Hi All. My KR2S project has been sold to a guy living 2 suburbs away. Dean Cooper decided he wanted to re-enter the KR scene after selling his project many years ago. He is known to a number of the Aussie KR guys and has been reacquainting himself with long lost friends. My partner Marcelle, and I started a new business, Bikram Yoga Bayside www.bikramyogabayside.com.au , which has been going great guns for us since we opened in April 2010. Unlike any 9-5 job, being a business owner is all consuming. Aside from being the front person behind the desk, I also play the roles of business planner, marketing manager, secretary, statistician, webmaster, cleaner, builder, liaison officer, accountant, contract negotiator, warehouse manager, treasurer, HR manager to 9 staff, and then there are those damned government quarterly Business Activity Statements! Needless to say our business is a spare time vacuum...and I still work a 9-5 job! Work on the KR came to a halt at the start of last year when we found a suitable commercial premises and council planning submissions began. I can not see any spare time in sight as we plan to expand the business further, which includes me heading to the US for 9 weeks in a couple of months and we wish to avoid tying ourselves up with bank financing to fund the expansion. I am certainly remaining a member of KRNet and will be keeping in touch with my KR mates on and off the Internet. I will also keep my web site up and running as I know there are people out there who enjoy its content. KR> Canopy Gluing- Epoxy
Hi Phil. With my Zenith canopy I used the epoxy resin, some flox and carbon fiber. I scuffed a 1" band on both sides of the edges and drilled holes at regular intervals which were used to clamp the canopy into position while everything dried. http://www.kr-2s.com/images/gappage_600.jpg I applied "dobs" of flox on the inside edges and then wiped away excess which "oozed out" when the canopy was finally clamped and allowed to dry. http://www.kr-2s.com/images/semicircle_600.jpg When dried, I filled in the drilled holes with flox and then a thin layer of flox was applied to the outside 1" edge and a strip of carbon fiber laid over this. http://www.kr-2s.com/images/yellowtape_600.jpg The canopy is essentially held in place in a flox / carbon fibre channel. After some messing about I ended up using the 2 part expanding foam and held the urethane to the timber with the sash clamps to stop any movement. http://www.kr-2s.com/elevator.html To glue 2 x 2" sheets together I also used expanding foam and a makeshift press, however I learned fairly quickly to keep the part A & B stuff well clear of any join that is going to be sanded. I have just finished reading an accident investigation report where a Long-EZ winglet almost came off in flight. The post flight tear down and examination of the winglet revealed some poor fibreglassing techniques which included the use of micro in areas where flox was called for and the use of micro between fibreglass layers. The aircraft may be a Long-EZ however the detailed findings, including pictures are just as applicable to our KRs. Hi Dan. I have paid for and used Dreamweaver in the past and then came upon a very good alternative called "NVU" It is the software I use on my sites and find it to be excelent. I have picked up a similar tailwheel assembly off an RV but have not yet put up the photos. I had to weld a bracket to turn a round tube from the assembly to a flat spring. Working on my canopy yesterday, I had it upside down and resting on a large piece of yellow foam. There is opaque plastic stuck to both sides protecting the perspex. The day was not hot 21C (70F) and in the 30 minutes the canopy had direct sunlight, it has softened enough that the weight of itself has pressed a 6" dia flat spot into the curved surface that was touching the foam. I need some help here guys. We are expecting 39C (102F) in 2 days. Should I shape a foam plug to fit the inside and let the hot sun and weight of the canopy push the flat spot out? I sure don't feel like doing the canopy again but I also don't want to mess it up any more than it currently is. Well not quite.but it was a fantastic feeling none the less. For the first time ever, I had both wings bolted on the KR. The canopy was fitted and moving up and down smoothly on the new gas struts. A nose bowl from a KR2 was held in place with a single self tapper. My kids and I then pushed (taxied) the KR onto the road outside the house, they jumped in and I played the role of the motor. Any time a car came along we had to quickly nose into someone's driveway leaving the tail hanging out. Passers by stopped and commented on how small it looked for a two seater. I was thinking quite the opposite, with both wings bolted on, my KR almost fully spanned the road. My neighbor missed the parade so I just might have to perform some additional taxi tests next weekend. I believe others use the same. Not sure if the extra layer of glass adds weight as the middle of the wing no longer is filled with a big hunk of foam. The foam does not flex down when sanding the contour so I wouldn't worry about that. Whilst there are some things I would do differently next time around, I would do the wing skins same way again. I tossed up the idea of installing a small locker in each outer wing but never got around to it. If I decide to do it down the track it is a much simpler job to cut a "door" than to hollow out and glass the inside. That's the way I have built my skins but the standard method works too and I would guess takes less time. Daily building sees the second wing almost completed. Hopefully the rashes on my arms and legs will subside as I get a break from urethane and resin work. The weather here in southern Australia has been really cold lately which was a good excuse to get out the welding equipment and warm up. I know it has been a while since there has been a building update on my site. And some have asked if things have slowed. The answer is "Absolutely not!" I am about 3/4 of the way through the other wing and currently making the bellcrank access panel. I thought it would be silly to show the same pics on the RH wing as the left. This wing is taking about half the time to build as I do not have to spend time thinking about how to do "this or that" and then do it another 2 or 3 times anyway. I am really looking forward getting the KR on the footpath for a photo shoot with both wings attached. Having been to the Australian International Airshow and viewed aircraft through the eyes of a builder, I need some clarification about some building practices. I always thought, and have since confirmed in AC 43.13 par7-64a, "DO NOT use self-locking nuts on parts subject to rotation." I saw many aircraft both experimental and certified that used locking nuts in situations that I thought would have called for a castellated nuts and cotter pins. http://www.kr-2s.com/images/krnet/tecnam1_800.jpg I would like to know if I am misinterpreting the rule, that maybe it is ok to use self-locking nuts here and that if the bolt was reversed, and the nut did up on the rod end bearing side of the flap actuaror, that a castellated nut would be used instead. Hi all. I have just returned from the Australian International Airshow where I was able to see Albert Cassar's KR2 with Jodel style wings and the AS5048 airfoil. When taking the photos of his aircraft I was able to shelter under it when it started to rain, so "Thanks Albert" I have created a page for it here. http://www.kr-2s.com/aussies/cassar.html After sunset last nigh a microburst hit the airport and 6 aircraft were flipped onto their backs, completely writing off some of them, Other aircraft sustained damage when they pulled pegs or were tied down loosely. The Regel Renegade in these 3 pics sustained some fairly major damage. The cowl was bashed up, the landing gear collapsed, the lower wing is obviously in bad shape. Whilst the photo does not show it, the top wing main spar was broken and loosed 2 feet in from the end. My Corvair is so smooth you can't feel any kind of vibration on the panel...and certainly can't see any! I got my engine balanced at a Corvair College last year. I thought it was smooth before I had it balanced, but there was a real difference afterward. According to his numbers, he reduced it by about a factor of five! That reminds me...I need to do that to this one, although (again) I can't imagine how it could be any smoother. I've done a lot of prop testing lately (several props from other people's airplanes), and one of them vibrated so badly it made me want to land immediately and take it off to prevent damage to my engine. It turns out that engine was properly balanced, but was not aerodynamically balanced (one blade was pulling harder than the other one), and this was made by a "reputable" prop maker! I was at Moontown a few months ago and an RV6 guy asked if I wanted to fly around the patch with him. Sure, why not? When he did the runup it was so rough that I thought one whole cylinder of that IO-360 was completely gone, but he seemed unbothered. We ran down the 2200' grass strip and I thought "surely he'll abort the takeoff, it's so rough", but no, we kept going. On climbout I thought surely we'd land immediately to see what the problem was...but no, he just flew away. I asked "doesn't that vibration make you nervous?". He said "Oh, that's the way all these big four cylinder Lycomings are!" I do know that he's never had his engine/prop assembly balanced, and suggested he do so ASAP. I'm glad I fly behind a Corvair. I guess you have to experience it to believe it. I realize there are no Corvairs in Australia, Phil, so this is not aimed at you. But engine/prop balancing is worth every penny. Just make sure you have your final spinner installed and painted before you do it. We have successfully had these rip off artists removed from eBay before. I was even able to have a Russian web site put out of business but only because they used a US company to process their financial transactions. I notified the US clearance house and quickly had their means of income severed. The company was added to a list of known "thieves" which all processing houses in the west check before offering their services. Earlier today I notified Sebastian Heintz of Zenith. eBay has a complaints section specifically for copyright owners and I gave him the direct link. Sebastian has already replied with thanks. Well it has just gone 11:45pm and the current temperature is 82F. Ok, I am in Australia. And I think we hit 100F earlier today. Anyway, I had planned to finish the carbon fiber layer on the underside of the wing today but realized it would be an impossible task in this heat. I did about 1/3 of the wing last night when the air temperature was 66F and found that even with the slow acting hardener and my one pair of hands, the resin was curing faster than I would have liked. I was busier than a one armed brick layer in Beruit.(Australian saying). Today was a definite no no for large scale resin work. I did some work on a bellcrank, cut some more carbon fiber for the wing.while I am on the subject, cutting all this fabric on the 45 degree bias has left me with heaps of offcut wedges. Think I will have enough to build a delta wing after the KR! I also cleaned up the garage and before throwing out some scrap CF and FG pieces I decided to heat test light and dark colors with a small temperature gun. I had 3 pieces of cured composite. The first piece of carbon fiber had been peeled off some composite work, so it had the dark micro stuck to the underside. The second piece was the aileron trailing edge offcut so it had 1/8" flox between 2 layers of carbon fiber. The third piece was a single layer of fiber glass.
