Good that's exactly my thinking. Many crashes have been caused by confusion or just BAD design (John Denver fuel selector). Ok, so I have my fuel system installed and I am wiring the pumps. They will have voltage all the time and the ground will be selected to each pump as it is selected with a spdt switch. That switch is labeled "pump 1 and pump 2". That ground comes from my 5psi oil switch. So that the pump selected will only run when the engine is running and producing oil pressure. My second switch is to bypass all that and provide a ground to run the pumps when priming and starting and if the oil pressure switch was to fail. How would you label that switch? pump bypass emergency pump fuel pump on ground use only pump bkup power Thanks Craig

KR> Opinion on O-290...LONG post
I thought about both the O-290 and O-235 engines but finally have settled on the O-200. It's been said here that some of the fastest KR's are running the O-200. I am in the process of switching from the Corvair. So, I have been doing alot of research on the O-200 mods. Here a little of what I have found: There are some fairly economical mods which can yield tangible benefits. First, up the compression ratio. The standard CR is 7.8:1 and upping it to 9.5:1 is a quick and easy mod. LyCon sells NFS pistons for about $800 set, http://www.lycon.com/ . Klaus at Lightspeed also sells pistons, http://www.lightspeedengineering.com/ . A slightly less expensive piston mod is to use a C85 piston in the O200. The C85 piston has a bit more crown than the 0200 and your can pick up and easy 8-10 hp. Balancing the crank, rods and pistons is a good mod, but expect to pay about $1000- $1500 for this service. Balancing, in effect, lets the crank spin easier with less resultant stress and helps preserve the bearings. Bumping the ignition timing from 28 to 30-32 degrees is also good for a couple of easy horsepower. When setting up the mags, the internal cam may need to be profiled to ensure that the spark is symmetrical from lobe to lobe. The Slick mags usually have a "cam spread" of a few degrees. For example the mag is set t fire at 28 degrees on cylinder #1, but when the crank is turned to fire the next cylinder, the timing may be at 25 or 33 due to the unequal lift of the cam. Sanding the Slick cam to make it lift evenly will really smooth out the engine. An aftermarket electronic ignition, like Klaus' at Lightspeed will yield some benefits at altitude. The O-200 35 deg stock cam actually works pretty well up through 3200 rpm, but will definitely need to be re-indexed above 3400 rpm. There are probably some exotic cams available, but, given the relative bang for buck ratio, it is hard to beat a stock cam. I think that the C90 cam has a slightly different profile which may give a bit more torque. There is a slight difference between an original 1940's C90 cam and the O200 cam. I think that TCM may now sell the O200 cam as a replacement for the C90. At one point in the past, the C90 was optimized to drive a wood prop, and due to the thickness of the prop, a bit more torque was required. The C-90 and 0-200 both are.410"lift cams. The C-90 is 245 degree duration on both Intake and Exhaust with a 24 degree overlap. The 0-200 is 259 degree duration on both Intake and Exhaust with a 35 degree overlap. The C-90 cam will produce it's peak torque at a lower rpm due to it's shorter duration and overlap. The 0-200 cam will produce more power up top. Use a 4 into 4 exhaust. See Jeff Scotts page: http://jscott.comlu.com/KR/exhaust.html It seems to me the O-200 done right is a 100Hp engine and perfect fit for the KR2S. My plan is to use the O-200 and do the following mods to get a solid 100Hp. C-85 pistons, crank balance, vac pump removal, Ellison EFS-3A TBI, timing advance, custom exhaust. The final mod might be a dry nitrous system to add 10% additional power on takeoff. I really am intrigued by possible effects of a mild nitrous boost. Start researching 16 channel analog data loggers and you'll see why they get $1000 for a custom one. By time you get something generic, write a program for it (assuming they give you something to do that and you don't have to buy and learn LabView or VB), tweak it do do what you want. You'll quickly appreciated what they have done for you. A complete custom aircraft engine management system for $2000 or even $3000 is a deal in my opinion. Cold air that is, probably 45-50 degrees that day. So, I am doing pattern work because grass is a new thing for me after spending all that time on the paved AF runway in the south where I had not seen a temperature below 75 degrees. I am on final to RWY 9 having successfully dodged the water tower on base, glide path seems a bit low but that's no problem. Back at Keesler we had that big 500' overrun with a nice cushion of hot air to flare in. So in my mind I am thinking just flare and float and wait and it will all work out. So I flare 100 feet short and immediately settle into the newly cut corn field. Damn! Not what I expected and it got bumpy quick but that was not the worst of it. Coming up fast was the last furrow of the field and it was probably 12 inches higher than the grass runway. So all I could do was haul back on the yoke and hope it would pop over the furrow... It worked... I taxied in to the parking spot, shut her down, and promptly told my instructor what had happened. I pretty much had figured out what happened at this point but we talked about it and he asked if I needed more dual and I declined. Live and Learn

KR> Spring trim system
FYI for the list Thanks again Jeff, yes I have abandoned the idea and will use a tab. Craig From: Jeff Scott <jscott.pla...@gmx.com> To: Craig Williams <kr2seaf...@yahoo.com> Sent: Monday, December 12, 2011 2:34 PM Subject: Re: KR> Spring trim system Sorry, but anything I would write about how to improve the Sonex system would be purely speculation. Having invested a lot of time playing with spring type trim systems, my recommendation is to keep life simple and use a tried and true positive trim system. A Ray Allen servo actuated trim tab is about as positive of a trim as you are going to get. I had the Mac (now Ray Allen) trim servo on my plane and removed it in favor of a spring system when I built the larger tail. I consider the change in trim to be a failed experiment. I plan to cut a trim tab into my tail and mount the Mac servo into the tail to operate the tab next time I get a notion to do major surgery on the plane. My spring trim system is going to come off the plane and go in the trash. The problem with using springs to trim the plane is that the control forces change significantly with speed. The KR has a huge speed range, which you can also interpret to read, the KR had a huge range of stick forces, from very light to moderately heavy depending on the speed. The force exerted by a spring is constant. So, with any change in speed, the air loads on the tail change, and the amount of force being exerted by the spring is suddenly incorrect, so the plane is out of trim. I discovered this very quickly with the system I currently have in my KR. The Sonex displays the same issue, but has stronger springs, so can actually be trimmed for a given speed in smooth air, but is also easily upset causign it to diverge either nose up or nose down, so you spend a whole lot of time cranking on the trim handle without ever really getting it right. The Tomahawk I used to own had the most effective of the spring trim systems, but the springs were HUGE (and heavy). There were 4 springs in the aft fuselage that stretched darned near the length of the empinage, with two springs pulling nose up and two springs pulling nose down. Trim was accomplished by the trim wheel pulling more or less tension on the nose up spring pair. Some Tomahawk owners complained about running out of nose up trim as the springs got old. Breaking a trim spring in flight made for a real strong armed struggle to get the plane on the ground. Even at that, the trim was nowhere near as stabile or effective as the simple trim tab that was mounted on the nearly identical Beech Skipper I was also flying. -Jeff - Original Message ----- >From: Craig Williams >Sent: 12/11/11 03:27 PM >To: Jeff Scott >Subject: Re: KR> Spring trim system > >Great analysis Jeff. Though I am now retired, my background is Industrial Maintenance Technology. I've been looking at a lot of different homebuilt aircraft and have finally decided on the KR2S, with modifications and the Corvair engine. I'm still in the very early planning stages and taking notes. I'll try to not ask any stupid questions, but you can bet I will from time to time. I think my one big challenge will be to reverse my mind set of industry in that anything worth building is worth over-building. I've never tried to put my mind on a weight diet, so that is something I am going to have to learn. I currently hunt meteorites when I have the time and inclination, and the rest of the time is taken up with riding my newest Harley- a FLTRU 2011 Road Glide Ultra 103, a truly great road bike if there ever was one. I have a 30'x40' workshop with 11' ceilings in it that I will be building the KR in, and have most every tool that I need.I hope (an so does my wife). If- up death, the guy with the most tools wins.well- I'll make a good showing of it. I started flying in my late teens and early 20's. Got married, kids work and Corvettes took up all my time and "flying money", so I've not flown since then- but I will never forget the experiences that I did have back then, and can't wait to do it again. Unfortunately- the only way I can get back into flying and afford it is to build and maintain it myself, so that's what I am getting ready to do. At least now I have the time, if nothing else. Anyway- I'll sit back and lurk and learn and try not to be too big of pain in the ass in the meantime. When I do start the build, I'll document it online and eagerly seek advice, especially from some of you more inclined to engineering and numbers as that is my main weak spot. Thanks for having my on the list and I'll try to do what I can to be a productive member! :-) BTW- Are there any list members out there from the Salt Lake City area?
