KR> Landing speeds

2015-02-17 Thread Joe Nunley
Dear Colin,

If the weather is good, I fly about 3 to 4 times a week. I fly with my
"other"plane out of the 1200 foot strip. I have been testing different
landing techniques in preparation for the completion of my KR2. I have
found that the technique that you describe, "push the stick forward to pin
the aircraft on the ground, ride the bumps, I can see clearly and you
balance the aircraft on brakes and rudder and slowly have to push more
forward as the speed bleeds off", is the technique that I believe to be
the most viable option. One reason it appears viable is that I spend less
time floating and more time slowing down. A given touchdown speed gives a
fairly consistent landing distance taking wind and weight as variables. I
can duplicate landings consistently and so far safely. I have found that,
for me, I use 70 MPH instead of your 80 MPH, 70 MPH is still
a controllable speed and I only have 1200 feet. Everything else seems
about the same. Thank you for sharing.

I greatly appreciate everyone's input and value their opinion. This is a
fantastic group.

thanks,

Joe

Mark and those that live in the Land of the Frozen?.. Me too? I have a
couple hangar doors one overhead and another bi-fold?. for the ice problem that
freezes the door down, I have installed a heat tape like those that are
installed around water pipes in the hollow seal at the bottom of the door?.
pulled it through with a tape wire and installed the blank end on one end and
the controller on the other hooked up to a long drop cord that travels with the
door and yet reaches the plug in? electricity usage about like t 30 watt bulb?
it has always kept the seal from freezing down? still have to move the snow or
ice just outside? a bit difference Mark cause I?m in Iowa not Wisc or Minn? jw

2015-01-01 Thread Joe. E. Wallace
KR Group, First of all Happy New Year to all.

I?m in the process of building a different airplane, but have followed this
site for a long time. Way too much good info to stay away. I have a need to
find a suitable sealant to put around the fittings that are installed in
plastic ?? fuel tanks. there is a aluminum fitting that is held in the tank
wall or base with a large washer and nut, also a small rubber o-ring that is
squeezed between the washer and the tank . Seems a bit fragile to me and
wondering if I can?t strenthen the seal with a semi-liquid sealant that would
stand up to the fuel? I can?t find a caulking or sealant that is resistant to
fuel? any ideas? tnx jw

KR> Belly Board

2014-12-25 Thread Joe Nunley
RE: Multi-holes drilled air brake : any good ?

I just spoke to my flying buddy, Carl "Flaps" Laffert, 84, who flew both
the SBD Dauntless during WW II with the Marine Corps from Mindanao. He also
flew the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver. He told me the perforations create more
drag. They were first used in the US on the Northrop (a Douglas division at
the time) A-17, built for the Army. It had 3-section flaps, one under each
wing and one in the center. These were on the bottom only, not split as on
the Dauntless. The Army didn't like dive bombers so Douglas built the
Dauntless for the Navy with the split dive flaps/brakes.

He said the first version on the Helldiver had "smooth" flaps (as he called
them) and the dive speed was 315 knots. On a later version they perforated
then like on the Dauntless and at the same dive angle, the dive speed was
285 kts.

Story by Ed Moorman, Shalimar Fl, 553, Former R/C Report Fun Aerobatics
Columnist. 76 and up to my old tricks!

Also found this;
Abstract

Measurements are described of the drag coefficient of porous circular
cylinders (60% open-area ratio) fixed between solid hemispherical end caps,
for five values of aspect ratio between 7.92 and 2.67. The Reynolds number
varies between 104 and 2.6 ? 105. It is found that the drag coefficient
increases with aspect ratio much as a solid cylinder's but its drag
coefficient is about 20% higher (varying between 0.88 to 0.96 as the aspect
ratio is increased).

Flow-visualization experiments have also been conducted, and show how fluid
passes through the cylinders and how the vortex shedding is weaker than for
solid cylinders.

Although based on a cylinder and not flat plate.

KR> Last of the newsletters, Quarterly newsletters, brake update

2014-12-21 Thread Joe Nunley
I have been looking for wheels and brakes, good timing Mark. I will also
purchase my engine tomorrow. A Honda L 1.5 from the Fit. Inspired by the
Viking 100 hp auto conversion engine . I could really use some PSRU plans.

Merry Christmas!

KR> Abrasive Tape for Sale

2014-12-12 Thread Joe. E. Wallace
KR Group

I recently noted on this site that I had some abrasive tape for sale?. $15.00
per roll the rolls are 50 Yds long by 3 ? wide?. some have adhesive back? I
realize that is a lot of tape however, I have no problem with shipping a roll
or so to a group that would like to split it? I am finding the shipping cost
is between $20.00 - $35.00 depending on the distance? UPS seems to be the least
expensive. I would like to sell my inventory to make room for other things so
e-mail or call 1 641 7456 7837 at your convenience. You give me your shipping
address, the number of rolls, the grit size you want 24, 36, 60 I get a quote
for shipping and with your approval it goes the next day? jw

KR> Abrasive Tape for sale

2014-11-21 Thread Joe. E. Wallace
Info for the KR group or anyone needing abrasive cloth in tape form

I have rolls of abrasive tape on cloth backing available in 24 grit, 36 grit
and 60 grit. These rolls are 50 yds long and 3 " wide. Some have adhesive
back but not all. I'm not sure due to age if the adhesive is still good,
however the abrasive side is fine. I do have one roll of 36 grit that is only
2 " wide. I will sell each roll for $15.00 plus UPS shipping. I find shipping
cost from $20.00 to $35.00 depending on the distance, as I am located in SW
Iowa. Please e-mail me or call 641 745 7837 if this product will fit your
needs ... Probably could be used attached to a long 1 x 4 for sanding foam
wingsThanks.

KR> Digital Scale

2013-12-23 Thread Joe. E. Wallace
Just purchased a Sticky Stuff pump system from Wicks adjustable ratio give
good results..(experience from a fellow builder)... takes some experimenting
to get the proper ratio. the delivery tubes would seem to guarantee proper
mix... we'll see... will be delivering epoxy and hardner with same stroke to
different cups for measurements onto a digital scale until I am comfortable
with repeatability... jw

If anyone is interested i have my KR2 up for sale again as the previous buyer
decided not to complete the sale. I have lowered the price to 8500.00 which is
less ?than the parts alone are worth. To see pictures i have an ad on
Barnstomers that describes the plane fully,This is a great deal for a proven
and nice flying kr. If you have any intrest give me a call or email ? thanks

I ?am selling my KR2 after many years of ?flying enjoyment ? the plane can be
seen on barnstormers under the listing for KR aircraft. The price is only
$11.000 which is less than the kit and engine alone. I now fly a Mooney M20F
which is the reason i am selling my KR. This is a excellent flying aircraft
which will make someone a great plane. any questions call 207-794-6450 or

done by a gear head that I know and spends most of his time doing race car
engines for Sprint cars... he done the balance, blueprint, port and polish
sure makes the engine nice still haven't started it as this a bit further
down the road for me have the reduction drive mounted and yet to modify
the flywheel or front pulleys for ignition pickup mounts...most of the
needed parts not on the engine were available from Tony Duncan in KS for this
conversion including coolant items... Will take some picts and send jw

KR> I need to Fly

2013-03-06 Thread Joe. E. Wallace
Mark

Somehow I don't see me dealing with that much snow or ICE I lived in MN a
couple winters and found you folks have two seasons Winter and the 4th of
July... A suggestion for the bottom of a door freezing down. On my overhead
doors that use a rubber seal on the bottom, I replaced them with a hollow
rubber seal and inserted one of the heat tapes through this opening. The
control is attached to the door and an extra long drop cord is then attached
so it will allow the door to open and close without unplugging the cord. It is
sometimes necessary to swing the extra cord out of the way when the door is
closing. It uses the same amount of a small bulb and only warms it
sufficiently to keep the door from freezing down... However I am in Iowa a
bit warmer. jw

KR> Fly In

2012-01-15 Thread Joe. E. Wallace
Dan

This was the Sport Aviation Ass'n and was held at Frasca Field in Urbana IL.
It has become a non organization now, however, the fly-in was held last year
and has been one of the best ones I've ever attended. No vendors allowed..
camping on the ground, meals available and the hosts are unbelievable? Tony
Frasca and his family tour through their facilities and museum of many
airplanes? I will look up the dates and send a flyer from last year if I can
find it? jw

1) It looks to me like it is a HAPI engine conversion. Most likely an
1835cc. Stock 69mm crank with 92mm bore.
2) Learn to hand prop. You will save weight not having a starter. The plane
flies better if it's light weight.
3) Polyester/vinyl ester is not compatible with epoxy. Use epoxy resin to
make any repairs. I don't know where you get this 'polyurethane' stuff.
4) I would get rid of those seats and put the KR sling seats in for
starters. Then see where your knees are in relation to the cross member.
Move your seat back.

KR> RE: KRnet Digest, Rotary Anyone?

2011-12-31 Thread Joe Beyer
I have a little stick time in a rotary powered aircraft. A Coot amphibian
with a pilon mounted Mazda 12A with electronic ignition, 2:1 reduction with
a 5 blade ground adjustable prop. It slows down to 500rpm and takes off at
about 6800rpm. Very smooth operation but very high fuel consumption. Also
extremely loud. It had nitrous oxide injection which added another thousand
rpm for takeoff. It got you up on the step and off the water. About 2100
lbs. empty weight. Not for the light sport pilot.

What are your thought of a simple 1/4" tube attached on the filler neck
pointing toward the airstream above the wing like the header tank design in
the KR plans? Or should I attach the tube to the filler neck and route it
out the bottom of the wing? Which would perform better? Pro and cons?

I would install the vent line into the lower skin, extend it through the
underside pointing downward. Cut a 50deg. angle in the tube on the foreword
face to give you positive air flow. I did this on my composite tank,
extending the vent tube through the firewall and downward with that angle. I
didn't want a ram air effect that pressurizes the tank with increased
airspeed speed. Also I attached a little screen to the bottom of the vent.

I used the spring bar sawed in half and tapered for my tri gear conversion.
I made a trailing link gear leg which has taken some pretty bouncy landings.
The biggest challenge was getting the nose wheel to not shimmy or bend at
the pivot point.

I want to convert it to tri-gear, as all my time has been in 172s & I'm not
quite comfortable picking up a new airframe and learning to fly tailwheel at
the same time.

My KR-2 was a tail dragger years ago and after a hard landing on my fifth
flight I decided to do the conversion. It was a great improvement in the
ground handling. I think the 2-s version is better suited for tail wheels
due to it's longer length. I designed my own hardware and the biggest
challenge was getting the nose wheel right.

Just a little more detail on the SAA Until this year, I've attended this
event at Urbana IL. at Frasca Field. A 5400' paved runway, with a 3200 sod
strip. The location of Frasca Intl. the manufacturer of the most advanced
flight simulators built. Operated by the Frasca family with the support of
Paul and Audrey Poberzny... Truly a grass roots event, with good food at very
reasonable prices, catered by a local EAA chapter. Forums by different pilots
about different airplanes and the displays of the Frasca collection as well as
the many fly-ins... 2 1/2 days of pleasure with no outside vendors or
loud noises (except airplanes). Entertainment has been visiting with other
pilots from all over the country. Paul and Rudy started the SAA to continue
the grass roots environment that started EAA With Paul's age and the
efforts to bring this to happening, the last year has been done by the Frasca
family with Paul's blessing and the thanks of many devoted just PLANE
people... May it continue!

Thanks for the time jw

I have a KR1 that has the same stretch as the KR2S in boat stage for
sale. Foam and fiberglass, closed spars with second inspection done,
And some extras. You won't find better workmanship on any other
project. You may be able to get it real cheap.

KR> RE:Fuel Filter Cap and venting

I vented my 15 gallon composite tank to a point below the firewall. The vent
line goes foreword and angles down. I have a screen at the end to prevent
blockage.

Thanks for the reply's on the cap types. I like the one Joe sent I will
look into that one.

HOW TO VENT the header tank? My thinking (although might be stupid) is
that if I vent the header tank out the top then if while I am transferring
fuel from the wing tanks and get distracted and forget to turn off the pump
I will notice fuel on the windscreen. I really don't want to put a switch
in the tank for a warning light but if that is the way to do it then.
Just looking the the K.I.S.S. system.

My hat is off to you Steve, I was one of the original purchaser of a set of

of meeting and working with Ken and his family until I sold my project...I
have a lot of admiration for all who have kept this 'kettle boiling" so to
speak and the one that I remember is Steve Bennett. He has been in this for a
long time and has a lot of experience and knowledge of the KR's... I truly

You might try setting the aircraft to the highest angle of attack expected
in flight by placing something under the nose wheel with minimum fuel in the
tank. Then disconnect the fuel output from the gasculator and point it
toward a measuring cup. With a stop watch time the amount of fuel it takes
to fill a specific amount in the cup. Then calculate the gph.

I need to verify the fuel flow rate on my KR-2. The VW 2180 would burn
about 6 gallons per hour full throttle 3600 RPM, full rich, max climb rate
at 14 degrees AOA. FAA says there must be a 50 percent safety factor. So,
need to verify 9 gallon per hour fuel flow. I cannot just fly to see if the

aircraft will not run out of fuel under these conditions because that would
not demonstrate the safety factor and a couple of other things. Other
considerations: All fuel is in the wings; have an engine driven mechanical
fuel pump. Just windmilling with the starter won't get but a few hundred
RPM. I can block up the aircraft on the ground for the 14-degree AOA. Yes,

I know about the 2-minute max throttle de-rating.
There are lots of references in the archives on flow testing and Facet
pumps. I find nothing for on testing engine-driven fuel pumps or how the
flow was actually measured.
Any suggestions on how I can demonstrate a 9 gallon per hour fuel flow rate?

(which, of course, the 2180 will never need)
