low fuel).
I want to do an exstra weight sesion without Wings. This all outside. Is there
a possiblity to calculate all the data so I can do a w without wings so we
can do this inside, to check that the engine mount is oke. Or do you all say,
this is not possible And you need for a good check in all times the wings.
Greets and thank you

"Has anyone got any tips on how best to attach it to the ply bulkhead."

Hello Peter,

I used stainless steel truss head sheet metal screws around the perimeter. Both
sides have the traditional piano hinge and the top has the full width (radius)
angle for the forward cowling so the only place I had to add screws was across
the bottom. Don't forget the Fiberfrax between them and good luck with drilling
that titanium. I used cobalt drills and a lot of oil on the stainless and it
wasn't what I would call easy. I would assume the titanium is going to be
tougher but also lighter.

I think they're a great idea. This is the fun of experimental airplanes, to

I'm considerably behind the curve when it comes to reading posts to this
list, but I did notice some discussion on spoilers. The obvious first choice
is to go with conventional sailplane-style spoilers that are essentially hinged
flaps that deploy upwards off the upper surface of the wing, but the ones used
by Mooney are interesting in their own way. They are the Precise Flight
"SpeedBrakes" and they operate scissor-style as they emerge from the wing.
Picture here:
https://preciseflight.com/general-aviation/shop/speedbrakes/ and they do have a
system available for experimental aircraft but they want $4595 for it ;o) They
are electric, the set weighs 9 lbs. but that includes electric actuators. A
clever builder could come up with a mechanical scissors motion and dispense
with the electrics to save the weight of actuators.

It obviously took a great deal of engineering and testing to determine the best
place to put them on the airfoil. Anybody got a wind tunnel? ;o) Just more
food for thought.

"I have posted to youtube the video of the KR flight with the camera on the

Awesome video Larry! It is amazing how much your belly barn door affects the
wind noise when it is first deployed. With the recent discussions an excellent
example of what it should look like.

Someone had to do those first. I like the idea. I have an idea how it could be

KR> KR-1 Corvair...

2015-01-20 Thread John Edwards
Does anyone know of a KR-1/Corvair that has flown?

I have a KR-1/VW1835cc that I fly as my daily flyer.

I am considering upgrading to a Corvair 3000cc since this is the
lightest version in the Corvair line.
Has anyone flown a KR-1/Corvair combo?

KR> Weight And ballance

2015-01-20 Thread tommy waymack
Weight and balance CG,center of gravity, is a sum of the moments[arm x
weight]of each piece divided by the sum of the weight of each piece
measured from a common datum point. The arm being measured from a common
datum point. This is how I computed radio changes in aircraft.Measure the
component distance from the datum, multiply that with the weight of the
component. This becomes the moment for the component.Add the moments to all
components and divide the sum of the weights of all components=CG.Aft of
the datum is positive and forward of the datum is negative. The datum point
can be any point the designer wants.I believe Ken used the aft face of the
main spar.Any thing I say may be wrong.Works for me.Tommy W.

KR> Weight And ballance

2015-01-20 Thread jon kimmel
Weight and balance is simply a summation of weights and moments. If you
know the weight and centroid of the wings then you can certainly do a good
calculation without them. On the e-3 they often do the final weighing
without seats, paint, and other things. Those are added back later.

KR> This morning's flight

2015-01-20 Thread Jeff Scott
Had a nice flight this morning to breakfast in Pagosa Springs, CO roughly 100
nm north from Los Alamos. Flew there along with a 200 hp RV-8, a 180 hp RV-7,
a 160 HP RV-6, a Cirrus SR-20 and a Tri-Pacer. By comparison, my O-200 powered
KR is a couple of knots faster than the Cirrus SR-20, seems to fly dead even
with the 160 HP RV-6, is just a few knots (7 - 10) slower than the 180 HP RV-7,
and gets badly smoked by the 200 hp RV-8. The Tri-Pacer got a 10 - 15 minute
head start for a 100 mile trip and arrived in the pattern at the same time as
the KR both ways. This was cruising there at 10,500' and home at 11,500'.
Beautiful flight in the snowy mountains today.

This weekend I swapped out the standard 100W aircraft landing lights for a pair
of 11W LED landing lights from SuperBright LEDs.com. These LED lights were
made specifically as drop in replacements for the 100W Aircraft Landing lights,
so no modifications were needed. Cost was $20 per light with $10 shipping.
