Also, see http://www.n56ml.com/kcf.html if you haven't already. It will
probably answer a lot of your Dragonfly canopy questions...

I made the canopy frame before I made either front or aft deck, just so
I could get that transition from canopy to those decks seamless looking,
and I think I succeeded nicely (see the two photos at the bottom of
http://www.n56ml.com/ ).

Jim Hill put a Dragonfly canopy on his otherwise stock shaped KR2, and
there are some photos of it at the top of
http://www.n56ml.com/jhill.html that show one way to put a Dragonfly
canopy on a KR2. It looks like he cut it back significantly to fit his
plane, and I'm not sure if this is a stock aft deck or not, but knowing
him, it was probably scratch built. I think Jim was either the first or
one of the first to put a Dragonfly canopy on a KR2. The sides actually
curve in a bit at the bottom, and gives excellent visibility when
compared to the KR2 bubble canopy.

I'd recommend SkySmith out of Iowa. csr at skysmith.com . I've been
with them since 1998 and excellent customer service. Scott gives
insurance seminars at Oshkosh. They will shop multiple companies
and let you select. You may have to drop the "hull", both motion and
non-motion, to get a reasonable rate and go with liability only to
get a reasonable rate. That means if you ding the bird it's on you
to repair. Except for materials that's what you'd do anyway. An
experimental with other than an "aircraft" engine is hard to
insure. Much will depend on your personal qualifications, i.e.,
total time, time in type, taildragger?, recent time, etc..

My liability only is $325 per year but don't expect anyway near that
for starters, if they will even insure you. You may have to go
"naked" if you're comfortable with that. Just don't taxi into any
Lear jets on the ramp or land on anyones house. :-(

Getting serious...

Is there any consensuses regarding a preferred insurance carrier and
cost? I know this can be highly variable but I'm looking for some
guideline.

I received one quote for a KR1, liability and hull coverage nearly twice
the cost I had on my RV7. (over $3k) What's with that?

2016-10-07 Thread Jeff Scott
Matt,

I guess I don't see the problem either unless you are trying to use a Dragon
Fly canopy with a stock KR-2 canopy frame. I have a dragonfly canopy in the
-2S frame on my plane built to the stock width. I used the forward part of the
canopy, but could have (and maybe should have) used a bit more aft section of
the canopy to provide a little better head room. If you are trying to use a
stock KR-2 canopy frame, then that might be a bit of a problem.

Well, I?m having some trouble with the canopy now. I?m using a standard
Dragonfly canopy, and I have a stock width kr2. Bend the sides in, looks great.
Headroom, forward visibility, blends well with the back deck? whoops. the curve
from front to back lessens, to the point where I can only pick *two* of those
three. I?ve enclosed a picture that demonstrates the difference between the
Dragonfly at normal width and at the width I?m working with. Any of you guys
that used Dragonfly canopies, can you please tell me how you made it work? I?m
at a loss.
