KR> update
Hello builders, Some of you may have seen my KR-2S blog on the nVaero forum. I have removed it because their forum is not active, and has become full of spam lately. Steve at nVaero is a really nice guy and they have a pretty good company, so, it is nothing personal at all. I just think it's best for me to create my own website. I'm also looking forward to buy products from them. I'm writing you all this, just in-case some of you are wondering why my blog is no longer there. Joe Cygan KR-2S (5% done) North Texas

Rand Robinson has refused to give up the plans business to NVaero, and for a long time Steve at NV had to buy them at RR's price and send them to builders paying the shipping out of his pocket. For a little while he's gotten a very slight break from RR so that he's not losing money, but recently RR informed him they weren't going to let him handle plans anymore. So now we're back to the "hail Mary" sending of a money order to RR in hopes that some day she'll check the mail and send your plans to you. The address is given at http://www.fly-kr.com/ . I've always thought that buying plans from RR was the reasonable thing to do, but if you're in a tight spot and really need the plans, a jerk named Justin posted them to the web in early 2009, so they are floating around as a bit torrent or something, if you don't mind picking up a bunch of viruses in the search for them... KR> Any word on NVaero after airport flood?
Glad to hear your OK. You need to move your operation to North Texas where the rent is cheap. Joe Cygan From: I FLY KRsTo: KRnet Sent: Tue, January 4, 2011 1:23:56 AM Subject: RE: KR> Any word on NVaero after airport flood? Those pics pretty well sum up my past couple weeks. The large hangars midfield in the bottom of the horse shoe is where we were located. We ended up with about 9' of water. I received the call about 1:30 in the afternoon. After renting two 26' u-haul trucks and a flatbed, we worked until about 4:30 in the morning getting as much as we could. Both trucks were packed to the gills, KR-1 put on the flatbed, and the Clausing lathe and Bridgeport mill made it out. All the molds, much tooling and supplies, as well as 3 airframes remained. We came back a couple hours later and were turned away as water was already in our hangar. I was able to walk in today. About 2 - 3 inches of muck and mud remains. The KR-100, the new KR-2S fuselage, and a few molds, including a set of center section skins that are ready to be pulled from the molds were untouched by water. The new design light sport airframe we were building is shot so we will have to start over and probably will not make it to Sun-N-Fun with it like we had hoped. Most of the remaining mold were in the water but fortunately look like they will clean up well. There were a few tools and parts I thought had made it into the truck that were found in various places of the hangar. I had a new Bosch drill/ driver that apparently was left on one of our fabrication tables. Somehow it escaped unscathed and works perfect. It seems that particular table floated and never submerged. Our fuselage table and glass cutting table weren't so lucky. We will have to build new ones. We had been diligently working on the final plugs/ molds for the new AS-5046 airfoil, center section, and 009 tail group. I am happy to say those were all loaded and safely stowed away in the U-hauls. This is the second major flood in 5 years at Corona. The past couple years we had the threat of flood but it never happened. The Army Corps of Engineers had modified Prado Dam so many of us thought the flooding issue had been finally resolved so there was a false sense of security with most of us I think. Now that we are producing parts and kits for the KR, as a company we cannot afford this type of damage or losses. Just the move so far has cost us about $3500 and that does not include losses from parts/ machinery, or tooling. I figure the total hit will fall around $25k. In light of all this we have relocated our facility to Chino (CNO), which is about another 10 minute drive. Corona was about a 30 minute drive for us from home so now we are looking at least 40 minutes depending on traffic. There is a lot of activity at Chino and several businesses that will be beneficial to have access to. While I prefer Corona overall Chino is by the far the best choice from a business standpoint. The hangar is a bit smaller at the new location than what we had at Corona but we are still planning a build out with a classroom/ pilot lounge with a full bath and kitchenette for events or builder workshops. Once we are built out we will have a Saturday morning breakfast club for those interested in building their first few parts with factory support. New builders will be able to gain some hands on experience and build confidence to complete their projects. If any of you are ever in the area, feel free to stop in. It is always best to give us a call so we know to expect you. KR> Canopy Gluing- Epoxy
Actually, epoxy resin sticks poorly to acrylic and polycarbonate plastics. Most effective applications, are both epoxy and a mechanical means to lock in the plastic. I would use protruding slugs or the very least, lock it in mechanically. Joe Cygan KR-2S Texas From: Mark LangfordTo: KRnet Sent: Wed, December 22, 2010 11:47:58 AM Subject: Re: KR> Canopy Gluing- Epoxy Steve Phillabaum wrote: >>I have a Todd's KR canopy and I sanded in a good scratch finish in the >>area of the epoxy and then sandwiched in the conopy between glass on both >>sides uning areopoxy. I don't think I could get it appart without some >>damage. Let us know what he has to say.<< That'll work fine. I would think most epoxies would stick just fine to acrylic after it's been roughed up with rough sandpaper to give it some "teeth". I think this is even detailed in the Bengelis books. I suspect those having problems didn't do the roughing part. I wondered about the quality of that bond when I did mine the same way (overlapping the acrylic by about 1.5"-2" all the way around, but there is zero sign of delaminiation anywhere. T-88 may not be the best choice because it's not very viscous and may not soak into as many of the scratches, but I'd bet it's still a pretty good bonding agent for glass. I used Aeropoxy, and can tell you that it works for sure, at least up to 240 mph. Another key is HOW you do it...you need to sandwich the acrylic on both sides with glass to put it in a sort of "double shear" rather than glass on only one side, eliminating a "tension only" kind of failure where the fiberglass can just peel away from the acrylic due to some wierd loading condition. I think that's just good common sense though... KR> Ventral Fin
Hi Stephen, Great idea about adding a "ventral fin" to your aircraft. It Would be interesting to know, what it would do to the vertical and longitudinal axis as far as stability is concerned. The only smaller aircraft that I'm aware of having them are the Cap 10. Where are you going to be locating the ventral fin and how large will it be? BTW, you have an amazing aircraft and I can not wait to come and see it. Joe Cygan KR-2S From: "Teate, Stephen"To: KRnet Sent: Fri, December 3, 2010 11:40:37 AM Subject: RE: KR> Ventral Fin "I have not heard of anyone doing this, but has anyone put a ventral fin on a KR?" I have indeed added a ventral fin to the aft end of my fuselage. I did this for two reasons, to provide an aerodynamic fairing for my tail tie down eyelet and to provide a fairing for my "bumper wheel". I have a Subaru and am using a belly scoop for the radiator. With the exhaust flap at the wide open position it would have been possible for me to drag the flap on the runway if I didn't add the wheel. I really like the way it turned out but yes when I fly I will probably be the first KR with 4 wheels. Also, since my CG is going to be forward it will probably never be needed for stall behavior modification but it is nice to know it's there. Then again, maybe it is a good thing I have one as I intend to fly high and I would hate to be the first KR to "depart" like I have seen some grossly overloaded F-16's do! I don't have a video, but I've got one "full power full stall" permanently fried into my brain. Left wing drops, plane drops and rolls inverted, accelerates toward the ground at an incredible rate, everything in the plane sticks to the top of the canopy and ends up in the tail. Fortunately I was at about 5000' when I started. This was early in my 40 hour test phase, and I didn't realize the implications of a full power "accelerated" stall. I was watching the airspeed indicator, rather than the ball on the turn and bank indicator, which was a real mistake. I don't know how many g's I pulled getting out of that dive, but losing the wings certainly occured to me in the middle of all that. That's when I bought the g-meter. I'm not trying to say that a KR is any more dangerous than any other plane. I'm only writing this so others that are as inexperienced as I was will take full-power stalls more seriously than I did. Why would you even need to know how and at what speed it stalls at full power? Consider too steep a climbout on takeoff and you'll understand. Now I have a very healthy respect for that flight regime, and I avoid the possibility at all costs. KR> Hello
Hello Stephen, I originally bought the plans when I was nineteen years old almost twenty-four years ago in 1987 from Rand Robinson engineering in Huntington Beach, I was living in California then. At the time, Nancy and Janette were there and Kevin Kelly was working on his KR100. I was able to sit in it, what a great plane. Well, Not to bore you, but another twelve years went by before I bought the KR-2S supplement plans in 1999 and they pretty much have sat in a box until now. The good news is that I have a family of four, a wonderful wife and a great business. Now I'm ready to start building. Hopefully the building process wont take that long:) BTW, I live in Denton Texas. I plan on building a single seat KR2S with an 0-200. I will more than likely stretch it several more inches and plan on using the AS5046 airfoil.
