KR> FW: Landing gear parts
Guys, the price is $500, plus shipping from the Cincinnati area. Further complicating the deal is they will go in the moving van on their way to Texas this Saturday. If you are serious about the deal, we need to work it out on the phone, soon. The packers are here today and tomorrow and I am way too busy to be shipping airplane parts. Local pick up or ship next week from Austin TX area. KR> FW: Landing gear parts
As some of you know, I have tried to part out N774A since it was destroyed a couple years ago. I'm going to load it all in a moving van next Saturday to our new home in Georgetown Texas. If anyone is interested in a complete Diehl, tri gear set, from the spar, and firewall, to the ground, I think a deal could be made. The nose gear was damaged in the "very hard landing". The strut was broken and the firewall bracket was bent. I'm pretty sure a decent welder can repair the bracket but of course, the strut needs to be replaced. The gear is complete with wheels, tires, tubes, axles, hydraulic disk brakes and master cylinders (Great Plaines). I'm looking for something well below half of retail. Rob, I have not seen the NTSB report. Vapor lock came from the FAA. If you look at the picture of the firewall prior to the crash, with oil all over it, you will see that I did not have a heat shield on the gascolator. I'm thinking that the increased airflow, after takeoff, may have moved more hot air to that area, as I hoped, on its way out of the cowl. Even with lots of taxi and static running, I never had any overheating. Apparently putting more heat in that area did the trick. Hard to believe and probably not true, but it works for me. It was a nice day. Not particularly hot because we had had a lot of rain. The engine had been run several times in warmer temps. > -Original Message- > From: KRnet [mailto:krnet-bounces at list.krnet.org] On Behalf Of > Robert7721 at aol.com > Sent: Sunday, August 04, 2013 8:12 PM > To: krnet at list.krnet.org > Subject: Re: KR> One less KR - N774A > > Brad, > > Sorry for your loss, glad to hear the pilot is fully recovered. Some of you know that the KR I started in 1974, resurrected on 2005, and expected to fly to Mt Vernon this year, was destroyed on its first "official" test . I have several pictures and some comments on the integrity of the design, at http://www.krnet.org/krs/bankerstar/. I expect to attend the gathering again this year, by car. I need at least one more to wean myself from the KR dream. I expect to have several metal parts for sale when I get there. All of them are visible in at least one of the pictures. Dave, I recently completed a conversion to tri gear and used 5/8" axles from Great Plains (http://www.greatplainsas.com/scaxles.html). No where near $158. KR> Purchased a KR-2, want to change the landing gear config....
I recently completed a retract to tri gear conversion after a hard landing on N774A. Mine was upside down for several months. I know a local builder who has decided to do exactly what you are contemplating. Mains have been reversed. He does not have the nose gear yet. Email off line at ankerst...@embarqmail.com or call my cell (513 313-9265) if you'd like to pursue our experience. Brad Ankerstar SW Ohio, N774A I know that some aircraft can be converted by simply 'flipping around' the main gear so that it angles backwards and is mounted to the back of the spar, and then adding a nose wheel - is this a workable concept with the KR (keep the stock mains but flip/reverse-mount, and add the Diehl nosewheel), or do I need to buy new mains as well?

Pat, I may be able to help. I have converted N774A to tricycle gear and I gave the original gear (1974) to a friend. KR> Dremel model 400XPR
Dremel owners, I had a very positive experience with my model 400XPR. It quit turning on a few months ago so I started using my back up. When I decided to try to fix it I opened it up and decided it exceeded my skill level. So I called customer service. (1-800-437-3635) They asked if I had had it less than 5 years. I didn't have the receipt, but I thought it had been less than 5 years. I was told to send it to their service department in Racine WI, along with a note with my address and phone number, explanation of the problem, and a statement that I had had it less that 5 years. They would either fix it or replace it. I sent it in on 3 September and got a new model 4000 in the mail on 9 September. They also sent a small sanding wheel and a nice letter, for my inconvenience. I suspect that someone out there has a similar problem. If you do, give them a call. They made me a happy camper. Brad Ankerstar

KR> N774A damage report
On 14 April at 2:10 pm, N774A hit the ground at about 75 mph after I realized it was falling out of the sky. I had flown a reasonably decent pattern and was headed right for the numbers but the airspeed read 80. As I applied power to arrest the sink, I hit the ground and bounced. When I hit again, the gear collapsed and I became a sled. Stayed on the runway and, even though everything that wasn't fastened down flew all over the cockpit, I was not injured. The prop, of course, is kindling. The cowl was scuffed up slightly, the belly from the main spar forward was also significantly scuffed, and the firewall came loose on the top and sides. The fuel tank front mount kept the firewall on the plane. The landing gear was essentially undamaged. It did not collapse, as in -- retract. What happened was that all 8 of the nuts on the gear leg attach bolds were stripped off. That allowed the gear legs to fold sideways up into the wing which prevented a second bounce. Of course, the top skin on each wing was pierced on both sides of the main spar. If I was so inclined, I could bolt the gear legs back to the spring, replace a tire that got scuffed, and get on with the wood and glass repairs. However, I am not so inclined so I am now in the market for a set of Diehl tricycle gear, plus wheels and brakes, and a prop. A project, on the gear might be interesting. If anyone has something you think I could use, please contact me off the net at ankerst...@embarqmail.com. For the record, N774A is a single place KR 2 with a 1835 cc VW. (ran good but the revflow carb is too big) It had a Hegy 52x44 prop which was at 34-3600 rpm for the whole flight. Empty weight is 587 lbs and gross is 950. I remember speeds from 65 to 135 while I orbited HAO for about 40 minutes, trying to find the courage to try to get down. Remember, I was doing taxi tests and was no where near ready to fly --- obviously. I pretty much wasted all that time being very gentle trying to keep it in the sky when I should have been doing some actual test flying. Anyway, back to work again. I have long thought, and now I'm convinced, that these are sturdy little birds. With a couple miracles, we will be at the next gathering. Without miracles, I'll drive. Therefore, you may reach max engine rpm of 3200 with partial throttle, but the mixture may be rich. Trying to tune a 34mm carb to the 1835cc engine will not be easy. ." KR> Alaskan KR
I was in Alaska in May and I called Fred. He said he was pretty much out of homebuilding these days and involved with some sort of community services. I had met him on a military visit to Anchorage in about '74 and he showed me his KR 1. It was parked under a DC 3 at the Anchorage airport. Brad Ankerstar N84BA

KR> Rand to Diehl engine mount adapter
I have a Rand engine mount that bolts to a VW and allows only 7 inches behind the engine. I now have a Diehl accessory case with the appropriate stuff. I know I can mount it between the engine and the Rand mount using the inner holes. I would rather not, and I'd like to get another 2 inches for Mag clearance. Has anyone heard of an adapter/extension being commercially available? Brad Ankerstar KR 2 N84BA
KR> Home again
"I swear that plane will log more trailer time than any plane out there." I don't think you are close. Mine has been from Colton. CA to Andrews AFB, MD to Waverly, IA to Solon, IA to Lebanon, OH. That's in the neighborhood of 4500 miles. Only one more trailer trip planned. That will be to the Butler County Airport sometime this year, I hope. Of course it will have to come home after testing for mods and paint but that's only about 15 miles, and you stop counting after the first flight. I think. KR2r N84BA
