So, the question is, who owns Great Plains now, and where are they located?
KR> Great plains
Don Grow and Art Box are the owners of Great Plains. Founder Steve Bennett sold to Marty Roberts, who has sold the business to Don and Art. They are located in Afton, OK. I have been to their shop, so I know they are up and running. Maybe not as smooth as they would like but still up and running. Don, Art, and Marty will be at Oshkosh (they won't have a booth this year) but Marty will have his 5th wheel and that will be the meeting area for Great Plains. Here is the web site for their company: http://www.greatplainsas.com/ http://www.greatplainsas.com/scorder.html Great Plains Aircraft Supply Co. Tel 402 493 6507 info at greatplainsas.com Even though Marty isn't a partner he is still involved with Great Plains. Marty, my friend Mike Arnold and I took one of my VW motors to GP and we re-built my 1835. I think you'll be pleased with the new owners, especially when the rough spots get smoothed out. They are expanding their inventory and getting the right people in the right places. I hope this info helps. I'll continue to do business with them in the future! I love the former and current owner of Great Plains. They are both very good people, but I understand. I did a fair amount of my VW business with Revmaster. Joe Horvath and his staff are first rate. You will not experience that kind of frustration when doing business with them. In this business, they are one of the few gems. Most of us know that Marty Roberts took over GPASC about a year ago, but it changed hands again a few months ago, so I'm told. It turns out that there's a lot to running this international business, and it's quite an effort, even for two people. The current owner is still climbing the learning curve, and is likely buried with a lot more business than he expected... Mark Langford ML at N56ML.com http://www.n56ml.com

KR> Great Plains electronic ignition
"The Compufire electronic ignition on my 2180 VW from Great Plains uses 0.6 to 7.9 amps, idle to wide open throttle, as displayed on my instrument panel ammeter. The more sparks it makes, the more juice it takes." I may be mis-remembering, but Steve Bennett once told me it was just the opposite. Idling/low RPM drew more juice from the battery than when turning at higher RPM's. Mike KSEE The #1 Worst Carb Ever? If you have been following the thread about the wrong resistors in the kit, there were also two capacitors that did not correspond with the parts list. Well, after assembling it with the parts provided as best as I could, IT DOESN'T WORK. Mike, I hope you take no offence to my suggestions or comments. I mean to judgment. I find that many times when I get stuck on something that I simply need to step away for a little bit or get another set of eyes on it. I then commonly find some minor thing I over looked. In case like this I may find a solder joint that is cold or a solder pad that has lifted from the circuit board or even a zener diode that I inadvertently installed backwards. Let me know what you find. I saw some discussion on the Great Plains strobes this past week. I'm on the digest and don't catch up on my reading very quickly. So sorry if this is late. I purchased two Great Plains Strobe kits and didn?t have any trouble getting them to work. I?ve added a new page to my web site at _www.robert7721.com_ (http://www.robert7721.com/) to show how I did it. I assembled both kits then installed them into a Radio Shack ?Project Box?. The only thing I remember doing different was regarding the Blue Trigger Coil (T3). I did not like the flimsy wire on it, so when I mounted it to the bread board I mounted it in a bed of epoxy to make sure it was secure. Both kits worked on the 1st try, so I guess I didn?t have to do anything that unusual. My strobes are still not mounted in the airplane just yet. I am currently working on the landing light installation. Rob Schmitt _robert7721@aol.com_ (mailto:robert7...@aol.com) KR2S N1852Z Kansas City, MO

This is very interesting information for us VW guys. If you can trust this information to be acturate, this is a major technology breakthrough. Although it seems that the technology is not that new, it may be just now be being applied to the aircraft world. I have always wondered about the roughness of the castings of the VW jugs and thought the billet stuff would be better but this information far exceeds what I would have expected. It looks like these jugs answer all of the needs, more power, better heat disapation longer TBO and so on. Does anyone out there have experience and real world data on this? And then it makes me wonder. Could a guy build a better VW using a scat block, the right cam grind and crank combined with these jugs and get a better, stonger VW in tyoe 1 or type 2 form? KR> Great Plains Brakes & Azusa Wheels
Dennis: I am in the process of installing GP Brakes on my plane. It is necessary to file out the Draft angle in the caliper holders to accept the calipers, that and centering up the axles is the tough part. I also had to take the adapters that attach the rotor to the %" Azusa wheels to a machine shop to shave a few thousandths off the diameter so it would fully seat properly on to the wheel. You may or may not have to do this as it cis so small that it could be a tolerance problem because all og these parts are cast Aluminum. KR> Great Plains Brakes
Folks I disassembled my Great Plains master cylinders today. There are no relief ports or valves anywhere and no resevoirs. It is a simple plunger/o-ring with an internal spring to return it to its fully out position. If completely filled and bled, there is no room for heat expansion thus the slave must move out and lock on the disk. Cylinder orientation becomes irrelevant. So, either one must find a fluid that doesn't expand at all under heat, or the system must be under filled so that the master plunger can still move out if needed. I'm suggesting about 1/8" should be enough play.Full plunger movement is about 5/8" but is limited by the smaller distance that the pad moves. Problem is that the space will inevitably fill with air leading to diminished brake effectiveness. Can't see any other solution short of a redesign however, any other ideas? KR> Great Plains Brakes
Folks I have an intermittent problem with my Great Plains brakes. These have separate hydraulic master cylinders and disc pads for each side. After they have been standing for a while they tend to lock up to the point where I cannot push the aircraft around. This due to the pad somehow taking up slack in the system and is maybe related to hot temperatures through the Australian summer days and cooling at night. I can release the pressure by admitting air through the bleeder nipple or alternatively forcing the pad plunger back but this doesn't seem to be the correct thing to do. Does anyone know of a solution to this or suffer from it? Is it a known problem? Can anyone describe how the mster cylinder works internally to adjust for fluid expansion and temperature. If there are no simple solutions from you guys I'll email Steve Bennett. I'm worried if they decide to apply themselves in flight that I'll be fishtailing or nose overing more than I usually do on landing. Sometimes the geometry of the pedal / master cylinder hookup can create problems. Check the pedal travel through their full range and insure there is no brake application at the master cylinder. My brakes / pedals are a single unit so I don't have any geometry problems but I found I was dragging a bit of brake sometimes because of the angle my long legs approach the pedals. I glued a piece of 1/2" half round wood trim to the top of each pedal to space my feet back from the brake pedal and that solved the problem. Good luck Larry Flesner
