KR> Reading related to Cranks and flywheels
Seems to me that all of the ?solutions? just transfers the problem away from the crankshaft, dosen?t make it go away. Whatever the propeller is connected to just has to be strong enough to never break. So the ultimate solution seems to be a stronger crankshaft to withstand the propeller vibrations. Can the Corvair crankcase bearing be bored out for a bigger journal? And can the crankshaft be modified to a larger journal? I know they can rebuild them by building up the journal with an electric welder and regrinding it.
KR> Re: KR2S Plans lacking detail
You think those plans are lacking try the one's I bought in 1973 for the KR 1 four sheets and a green book telling you how to build it. From: Mark LangfordTo: KRnet Sent: Monday, August 15, 2011 4:19 AM Subject: Re: KR> Re: KR2S Plans lacking detail Tim Caughron wrote: >> Do I just guesstimate how wide the fuselage is supposed to be at the tail section, or am I missing that critical measurement. Do I understand that the plans have no procedure for tri-gear, and that the details for those will be included in the install instructions of the gear themselves?<< You're not the first guy to wonder these things, and you won't be the last. A lot of these planes have been built and flown, despite the poor state of the plans. Those plans is the reason I built my website, the first one devoted to KR construction. If you look hard enough in the plans notebook for the KR2, you'll find mention of joining the fuselage sides up to the vertical stabilizer's aft spar to finish forming the boat. This is the width of the fuselage back at the place where the rudder fastens (it's a tapered piece that's something like 2" wide on average). Taper the spar first, and leave the plywood overlapping a bit to provide a gap seal for the rudder. So use the farthest aft measurement that's given for a cross member as your last known point, and then the tailpiece, and the other cross pieces are just cut to fit. I'd give better directions, but I'm at work and the plans are at home. As for tri-gear, that fits under the same heading as a lot of things...you don't get the one-sheet plans for it unless you bought the optional parts themselves from Rand Robinson. Diehl sold most of the nose gear, and his instructions are online at http://www.diehlaero.com/NOSE%20GEAR%20INSTRUCTIONS.pdf . I think Steve ?Glover at NVAero is now selling that gear. I'll let him clarify. There's a lot of guesswork building a KR from those plans, so better get used to it now... KR> Progress Report & Another Cracked Longeron Story
Are the longerons already glued to the skins? If so, why not just reinforce the sections in question with 2 or 3 layers of 6 oz fiberglass, wrapping the glass fibers over the section at a 45 degree angle and onto the skin about an inch. Cover the longeron in this manner about 6? on each side of the damage. If you have it, it would help to underlay the glass with some carbon fiber.

Al Etherington Hi Al, Unfortunately, I do not have the part number on them. I bought them from Ron Frieberger back in 2004 and dont know if he is still on the KR Net or not. They are fog driving lights which you would mount on a bumper or truck roof. I see them all the time at car parts stores and even Wal Mart which is where he bought these. All fog driving lights have a reflector in front of the bulb which spreads the light beam. You will want to take the case apart and remove the reflector in front of the bulb. This will give you a spot light instead of a flood light and will increase the effective range 10 times for use as a landing light. Somewhere I have a drawing which circulated on the net which shows how to remove the reflector and it may have had the Mfg and part number on it. I am involved in building a homemade lumber drying kiln right now and have been studying what I can find on the 'net about it. Check that out. The drying process is quite complicated.

The basement is dry and heated, with a ground level door to the backyard, and I have woodworking and metalworking equipment there. The problem is space. There's a furnace room in the middle of the basement, and the area where I want to put the assembly table is 76" wide on one end and 80" wide on the other. The KR manual says the table is made of two sheets of particle board put end to end "and cut off to length of table desired." But leaving the table 48" wide seems much more than I need and it would make it harder to move around it. How narrow a table can I get away with? (And how long does it have to be? My space is plenty long enough to build the boat, but I don't see any point making the table longer than it needs to be). The hard part is going to be getting the boat out the door, which is currently 32" wide (though if I take out the door frame I can get it to get to 34"). The plans seem to want me to build the tail after the boat, but I don't see why I can't do that last, and without the tail, the boat turned sideways can get through the door, maybe even with the wing spars on. The table doesn't need to be any longer that it takes to layout the fuselage sides - so what-ever that is based on the short or long fuselage. I would probably make it as wide as the widest part of the fuselage as you will need that when you start to erect the sides. The Horizontal stab/Elevator can be saved to last but you will need to mount the rudder post when you frame the boat. The Vertical Stabilizer is constructed after the Horizontal/Elevators are mounted. Morning everyone. I have looked at alot of reports including the NTSB on home builts and KR's and I found that most accidents could have been avoided. alot of people get so hung up in flying that they don't do a good preflight or a post flight, yes I said post flight. One thing the military aviation teaches is things go wrong and in the air is not the time to find out. Don't get in a routine, one time after flying check flight controls, next time landing gear, prop ( no fun intended Mark). We build these machine's with pride, at lest I do but we make mistake's and anything we build will and can brake. Out of all KR's I think Mark's plane is best because he can remove the turtle deck which make it easy to inspect flight control's and ect.Post flight is great as you find problem's and can fix them, preflight so you are sure your safe. Some pilot's want to fly so bad they say I will fix it when I get back, problem is sometime's they don't come back, get the point. KR's are very safe aircraft if well mantained so let's build, let's fly and be safe don't take chance's. KR> Oshkosh 365 - Discussion Boards - Kenyan homebuilt -
The A/C is 'ugly' all right, but to me that is the beauty of it, the 'little man' getting himself something that flies. forget the beauty, forget the finesse, forget the technology, he wants to fly! That used to be what the EAA was all abnout, then it got smothered by the rush to beauty and ever higher technology. Now, nobody shows up at Oshkosh with the cheap "little man's" planes that may not look like something out of science fiction with a $10,000 paint job. One of my best memories is of meeting a chap with a KR2 who flew into Oshkosh years ago. It looked awful, still hade theglass fabric showing all over through the obviously cheap paint job, he obviously had functionality as a priority over pure beauty, but it FLEW HIM TO OSHKOSH and did what he wanted it to do. I sort of think this pursuit of pure beauty and one-upsmanship is a great part of the reason that EAA has become primarily a millionaires club, the 'little man' flying his cheap homemade unsophisticated plane that he never intended to be a show-off piece has been shoved far into the background and scorned..
KR> Outboard fuel tanks
Watching this discussion of fuel tanks closely. I have built a Dragonfly (hasn't flown yet) and found the construction technique to be fast and easy (you have to be fast when applying epoxy). However, I want to start over with a conventional design that fits the requirements of E-LSA. I would like to use the same construction techniques used in the D-fly but do not know what the parameters or results of putting a hollow space inside of a foam core wing would be but think it might be doable as wing tip tanks, just hollow out the outermost 'x' inches of wing and use it as the tank, the least stress place in the wing. I am looking at the KR design as the basis for this plane and soaking up any ideas I can run across to help me out. Perhaps external tip tanks a la T33? I am aware that foam dissolves in gasoline..
KR> Fw: Object lesson - God's Grace
God's Grace What is mentioned here appears to be a shame, but the message is very true. I hope you are all blessed by this story. I wonder how many people will delete this without reading it because of the title. There once was a man named George Thomas, a pastor in a small New England town. One Easter Sunday morning, he came to the Church carrying a rusty, bent, old bird cage and set it by the pulpit. Eyebrows were raised and as if in response, Pastor Thomas began to speak . . . "I was walking through town yesterday when I saw a young boy coming toward me swinging this bird cage. On the bottom of the cage were three little wild birds, shivering with cold and fright. I stopped the lad and asked, "What do you have there, son?" "Just some old birds," came the reply. "What are you going to do with them?" I asked. "Take 'em home and have fun with 'em," he answered. "I'm gonna tease 'em and pull out their feathers to make 'em fight. I'm gonna have a real good time." "But you'll get tired of those birds sooner or later. What will you do then?" "Oh, I've got some cats," said the little boy. "They like birds. I'll take 'em to them." The pastor was silent for a moment. "How much do you want for those birds, son?" "Huh?! Why, you don't want them birds, mister. They're just plain old field birds. They don't sing. They ain't even pretty!" "How much?" the pastor asked again. The boy sized up the pastor as if he were crazy and said,"Ten dollars?" The pastor reached in his pocket and took out a ten dollar bill. He placed it in the boy's hand. In a flash, the boy was gone. The pastor picked up the cage and gently carried it to the end of the alley where there was a tree and a grassy spot. Setting the cage down, he opened the door, and by softly tapping the bars, persuaded the birds out, setting them free. So, that explained the empty bird cage on the pulpit, and then the pastor began to tell another story. One day Satan and Jesus were having a conversation. Satan had just come from the Garden of Eden, and he was gloating and boasting. "Yes, sir, I just caught a world full of people down there. Set me a trap, used bait I knew they couldn't resist. Got 'em all!" "What are you going to do with them?" Jesus asked. Satan replied,"Oh, I'm gonna have fun! I'm gonna teach them how to marry and divorce each other, how to hate and abuse each other, how to drink and smoke and curse. I'm gonna teach them how to invent guns and bombs and kill each other. I'm really gonna have fun!" "And what will you do when you are done with them?" Jesus asked. "Oh, I'll kill 'em," Satan glared proudly. "How much do you want for them?" Jesus asked. "Oh, you don't want those people. They ain't no good. Why, you'll take them and they'll just hate you. They'll spit on you, curse you and kill you. You don't want those people!" "How much? Jesus asked again. Satan looked at Jesus and sneered, "All your blood, tears and your life." Jesus said, "DONE!" Then Jesus paid the price. The pastor picked up the cage and walked from the pulpit. I will not use a old style case, if you use a old VW case make sure it is a daul relief case and use the high volume oil pressure relief springs never use a case without it being line bored wether for aircraft or car if going bigger than 1835 then for sure use a new case I prefere the aluminum case it is great insurance, Up in the air is not the time to second guess if done right. I had flown a reasonably decent pattern and was headed right for the numbers but the airspeed read 80. As I applied power to arrest the sink, I hit the ground and bounced. When I hit again, the gear collapsed and I became a sled. Stayed on the runway and, even though everything that wasn't fastened down flew all over the cockpit, I was not injured. The prop, of course, is kindling. The cowl was scuffed up slightly, the belly from the main spar forward was also significantly scuffed, and the firewall came loose on the top and sides. The fuel tank front mount kept the firewall on the plane. The landing gear was essentially undamaged. It did not collapse, as in -- retract. What happened was that all 8 of the nuts on the gear leg attach bolds were stripped off. That allowed the gear legs to fold sideways up into the wing which prevented a second bounce. Of course, the top skin on each wing was pierced on both sides of the main spar. If I was so inclined, I could bolt the gear legs back to the spring, replace a tire that got scuffed, and get on with the wood and glass repairs. However, I am not so inclined so I am now in the market for a set of Diehl tricycle gear, plus wheels and brakes, and a prop. A project, on the gear might be interesting. If anyone has something you think I could use, please contact me off the net at ankerst...@embarqmail.com. For the record, N774A is a single place KR 2 with a 1835 cc VW. (ran good but the revflow carb is too big) It had a Hegy 52x44 prop which was at 34-3600 rpm for the whole flight. Empty weight is 587 lbs and gross is 950. I remember speeds from 65 to 135 while I orbited HAO for about 40 minutes, trying to find the courage to try to get down. Remember, I was doing taxi tests and was no where near ready to fly --- obviously. I pretty much wasted all that time being very gentle trying to keep it in the sky when I should have been doing some actual test flying. Anyway, back to work again. I have long thought, and now I'm convinced, that these are sturdy little birds. With a couple miracles, we will be at the next gathering. Without miracles, I'll drive. Yes, the KR is an "easy to fly" airplane if the pilot is competent in an aircraft with the flying qualities of a KR. That being light on the controls and very maneuverable. Building a KR and then expecting to get your pilot license in it is not the route to go unless you can overcome some obstacles. 1. Your KR will need a 40 hour test phase flown off before you can carry a passenger. Who will do that? 2. It will be difficult to find an instructor that will give instruction in a home built / experimental. 3. Will your KR , with two on board, have flying qualities suitable for instruction? 4. Will your KR have controls set up to be an acceptable trainer? 5. Insurance? for flight training? Your best route is build your KR and, when the project is nearing completion, work on getting your license the normal route. Find a flying club or similar to cut cost of training. Have someone competent make the first several flights on the KR to insure it is performing properly. Get some time in a similar flying aircraft, check yourself out in the KR, and finish flying off the 40 hours. The KR is not a "hard to fly" airplane. In fact, I find it to be one of the most enjoyable flying airplanes I've flown in 1300+ hours of flight time. Any "competent" pilot that knows and respects it's flying qualities will have no trouble flying a KR. Good luck.. I had a great time this year and was able to do a little sight seeing just for myself. The trip to Florida with Chris and Dan was entertaining. I also can report that the demonstrated cross wind landing capabilitiy of a KR2S is 18 gusting to 27 and I did not have to go back to the runway to pick up parts either. Departure was even more thrilling, My mom asked me on the way to the airport this morning if I was scared - I said no, anxious- If I was scared I wouldn't be going. I didn't really check actual wind speed this morning but it sure felt like 20 gust to 30 @ 75cross. Anyway, Thanks to everyone that I met and to William, Grace, And especially Ed for putting up with us. I will try to remember names and hope to see more flyers soon. I loved the building of my plane and engine but I am living the dream of a child now and revel in it everyday. I hope that there are more out there like me that are working hard now. The short of the trip is another 15 hours on 357CJ pushing the total over 450 hrs. and well over 2000 miles this weekend. Blue skies, Joe Horton, Coopersburg, Pa. KR> airplanes, designs
I have been reading what you guys been talking about own designs and airplanes, KR-2s When I was In highschool I had talked to Ken Rand about building a twin engine as I have been always in love with twin engine aircraft, I bought a set of plans from Ken way back in mid 70's and still have them.I think I paid $25 KR-1 then I joined the Army and helped a friend build one then I got the news Ken was killed. I was stationed in Alaska. He kind of inspired me in aviation,I was a crazy teen- ager. I have helped build a couple KRs.I was told that someone had built a twin KR but was unstable don't know if true or not. I have worked on a design to build a twin KR with 1835 vw engines. If not for Ken I would not got in to aviation, the love he had for aviation I can't explain, I only talked to him three times but great talks, I am still hooked on the twin KR idea. I stayed in the Army for eight and half years to learn what I could about aviation I was a mechanic on CH47 Chinook helicopters then worked for Alaska Airlines (sea tac), I worked for Columbia Helicopters and Everts Airfuel ( Cargo express) in Fairbanks Ak, I worked on DC-6s, C46s, and a old Caribue aircraft I love old roundy round engine wasp 2800s and 2000s. Well I have talked enough. My name is Charles L. Brown. you all have a great day.

KR> RR Wing skins
James, I had a set of RR wing skins and when I talked to J. Rand, she told me to follow the KR2S plans, which also includes a urethane foam extension to the wing spars. She also said that the Dan Diehl video and his instructions on his web site would be very useful. Her main warning was to use epoxy because the pre-molded wingskins were made with epoxy. Diehl wingskins were made with vinyl ester resin, so he say use vinyl ester to attach his skins. J. Rand cautioned against using vinyl ester resin on her wingskins. Hi Phil: Yours is a reversing throttle. A non-reversing is a simple push handle or when the attachment is above the pivot point rather than below. I am switching my Revmaster from non-reversing to reversing for shorter/straighter/simpler cable routing, more leverage, and smoother operation. KR> Open Cockpit KR2?
Is anybody flying a KR2 open cockpit with a partial canopy? If I seal the back off with an extended backrest will it work, and fly right? I would want it to have have interchangeable canopy depending on our miserable Houston summer weather. Chuck
KR> Throttle
Thanks for the info on gear and open cockpit. I am doing the mains now before I take it out the first time. The nose gear is complete. Now I need to fill those big holes on the wing bottom (later). I think I may fly it open cockpit first, and hope I don't encounter adverse flight characteristics. It seems like the exposed extended seat back would cause a positive pitching moment. We'll see. I am currently completely changing out the throttle mechanism and controls. I have a Revmaster 2100. I still have not the found the reversing throttle quadrant that I like. I notice from photos several setups. Any suggestions for a reversing application? I have been though most of the catalogs. Perhaps this is the additional Oshkosh trip justification I need to sway the wife. Regards, Chuck

Hi group, I am new to the list. I just purchased a KR2 with retracts. I have read about the gear collapses, but I am not clear if they are mostly nose gear, mains, or both. Which is it? KR> gear legs
Here's a cut and paste from Dan's instructions, which are located on his website. http://www.diehlaero.com/ . He has underlined MUST in the instructions. KR-2 LANDING GEAR INSTRUCTIONS The composite landing gear is made from a 3-M product called Scotchply. The castings are made of aluminum alloy. The prototype was load tested to 2.5 G's, 1,250 lbs. On each main gear. This resulted in a 3 1/2" flexure which is 75% of ultimate bending. With this information and subsequent flight testing, the gear was lengthened 4". The increased leg length provides more ground clearance. To 3/4". This has resulted in a nice springy 3 G gear. Also, at this same time the gear legs were beefed up, the casting thickness was increased by 3/32". The Gear legs are shipped precut and the edges are chamfered. The taildragger conversion mounts the main gear on the forward side of the main spar with castings bolted on just outside the fuselage sides. The gear legs angle forward. The tri-gear mounts the gear legs on the aft side of the main spar with the legs angling back. The tail dragger version of the gear leg has a straight leading edge from top to bottom. The tri-gear version has a crook on both sides of the leg. The arrow points forward. Four pieces of biaxial cloth are provided with each kit. This cloth must be put on the legs before drilling holes. The cloth runs from top to bottom of each leg. Follow drawings. This cloth is installed to prevent leg twist during touchdown and braking. After the biaxial wraps have been installed, the brakeline housing needs to be built. Either Epoxy or vinylester resin will work fine. To enclose the brakeline, a large diameter soda straw can be "hot glued" to the edge of the gear leg below where it bolts to the casting. Once attached, two layers of fiberglass should be wrapped around the straw. This holds the straw in place and helps "fair the leg". (Note: On tri-gear versions, mount the straw on the forward side of the gear. On the tail dragger version, mount the straw on the aft side of the leg. Six AN-4-32A bolts mount the main casting to the spar. Two AN-4-16A and two AN-4-17A bolts join the leg to main casting. The axle casting is bolted to the leg with four AN-4-15A bolts. The axle is bolted to the axle casting with four AN4 bolts. (Not provided in kit.) The length will vary depending on the axle and type of brake available. Cleveland and Matco are the most common.
