KR> switch labeling

2016-08-20 Thread Craig Williams
Good that's exactly my thinking. Many crashes have been caused by confusion or
just BAD design (John Denver fuel selector). I know whats what in my plane but
the next poor SAP should not have to figure it out in an emergency. By the way
I will use that switch to prime and start the engine and then it gets turned
off.

KR> switch labeling

2016-08-20 Thread Craig Williams
Ok, so I have my fuel system installed and I am wiring the pumps. They will
have voltage all the time and the ground will be selected to each pump as it is
selected with a spdt switch. That switch is labeled "pump 1 and pump 2". That
ground comes from my 5psi oil switch. So that the pump selected will only run
when the engine is running and producing oil pressure. My second switch is to
bypass all that and provide a ground to run the pumps when priming and starting
and if the oil pressure switch was to fail. How would you label that switch?

pump bypass
emergency pump
fuel pump on
ground use only
pump bkup power

KR> Facet pumps in series

Question

Can you plumb 2 facet pumps in series and will each run the engine if the other
fails. I have been trying to plumb them in parallel but its a real pain to get
the tubing all bent correctly. Series would be much easier. It looks like
the Zenith 601 was doing it at one time. Not sure they still are.

yellow-tagged cylinders, new prop, just the prettiest little gem of a plane. I
would love to buy the plane, install WAFs, and fly off the test time (yes, SAC
has been issued!), but the little monster is a single seater, and test-flying
is not my cup of tea, and I think I'll finish my Osprey2 and call it good. The

Maybe we should have a "Young Builders" program for passing on our projects.
When I "dreamed" of owning a plane I watched hundreds of tri-pacers rotting in

remember the theme that EAA used in the 80's: "the dream of flight" and I
always thought how ironic it was...so much of the work going into those dreams
was unrealistic and wasted. The safest (and cheapest) way to get airborne was
to rent. If you wanted adventure, Matias Rust landed a 172 in Red Square...beat
that Burt Rutan! Giving (donating) your dream to the next generation is a

KR> WHY? ALUMINUM WAFS?

2013-10-29 Thread Craig Williams
Why use aluminum or SS when the WAFs are easy to make from the right stuff??
ACS sells the 4130 in the right size so all you have to do is cut to length,
drill some holes and shape.?? I've seen them sell for big $$ and never
understood why except maybe folks want to save a little time.

KR> Spot welding aluminum tank

2013-10-27 Thread Craig Williams
So I'm sitting around dreaming of flying my plane someday and contemplating my
stub wing tanks.? The outer wing tanks are welded aluminum and that was fine
but a bit pricey.? My mains are .032 aluminum sheet and I got to thinking how
hard it was going to be to weld such thin sheet.? Poking around the internet I
found that in fact you can spot weld thin aluminum sheet (see video) and as
luck would have it I have a new 220V spot welder sitting on the shelf.? My plan
is to use this technique to spot weld my tanks together and seal the seams with
Pro-Seal.? Anyone heard of spot welding fuel tanks or aircraft skins?

None of us have all the answers but we are all interested and talking with
everyone in the forums was fun. Generally the KR has evolved and still is
because builders have features they desire. When KR

aircraft changed from the way Ken had it and the way the KR2S is now a
drastically different airplane. The faster and more powerful KR2S has developed
stability and necessary belly board/flap aerodynamic controls that are safety
of flight issues. We talk and listen and listen to what others have built and
what others want. The new builders want and get projects then desire features
that have out grown what they have or invested time building only to discover
they need major changes for safety , mainly empenage tail surface enlargement,
higher gross weight and they CG range issue that needs to be edited in the
plans.? To suggest to the KR community that New plans be drawn up on Auto Cad
that contain popular features beyond what the KR2S has and that what the KR
community has R would certainly be entertaining to new builders. The
facilitating KR1,KR2, KR2S, etc.plans with realistic advertising specifications
for each to enable builders a closer design
end product choice is a goal to keep the KR alive. Neophyte builders who are
not kit builders and like the KR designs are protected in the builder/designer
designation rather than kit builder designation. Protection as Experimental
category is valuable for ELSA pilots designating what the performance numbers
of their peculiar design is rather than what a "KIT" is regulated by the
manufacture publishes. Would multiple basic builder plans be practical?

KR> Opinion on O-290...LONG post

2012-01-06 Thread Craig Williams
I thought about both the O-290 and O-235 engines but finally have settled on
the O-200.

It's
been said here that some of the fastest KR's are running the O-200.  I
am in the process of switching from the Corvair.  So, I have been doing
alot of research on the O-200 mods.  Here a little of what I have found:

There are some fairly economical mods
which can yield tangible benefits.  First, up the compression ratio.
The standard CR is 7.8:1 and upping it to 9.5:1 is a quick and easy mod.
LyCon sells NFS pistons for about $800 set, http://www.lycon.com/
.  Klaus at Lightspeed also sells pistons, http://www.lightspeedengineering.com/
.  A slightly less expensive piston mod is to use a C85 piston in the
O200.  The C85 piston has a bit more crown than the 0200 and your can pick
up and easy 8-10 hp.

Balancing the crank, rods and pistons is a good
mod, but expect to pay about $1000- $1500 for this service.  Balancing, in
effect, lets the crank spin easier with less resultant stress and helps
preserve the bearings.

Bumping the ignition timing from 28 to 30-32
degrees is also good for a couple of easy horsepower.  When setting up the
mags, the internal cam may need to be profiled to ensure that the spark is
symmetrical from lobe to lobe.  The Slick mags usually have a "cam
spread" of a few degrees.  For example the mag is set t fire at 28
degrees on cylinder #1, but when the crank is turned to fire the next cylinder,
the timing may be at 25 or 33 due to the unequal lift of the cam.  Sanding
the Slick cam to make it lift evenly will really smooth out the engine.
An aftermarket electronic ignition, like Klaus' at Lightspeed will yield some
benefits at altitude.

The O-200 35 deg stock cam actually works pretty well up
through 3200 rpm, but will definitely need to be re-indexed above 3400
rpm.  There are probably some exotic cams available, but, given the
relative bang for buck ratio, it is hard to beat a stock cam.  I think
that the C90 cam has a slightly different profile which may give a bit more
torque.  There is a slight difference between an original 1940's C90 cam
and the O200 cam.  I think that TCM may now sell the O200 cam as a
replacement for the C90.  At one point in the past, the C90 was optimized
to drive a wood prop, and due to the thickness of the prop, a bit more torque
was required.

The C-90 and 0-200 both are.410"lift cams.
The C-90 is 245 degree duration on both Intake and Exhaust with a 24 degree
overlap.
The 0-200 is 259 degree duration on both Intake and Exhaust with a 35 degree
overlap.
The C-90 cam will produce it's peak torque at a lower rpm due to it's shorter
duration and overlap.
The 0-200 cam will produce more power up top.

Use a 4 into 4 exhaust.  See Jeff Scotts page:
http://jscott.comlu.com/KR/exhaust.html

It seems to me the O-200 done right is a 100Hp engine and perfect fit for the
KR2S.

My plan is to use the O-200 and do the following mods to get a solid 100Hp.

C-85 pistons, crank balance, vac pump removal, Ellison EFS-3A TBI, timing
advance, custom exhaust.

The final mod might be a dry nitrous system to add 10% additional power on
takeoff.  I really am intrigued by possible effects of a mild nitrous boost.

What are your opinions on using an O-290-D Lycoming for the KR2-S?

Start researching 16 channel analog data loggers and you'll see why they get
$1000 for a custom one.  By time you get something generic, write a program for
it (assuming they give you something to do that and you don't have to buy and
learn LabView or VB), tweak it do do what you want.  You'll quickly appreciated
what they have done for you.  A complete custom aircraft engine management

KR> My flying story -also not KR

2011-12-20 Thread Craig Williams
I hate to air my dirty laundry...but here goes.  Ok let me set the scene for
you.  Student pilot, 25 hrs TT, been taking lessons @ Keesler AFB in Miss, move
to Dover AFB in Del and now flying from Smyrna Apt a grass strip in Oct '84.
So anyway I take off after my new instructor checks me out for solo again.  Fat
dumb and happy and overly confident as many students are I take to the air.
Cold air that is, probably 45-50 degrees that day.  So, I am doing pattern work
because grass is a new thing for me after spending all that time on the paved
AF runway in the south where I had not seen a temperature below 75 degrees.  I
am on final to RWY 9 having successfully dodged the water tower on base, glide
path seems a bit low but that's no problem.  Back at Keesler we had that big
500' overrun with a nice cushion of hot air to flare in.  So in my mind I am
thinking just flare and float and wait and it will all work out.  So I flare
100 feet short and
immediately settle into the newly cut corn field.  Damn!  Not what I expected
and it got bumpy quick but that was not the worst of it.  Coming up fast was
the last furrow of the field and it was probably 12 inches higher than the
grass runway.  So all I could do was haul back on the yoke and hope it would
pop over the furrow...  It worked... I taxied in to the parking spot,  shut her
down, and promptly told my instructor what had happened.  I pretty much had
figured out what happened at this point but we talked about it and he asked if
I needed more dual and I declined.  Live and Learn

If you were to keep the AREA of the wing the same, what effect does the wing
length Vs width make? AND- then what does the wing area vs overall length of
the aircraft make?
I was just comparing the dimensions of the KR2S to the P-51D Mustang and
there is a GREAT big difference, especially in the wingspan vs overall
fuselage length ratios. In other words, has anyone tried to make a KR into a
P51? >:-)
That's where my thinking is headed. KRP-51? lol

Subject: Re: KR> Spring trim system

Sorry, but anything I would write about how to improve the Sonex system would
be purely speculation.  Having invested a lot of time playing with spring type
trim systems, my recommendation is to keep life simple and use a tried and true
positive trim system.  A Ray Allen servo actuated trim tab is about as positive
of a trim as you are going to get.  I had the Mac (now Ray Allen) trim servo on
my plane and removed it in favor of a spring system when I built the larger
tail.  I consider the change in trim to be a failed experiment.  I plan to cut
a trim tab into my tail and mount the Mac servo into the tail to operate the
tab next time I get a notion to do major surgery on the plane.  My spring trim
system is going to come off the plane and go in the trash.

The problem with using springs to trim the plane is that the control forces
change significantly with speed.  The KR has a huge speed range, which you can
also interpret to read, the KR had a huge range of stick forces, from very
light to moderately heavy depending on the speed.  The force exerted by a
spring is constant.  So, with any change in speed, the air loads on the tail
change, and the amount of force being exerted by the spring is suddenly
incorrect, so the plane is out of trim.  I discovered this very quickly with
the system I currently have in my KR.  The Sonex displays the same issue, but
has stronger springs, so can actually be trimmed for a given speed in smooth
air, but is also easily upset causign it to diverge either nose up or nose
down, so you spend a whole lot of time cranking on the trim handle without ever
really getting it right.

The Tomahawk I used to own had the most effective of the spring trim systems,
but the springs were HUGE (and heavy).  There were 4 springs in the aft
fuselage that stretched darned near the length of the empinage, with two
springs pulling nose up and two springs pulling nose down.  Trim was
accomplished by the trim wheel pulling more or less tension on the nose up
spring pair.   Some Tomahawk owners complained about running out of nose up
trim as the springs got old.  Breaking a trim spring in flight made for a real
strong armed struggle to get the plane on the ground.   Even at that, the trim
was nowhere near as stabile or effective as the simple trim tab that was
mounted on the nearly identical Beech Skipper I was also flying.

That means if you buy plans or even a complete Sonex, you have to register

Hello all,

I am considering the purchase of a set of plans for the KR-2S but before
committing, I wanted to get a look at a construction manual.  Recently I got a
crack at just that: a KR-1 manual and plan-set from Rand Robinson Engineering
which looked like they were from the early 70's seemed abysmally short on
details.  FYI, the plans number was KR-1 # 6215.  The vagueness of this
document set was a bit discouraging, leaving me with a definite sense of
disconnect between the pretty pictures I had before me and my vision of the
detailed drawings and written instruction I feel I will need to get through
this project.

Now that the material comes from NVAero and multiple decades have passed,
can I assume the level of detailed information and quality of the direction in
the manual has evolved (improved)?

KR> Hello to all!

2011-11-21 Thread Craig Williams
Welcome Barrett

In reading your introduction I thought I was reading something I wrote.  Your
situation is very similar to mine and a few others here.  You'll find this list
and the Corvair list very helpful and ...well I  don't want to spoil it for
you.  Good Luck and I hope you and I both are in the 10% that finish their
projects.

My name is Barrett Flowers and I'm the newest newbie to the list. Though I
am now retired, my background is Industrial Maintenance Technology. I've
been looking at a lot of different homebuilt aircraft and have finally
decided on the KR2S, with modifications and the Corvair engine. I'm still in
the very early planning stages and taking notes. I'll try to not ask any
stupid questions, but you can bet I will from time to time. I think my one
big challenge will be to reverse my mind set of industry in that anything
worth building is worth over-building. I've never tried to put my mind on a
weight diet, so that is something I am going to have to learn.
I currently hunt meteorites when I have the time and inclination, and the
rest of the time is taken up with riding my newest Harley- a FLTRU 2011 Road
Glide Ultra 103, a truly great road bike if there ever was one.
I have a 30'x40' workshop with 11' ceilings in it that I will be building
the KR in, and have most every tool that I need.I hope (an so does my wife).
If- up death, the guy with the most tools wins.well- I'll make a good
showing of it.
I started flying in my late teens and early 20's. Got married, kids work and
Corvettes took up all my time and "flying money", so I've not flown since
then- but I will never forget the experiences that I did have back then, and
can't wait to do it again. Unfortunately- the only way I can get back into
flying and afford it is to build and maintain it myself, so that's what I am
getting ready to do. At least now I have the time, if nothing else.
Anyway- I'll sit back and lurk and learn and try not to be too big of pain
in the ass in the meantime. When I do start the build, I'll document it
online and eagerly seek advice, especially from some of you more inclined to
engineering and numbers as that is my main weak spot.
Thanks for having my on the list and I'll try to do what I can to be a
productive member! :-)

BTW- Are there any list members out there from the Salt Lake City area?

I have a stock KR and will be attempting to do the wing skins soon. I have
already modified the spar to the 4-15/16" at the outboard end. I purchased the
skins and ribs from a builder a lot of years ago and the ribs were already cut
from the sheet.
However how do i verify that the ribs are correct and as accurate as they need
to be? What is the spacing for the ribs?  and i need some information on the
spar extension.
I would be willing to help anyone that is getting ready to do this in my

I am in SW MO.

2011-10-20 Thread Craig Williams
This is the antenna I am building:

http://www.davemorris.com/dave/MorrisDFLoop.html

"it occurred to the author that
a full wavelength loop antenna would fit perfectly inside a
Dragonfly, Q-2, or other aircraft having a non-metal tail
cone of approximately 31 inches diameter, and that such an
antenna could provide all the advantages for which loop
antennas are well known."

Interesting read and a better antenna that can be removed and repaired easily
if needed.

Hi everyone,

does anyone recommend a good POT OHM/K value for use as a dimmer? I got a
10k one and well I have to go to the very end to get it to go on and I have
very little room (very fine turn) to dimm while I have 75% of the turn that
does nothing.

Was trying to remember my electronics information, I think it's the higher
the resistance the more adjustment I will get so if 10k isn't enough maybe
20-30k?

Though I could be wrong, granted they seem to have started out at 10k on the
store I got it from.

I have discovered the Hoerner wing tips.  Anyone using them?  Seems like I can
use them to add area without actually increasing the wingspan.  I also found an

wingtips that I want to use too.  Can't seem to find the guy who currently owns

KR> KR crash thoughts

2011-10-09 Thread Craig Williams
All

As a buyer of a pre-built boat stage KR2S I have thought about these things
too.  But I have taken the path of mitigating the risk with whatever steps are
needed (both plane and pilot)before I fly it.  I don't know what happened with
the accident and the pilot may have done everything he felt he could to reduce
the risk of failure to include using the Internet as a source of information.
If he did then you can say it was just his time and we don't get to chose that
time.  If not, then he took a risk he did not need to take, but chose to take,
and he lost.  I hope to learn something from this tragedy and may Mr Berry RIP.

Guys,I am totally confused. I thought that the thermal couples that i received
from GRT (i.e. exhaust and head temp) were premade with ends installed - They
are not to be cut or modified in any way. The kit includes extra terminals to
cut and terminate the wires from the instrument to the correct install length
and then connect to the thermal couple wire. Why are we talking about
terminating the thermal couple wires, What did i miss?Joe Horton,Coopersburg,

Soldering does not create a dissimilar metal connection as such, but
creates an alloy at the junction of the two metals, which provides a
reliable conductive path. I have a hard time believing that the
calibration error introduced by this junction would be anywhere near
the  error introduced by the galvanometer (meter movement) it is
normally displayed on (considering that there are solder joints along
the meter path INSIDE the unit). What is the accuracy of the
thermocouple itself, 2-5%? Perhaps less accurate?

The GRT thermocouple wires are iron and constantan.  There are no
terminations on the wires.  Solder does not stick to well on them and even
if you did solder the pins, you create a dissimilar metal joint that messes
with the thermocouple calibration.  With a little luck you can also create a
corrosion problem at the pins, not pretty.
I went to the Omega Instruments site.  This is a large outfit that
specializes in industrial instrumentation, especially thermocouples.  All of
their connections for thermocouple wires use tin coated screw-type clamps.
One page even has step by step how to.  If it works for Omega, I could copy
their system.  I found a European style barrier strip at Radio Shack that
has tin coated screw contacts for bare wire connection.  These barrier
strips have electrical isolation and are made for high vibration
