KR> Glassing the fuse
Steve, There was a very lengthy discussion on using Kevlar a few years ago. One of the guys had a large amount he came upon free or nearly so and the final decision was that it was not worth the effort unless you were pretty sure you'd be taking small-arms-fire. Save the Kevlar for pulling over yourself when you get flamed on KRnet... Glassing the fuselage is not necessary, but if you do, I am pretty sure you'd want to use the very lightest glass you can as it is not necessary for strength, only to add smoothness, but it will add unecessary weight. KR> cockpit noise
Phil, There are a lot of issues with noise sources that can complicate your solution. Secondary vibration from the fuselage plywood and the plexiglass canopy and even the fiberglass turtle-deck can combine to make considerable noise. While you might not be able to address many of the causes, the use of soft, noise-cancelling foam covered with light-weight cloth might help a lot. Using the stiffer foams covered with thicker upholstery-type material might look prettier, but is less effective when it comes to deadening the sound that vibration causes in the cockpit. Also, you are faced with the problem of not adding too much weight or anything that might come loose and get tangled in the controls. A lot of folk just think the noise is all part of the fun of flying. KR> Clamps for gussets and gusset idea

Very handy and helpful tip. Frank skp...@charter.net wrote: Chris, clamps for holding gussets really are not needed. Most will stay in place on their own. The ones that want to slide to the floor you can hold in place with a piece of coat hanger wire bent into a "C". As for attaching your gussets to the cross members first. As Ron stated it would work on the pieces that are 90 degrees to the cross members. But all the others will have to be curved to match the curve of the longerons. (That would be most of them). Since this curve is more parabolic in shape it would be hard to do. But then I did things while building my plane that others said would be to hard and I made them work. I do not understand why this topic has commanded so much time and space on KRnet. Both the Corvair and the Jabiru are good choices for the KR. The Jabiru costs about $10,000 more than the Corvair in the US. This seems to be a critical point because I keep seeing builders in the US writing that the Jabiru is too expensive and builders OUTSIDE the US asking why they should build a heavier Corvair. Maybe $10,000 US is not much money in Europe and Australia. Builders outside the US probably find it just as expensive to find and build a Corvair as to buy a Jabiru. Put whatever you want in it. Be careful talking on KRnet about Dynel. You could start a thread that could last for months and have people in a very excited state. Don't ask how I know... To address your question - what I learned is that Dynel is no longer used because it holds more epoxy and the end product ends up being heavier than the same part made from fiberglass. KR> How many flight hours before flying KR ??
There are low-time spam-can pilots who have flown a KR without any previous time in a KR and I applaud them. I had the same experience that Steve Eberhardt did when I flew with Marty Roberts - I made an extreme effort to hold my hand very still and the plane either went nose UP or nose DOWN. Steve was an avid regular on KRnet until then and he quickly decided to build an RV. I believe he's still on KRnet. At the time almost no one except Marty was offering even as much as a ride in a KR and I felt very lucky to get one quick ride in Marty's plane, so the question of "dual" in a KR was out of the question. I flew a Vans RV-4 with no problems and found it a very easy plane to keep straight and level and also very responsive. A low-time pilot who has only flown Cessnas or Pipers is extremely ill-advised to get into a KR alone and try to fly it. Bill Gaudlip (who built and sold Jeff York's KR) found, the "high-speed taxi" can turn into an inverted take-off and landing pretty quick. He was lucky to have gotten out with minor injuries and a plane he could re-build and sell. Susan Rand told me a few years ago at Sun-N-Fun that she often flew with Ken when she was very small. Years later when she took flying lessons in a Cessna she thought the controls were broken because nothing happened when she tried to move them. The instructor laughed and said that was because she wasn't pushing on them. She had thought it would be like the KR where you barely pressed and got a real change in the plane. I believe Bill Reentz when he writes about flying his KR-1 by moving his head in the direction he wanted to go. Obviously Ken Rand had no chance to get some time in a KR before he flew his. Lots of others have done it too, and maybe you'll be one of them. You will have a lot more fun on that first flight in your KR if you've spent a lot of time flying in a KR with someone who knows how to fly one. And, by-the-way, good luck getting names of EAA tech advisors who know anything about KRs or especially have ever even SAT in one, much less feel confident to fly one. Your best chance for either is right here on KRnet. On those last two points, I do not think your results will vary much. Frank Ross w-z...@sbcglobal.net wrote: If you need to find someone to get some dual in type or similar contact the EAA. KR> inch
Kique, It is sad that we do not all use the same measuring system. But, is your airspeed indicator in kilometers? Is the altimeter in meters? No, because these are expensive to replace and flyers are happy using what they have already paid good money for. It is the same for everyone else. It is not easy to get 300,000,000 people to throw away every wrench, every measuring stick (ruler), every measuring and cooking cup and spoon, every cook-book, every measuring instrument (like even the speedometer on every car and truck) and go out and buy all new ones simply because someone doesn't like the system that has been in place all our lives. Consider the medical field where not only the metric system, but avoidupois and apothecary systems are still in use. Pharmacists, doctors and nurses must be able to calculate and convert between the systems. What a nightmare! It would be nice if we all used the same system, but we don't and we won't for awhile. But look at the opportunity you have! You could not only translate the plans into Spanish, but also convert them to the metric system! See how fortunate you are? "Joseph H. Horton" <joe.kr2s.buil...@juno.com> wrote: Guys, Another fine day for flying. Temp was about 60 deg. today and I could have flown just wearing tee shirt. I spent the afternoon getting my medical out of the way for another 2 years and headed to the airport. The wing tanks were empty but the header tank was all but full. I only had a little over an hour of daylight left so i perflighted and started her up and with the warmer air it did not take long to get up to temps. The oil pressure seemed normal but I would keep an eye on it. I departed to the west climbing at about 1300/min and leveled out at 2000 ft. At full throttle she gained speed quickly and I was soon doing just about 170 indicated. I was headed to a larger airport just south of Allentown and by the time I got trimmed up and the radio changed I was only 5 miles out and called for the active and entered the pattern. I am very familiar with this airport and the pattern went as expected. The runway is about 30 ft wider and about 1000 ft longer than at home. It looked huge compared to what I have been landing on. Touch down was good and I basically was practicing to keep the nose wheel up for a longer time in the roll out to try and shorten up the roll out. This runway is so smooth. At home there is a bump that I have been using to jump off the ground on take off and if I am on the runway before I get to it on landing it pops the plane back into the air. Which has not been a problem by just doing nothing but hold the controls steady and let it settle back down. I did 4 patterns here before heading home by way of circling my house for the kids and my uncles hose for my dad visiting from Florida. All this time I have kept track of the oil pressure and it stayed pretty normal the whole time not going over 52 #. Now I don't know what to think except that WW told me to check out the electric sender unit, and right now that seems like a very real chance that it may be acting up. One more landing to do back at home on the narrow, short and rough runway. I ended up a little high and tried the slip again. I lost altitude quickly and did not gain any speed. I love this plane. I was a little fast a touch down but had no trouble stopping. I have changed my flap procedure to dropping the flaps on finial and judging when to put the last notch in by my position on finial. The other thing to note is I have to take out all the power pretty early in finial. Sorry to bore all of you but finish your planes and I promise to read your flight reports too. Probably everyone who's been to a Gathering where Steve Bennet's KR 1 1/2 was will answer this for you. Steve's narrowed plane is a KR-2, NOT a 2-S, but that shouldn't make much difference. But why? It's not like you've got a lot of extra room anyway. With the full-width plane you have the extra room to throw your bag, keep charts, and a lot of other stuff you won't have room for if you squeeze it down to a single. You could also add an upper wing and have a helluva nice Pitts replica, too. Or use three KR-1 fuselages for a P-38 replica. You should also be able to get a new set within a reasonable time from Rand-Robinson. I have had three sets of KR plans, none of which I bought from R-R, all of which were in excellent condition when I bought them and NONE of which were ever used to complete a plane. I am against buying plan-sets which have already been used once to build a plane, but that's not what you are interested in. The first set I bought from a guy in my EAA chapter who never even started his KR. About a month later I bought a partially started KR in excellent condition which had a very nice, like-new set of plans with it. The next Spring I bought a crap-load of stuff that a friend had left over from building his KR and it included a nice plan-set he had inherited from someone else who had given up on building his KR. One of these went to Danny McCormick, the guy who bought all my KR parts when I came to England. The other two sets are in storage and I cannot get to them, or I'd offer one to you. Sorry. I've discussed this with Jeanette Rand and she has said simply to send her a note with the serial numbers of the plans and she'll transfer the serial numbers to my name. I know she's not always easy to contact, but she's basically a one-woman shop. I don't want to discuss whether she should turn the business over to someone else, because that's none of my business. The price of the plans is very reasonable and I'd consider buying a set from Jeanette. She may even be able to tell you who originally built the plane you have and give you some details about it. Just don't expect to get her on the first call. There's probably more like me who have extra sets of KR plans and I don't think there's anything wrong with buying a set from them. I'm sure Jeanette would like you to buy them from her, but she's not going to black-list you if you don't, like Nat Puffer would, for instance. I asked him about buying a set of Cozy plans from one of his customers who was not going to build a plane from them. He was not happy with the question and told me I'd have to get the guy who sold the plans to me to give me any support I might need building the plane. Puffer was definitely NOT willing to accept a small fee to transfer the plans to ME, which Jeanette will do FREE. She may not be much of a business woman, but I think she's one of the finest people I've met and you will enjoy knowing her, once you meet her. Good luck with your "new" KR and don't get discouraged. Things will fall into place before long and, meanwhile, you've got a great little plane to play with. Lucky Guy! KR> INFORMATION ABOUT KRs
While you are waiting for your manual... I know I sent this out just the last week or so, but maybe I wasn't clear about how important it is. I'll try to make it clearer. Anyone wanting information about KRs or building a KR ABSOLUTELY MUST SPEND SOME TIME IN THE FOLLOWING WEBSITES! I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO MAKE IT CLEARER Not only is there nearly everything you ever wanted to know about KRs in these sites (which the owners have spent almost as much time building as they did on their KRs, by-the-way) there are links to LOTS of other folk JUST LIKE YOU who are building, have built or are flying KRs. This is a resource you cannot afford to waste! AND REMEMBER, they can remove these websites any time they want and it is ALL GONE! Take a look now. Outside the US the English-speaking world uses the term "mil" for milimeters, as in nine milimeter, whereas we in the US, and maybe Canada, think it means a measurement in inches. KR> "Mil" as in MILIMETERS off topic
Thanks Serge, I'll try to be more careful about my spelling. :=] For sixty-five years I thought I was speaking English; then I came to England... All too true, Serge, it's just that as an American living in England the last two years, I realized the English and Australians (and probably New Zealanders as well) use the word "mil" when they are talking about millimeters and most Americans wouldn't know this. I think the metric system is a wonderful thing, but I have a house full of tools, measuring devices, cookbooks, etc., that I'd have to throw out to switch over. Is it worth it? All the traffic signs in the US (and maybe someplace else in the world, but I think we are the only ones left using this wonderful, but archaic system) would have to be discarded and replaced, billions of dollars. Is is worth it? And, we now have the confusion of people converting not only from Knots to MPH but kilometers as well, for what purpose? Then there's the altitude in meters when so much of our existing equipment is still in feet. Will it stop? Not until everything new is metric and everyone is ready to throw away everything they are using. I know it'll change someday, but I still say "If it ain't broke, why fix it?" I think the huge success of the KR is that it is simple. Add enough complexity and you end up with a different plane (Lancair) or you never get it built. Isaac, Welcome to KRnet. We may have crossed paths in '89, as I was taking care of wounded in a hanger at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, TX. Glad to hear you learned to land planes and don't have to keep getting out before they land. Jumping would have been better than some of my landings... We were worried about Serge, since he has one of the older KRs that he brought from Africa when he moved to Paris a few years ago. Worked very well, but too busy for me. Of course this could be adapted to take advantage of the "pucker-factor" but you have to make sure you don't over-fill the header tank in that case... Header tank fuel "gauge" was the old tube from the top of the header tank, out through the panel, down vertically to the bottom of the panel and back into the header tank. KR> Weight testing
Sand or salt can get loose and cause problems just as a cement block or weights can. You do not want even 25 pounds of loose sand sliding to the rear of the plane when you put the nose up. You could make "rope dummies" like we used in air-rescue training. That way you can make different size dummies and strap them in real good. We used heavy rope, wound in figure-of-eight with additional rope wrapped around to make legs, arms, torso and even the head. I'm talking THICK rope. When we had the dummy completed we put an old flight suit on it, but you could probably use an old pair of overalls, and could lift it, carry it, put it in the basket or on the hoist and pull it into the helicopter. Works good. You'd be surprised how heavy these things can be in the same size as a human. Maybe not as heavy as Jerry or me... To expand a little on Virg's Mantra... The first set of plans I ever got were a set of KR-1 plans. Don't bother. Buy a set of KR-2plans. The KR-1 plans may have gotten better, but I doubt it. Sure, they are cheap, but here's a case where you really DO get what you pay for. Or DONT get what you pay for. If you are an experienced builder, the KR-1 plans will probably be okay, but they just really are not worth even the little bit you pay for them when you can get so much more with the extra money you pay for the KR-2 plans. KR> Free e-mail accounts
I've been off-net for several months but followed the digest on e-scribe until about a month ago when it would no longer come up. All I'd get was the "That page unavailable" page from MS. Anyway, glad to be back on KRnet and up-dating on the Gathering. --- Mark Langford <n5...@hiwaay.net> wrote: > Anybody that knows of a > free email account that actually works is welcome to > post information on > it... > > Mark Langford, Huntsville, Alabama Because I travel a lot and move house about every four years, I've used "Yahoo!" free e-mail for nearly ten years with no problems. They are not my ISP because a. I want to be able to access the account from any library or friend's computer. b. yahoo wasn't available here when I got here anyway. c. If I get p*ssed at my ISP I can change REAL easy without having to e-mail everyone and change my e-mail address. d. Their new (free again) photo mail makes it real easy to send embedded pictures. e. I can have more than one free account, so I can use one for aviation, one for personal, one for internet shopping, etc. I've got several friends and relatives who have free yahoo accounts and NO computer. A free yahoo account is how they get to send free e-mails from their local library. When my computer quits on me, or my electricity goes out, I go to a public library and use their computer. Support your local library! One of the best features is Yahoo's "Bulk" folder. Anything that trips their Spam trigger goes into a Bulk folder. Looking through the crap in my Bulk folder it is easy to see why. Only on VERY rare occassions is a legitimate note in the Bulk folder. Then it's usually one of those that cousin Myrtle FW,FW,FW,FW to me because it was cute or she isn't taking her medications again. On the other hand, ALL my lists, genealogy, aviation, even advertising I have ASKED for, goes into my "Inbox" folder. I don't know how they do it, but if I have to start paying someday, it'll be worth it. My ISP is a British one (onetel) which I have never used for e-mail. Don't need to, I've got yahoo. I don't work for Yahoo or have any connection with them. Honest.
