KR> Gathering finances
Nettlers and Gathering attendees, I was concerned that with the bad weather and lower turnout this year we'd be a bit short on the finances. Good news! With the help of two generous donations, one corporate and one anonymous , and the generosity of the banquet attendees, it was a break even year. Starting balance was $4330 and ending balance is $4375. I haven't double checked any of my entries or math but I'm confident it is close. I'll send a complete report to John for posting in the next few days to show all income and expense. Thanks to all that helped make this year a financial success. Larry Flesner

Made it home but my plane had to stay in Marked Tree, Ark. Made the stop due to low ceilings south of Memphis. Small directional incident on landing took me through a small dig between the runway and taxiway. Only damage was to the propeller. Will need a new one of those. The crop dusting business "Marked Tree Flying Service" owner Jerry Teague put my plane in his hangar and gave me a car to get home. Told me he had all the tools I would need. AND gave me a clock to make an ornament out my broken prop. WOW! AVIATION PEOPLE ARE THE BEST!!! Brad Stone Sent from my iPhone

Oh, and I forgot Joe Horton won "Longest Distance", for flying 733 (statute) miles to the Gathering. He had to leave early due to inclement weather moving in, which would have prevent him from getting back home any earlier than Monday, if then. It was great to see Joe again, as well as everybody else in the KR family... Mark Langford ML at N56ML.com http://www.n56ml.com

Joe Horton wrote: >> How about a report of events and banquet since I had to get outta there early Friday...<< Awards were: Best Paint - Joe Weber Best Firewall Forward - Brad Stone Best Panel and Interior - Mark Langford Best KR - Mark Langford People's Choice - Joe Weber I took 700 pictures (which is how I "remembered" the awards), and will get a web page done sometime in the next week, with captions to detail what went on. I think it was a great time for all. Rob Schmitt flew at least three guys, if not more, one of which was working toward a first flight soon. It was another great Gathering, despite the low turnout due to weather. Charlie Becker gave a very detailed and informative presentation on the certification paperwork to get an Experimental airplane signed off, as well as the Repairman's Certificate. Scott Wick gave an interesting "History of Wicks Aircraft" presentation. One of the things he mentioned was that the US gov't forbid them from making organs in order to conserve wood, so they temporarily went into the aircraft business building wings for some aircraft, as well other war support equipment. There was also a presentation by Stewart Systems paint. I missed that one, given my lack of concern about painting matters. Thanks to Joe Horton and Mark Jones for leaving early, as well as Robert Pesak and Mike Sylvester for not bringing their planes. Otherwise, I surely wouldn't have won Best KR! Hey Guys, I'm guessing from the post below that Rob was the loosing bidder and will be hosting the gathering next year. How about a report of events and banquet since I had to get outta there early Friday and it makes me home sick not knowing what all went on and missing everyone. If it is at KLXT I have my flight plan already and only have to plug in the date. It will be about 1012 miles for me. I guess I won't make that on one tank of fuel. Joe Horton, N357CJ Paul it was our pleasure, and educational. Thanks for your help from our talks prior to the gathering and all through it. Can't wait for both of us to fly to Lee Summit next year. ___

KR> Gathering 2016
After literally years of prep and anticipation, I will be unable to attend or fly my KR-2 to the Gathering for 2016. My KR-2 waits patiently while I get myself ready to fly. Just had the left eye cataract surgery yesterday. Right eye had its turn three weeks ago and healing nicely. Amazing how we can take this marvelous gift of sight for granted - until it threatens to leave. Next year, whether Illinois or Kansas, I will be there. Speaking of "root beer", I will secure two cases of "root beer", one light and one dark, tomorrow to be used for refreshments at the camp site. I also secured a donation to cover most of the cost of the price kick for the steaks. I hated to tell Donny no as we are his favorite group and he wanted to go all out for us. Anyway, the cost is not an issue, just don't belly ace to me that your steak wasn't done EXACTLY the way you like it. Eat it, like it, and have a good time. :-) You will be asked when purchasing your banquet ticket if you request a steak or just the buffet to give Donny a count to toss on the grill. Gathering attendees, I want to remind everyone that the cutoff to order hats and shirts was last Friday. The couple of "pre-registers" since that date and ordering shirts / hats are covered by the few extra I've ordered. I can't guarantee that for those that pre-register after receiving this e-mail. Shirts are $25 and hats are $15 For John B.: Please leave a blank line on the attendee list between those that have pre-registered and those that register after this date. That will indicate to me those that are guaranteed a hat / shirt and those that are eligible to purchase an extra at the Gathering if available. I'll try to treat everyone fairly. Thanks.. With just weeks till the KR Gathering, I touched base today with Chris Collins, the airport manager, to confirm final arrangements. For those that have not attended a Gathering at Mt.Vernon I'll lay out some information points to keep in mind: - Restaurant on the field in the terminal building serving lunch and dinner buffet with breakfast items during the Gathering. Donnie Wilkie and staff will treat you like old friends. Give them your business when possible. They will also cater the Saturday evening awards banquet. The banquet will be held in the terminal commons area at 7:00PM Saturday evening. - KR fliers: We all enjoy fly-bys but limit your pass to no closer to the terminal than the taxiways. Keep in mind the AirEvac facility on the airport and respect any emergency operations such as picking up KR drivers out of local bean fields. No low passes over the campground or AirEvac facility, main runway only. - Chris is checking the possibility of us using a computer projector owned by a friend of the airport. - Camping: Great camp site by the lake within walking distance of the terminal and the hangar where bathroom and showers are available. At the last Gathering we actually had people camping in the hangar. The pavilion at the camp ground has been updated by an Eagle scout with new roof and other upgrades. For those camping, alcohol is not allowed on the airport but "party beverages" are tolerated if done so responsibility. Enough said? A few electrical hookups were available in the past for motor homes and large campers behind the FBO hangar. I forgot to check but they are probably still available, first come , first served. Wood for fire will be available at the pavilion. - Something to sell? bring it and we'll set up a table(s) to display your ware. Tables available in terminal commons for photo albums and other display items. Bring anything you'd like to share. - It's tough asking someone to set at the registration table all day to sell hats/shirts/ banquet tickets so I will be limiting the hours to 10:00AM till 3:00PM. I'll ask John to update the web page with that info. Name tags will be available so please use them so we can put names with faces. Please purchase your banquet tickets by Saturday noon so we have an accurate head count for Donnie. _ The location for the 2017 Gathering will be voted on at the Saturday evening banquet. We presently have one offer but anyone is allowed to make a proposal at the banquet. Want to host a Gathering? Suggestions are welcome but only serious proposals / presentations will be considered. - Forums will be held in the conference room in the terminal (seating for 60+) or in the terminal commons area, location to be announced at the Gathering. - Use caution on the ramp for aircraft movements and give them clear space. Remember, us tail dragger pilots have a hard time seeing you, stand well clear. - Very friendly FBO. Walk down and thank them for their support. - A portion of an 11,900 square foot hangar should be available for the KR's at no cost to fliers unless something unforeseen comes up. Chris will move heaven and earth to make it available. I know I'm forgetting something so I'll post it when I think of it. This is my 25th KR Gathering of the last 26. I missed the one in California after turning back in Northwest Arkansas. Joe Horton continued on from there to leave an oil trail all the way to the west coast. :-) Mark Langford was unable to even leave his home airport on that run. Questions? Gathering attendees, Tomorrow ( 8/20/2016) is the cutoff date to order hats and shirts. Place your order by going to www.krnet.org and click on the Gathering link at the very top of the page. Just one more month till the Gathering at Mt.Vernon. Anyone wanting a shirt or hat for this years Gathering will need to get the order in by the cutoff date of August 20, just 10 days from now. I was much more flexible in the past but my supplier (my next door neighbor) is easing in to retirement and my options are limited. Also, unlike past years, I will not be taking orders at the Gathering and mailing shirts / hats. I will have a few extra of common sizes at the Gathering but can't guarantee having a hat or shirt your size unless you pre-order. If you order a hat / shirt and are unable to attend the Gathering, I will sell your order at the Gathering. Sorry to get so persnickety in my old age but nine years of tracking / shipping/ etc. orders for hats and shirts outside the Gathering dates has proven not to be worth my time and effort. So, if you want a hat or shirt, order (pre-register at http://www.bouyea.net/KRGathering/ ) by August 20 or send me an e-mail ( flesner at frontier.com ) with shirt size by August 20. John, if possible, plan to have all registrations posted on the 20th and I will use that as a final count. Thanks... Larry Flesner flesner at frontier.com

The coffee mugs are handed > out as part of the registration fee, so everyone that registers gets one. ++ That's an idea I'd not heard before and it sounds like a good one and probably financially feasible. It would sure make the hosts decisions easier. Would we use the "judged best KR" or the "peoples choice" KR? My KR did win the "judged-Best KR" in 2010 so maybe the "tradition" has just begun. Free coffee mugs to all registrants might be a bit pricey for our budget. A limited registration fee with a free mug and hat might work. We'll see what dust this blows up and how it settles. So...does anybody out there have the capability and the time to copy these VHS videos to MPEG (or some other format that makes sense) so we can put them on KRnet for download? There are five tapes: Covington in 1988, Kentucky Dam in 1991, Covington in 1992, Covington in 1993, and 1997 in Perry. Any volunteers for this job? The only rule is that you have to do it somewhat promptly, like in the couple of months. You can't be a useless slug like me and impede progress! I believe these were all shot by Video Bob. I concur with having the 2016 at MVN. I have started to work plans for possibly hosting one at Lees Summit MO (LXT) in 2017, but I would not be prepared for 2016. Our EAA chapter is on board, but I still need to work with the airport manager to make sure they support it. We have pretty good EAA chapter facilities - hangers, meeting room, kitchen facilities.. Camping on the airport may not be allowed which would detract from the event. I will be glad to help Larry run this one in 2016, it will prepare me for 2017. Understood that this all would require a vote at the end of the 2016 one, hopefully others are thinking of hosting one as well. Competition is a good thing. Rob Schmitt N1852Z Kansas City, MO -Original Message- From: Mark Langford via KRnet To: KRnet Cc: Mark Langford Sent: Thu, Sep 24, 2015 7:49 pm Subject: KR> 2016 KR Gathering location...MVN? KRnetHeads, At McMinnville it was agreed that it may not be fair to the community for so few people to vote on the location of the next Gathering, and that a location (or more, perhaps) should be presented to the KRnet community, since that's where the majority of the KR community exists. It's worth mentioning that given several opportunities, nobody volunteered to host the 2016 Gathering, although Larry Flesner was prepared to volunteer Mt. Vernon, IL at the McMinnville Gathering, until this Internet vote was decided upon instead. So to me, we could just say "the next Gathering will be at Mt. Vernon, period", and I suspect that would echo the sentiment of the majority. But if anybody wants to volunteer to host it, we can add it to the mix and put it to a vote (Survey Monkey comes to mind), or if nobody else comes forward by the end of the weekend, we'll call it MVN and move on. Keep in mind the responsibilities and expectations associated with hosting the Gathering are not trivial. See Larry's short list from several weeks ago, below: ___ Anyone considering hosting a KR Gathering needs to consider the following items. Some are requirements and some just make for a better event. - The desire to act as host for up to 150 people from all points of the country and possible international visitors. - Ability to plan and organize multiple functions for a large group, i.e. housing, meals, meetings, awards, banquet, merchandise sales, etc. - Complete co-operation and support of the local airport and the community. - Facilities: airport with multiple runways would be nice, not required, non towered airport preferred, hangar facilities for KR's a plus, ramp area large enough to handle KR's and visitors, terminal with restrooms and meeting rooms, restaurant on field a big plus, camping on airport a major plus. Not every airport is "ideal" for a Gathering but many airports are adequate. Your desire to host can overcome other facility shortcomings. None of this should discourage anyone from wanting to host a Gathering if you have the desire and adequate facilities. The KR crowd can have a good time anywhere as long as their basic needs are met. The KR crowd can have a good time anywhere as long as their basic needs are met. http://bouyea.net/KRGathering/index.html That was sure a great picture. I can't recall who it was that went through the trouble of getting us all set up for that photo but thank you again, whoever you are, for having such skill and patience. Also see Marc Baca's excellent collage at: https://vimeo.com/50812971 That 2012 Mt. Vernon Gathering was perhaps the last one where we had what's left of the early KR movers and shakers. Dan Diehl, Jeannette, Steve & Linda Bennett, Ken Cottle, Glover, Jim Faughn, Dan Heath, Mark Jones. I know I'm leaving out a few names of the early KR people who attended that Gathering but my memory isn't serving me well. I think Tommy Waymack was there along with Virgil Salisbury and others. In that picture Ken Cottle is standing second row to the right next to the KR-1? he built that has served me so well. This KR incidentally is the one used in Dan Diehl's wing skin installation video. It was Dan in fact that bestowed upon it the designation of "KR-1?". I think that was the last of the truly great KR Gatherings simply because some of those who attended that one won't be attending any more. It's been miserably hot and humid in SoCal since I got back from Oregon and except for a quick 45 minute trip to Big Bear a few days ago I've just been hanging out in front of the fans reading old KR newsletters. It might surprise some to know that Dan Heath and Mark Jones have been building KR's since 1990 or before. Jones has built at least two and Dan two, maybe three? I was also amazed to find Russ Barnett's little jewel of a KR that took top honors in 2012 . . . amazed to find a picture of it in a newsletter from the early 90's! Eh? Russ brought that KR in on a trailer to the 40th Anniversery Gathering in 2012 and I thought it was a new build. It was the most meticulously perfect-in-every-detail KR I'd ever seen - something to be featured behind glass at Cartier or Abacrombie & Fitch. I'm wondering now if it's ever flown. It's been around a lot longer that I thought, that's for sure. We can sure learn a lot from the old newsletters. There's a newsletter dated 1991 with an article by Jerry Price who, with one of his pilot sons Ian, attended McMinnville. We did a prop balance on his Stinson 108. The history in these newsletters is priceless, as is the KRNET archive with its truly excellent search function. I took quite a few pictures...so many that it will take a while to sort them out and turn them into a web page, but I'll try to get that done in the next few days. As for awards, they were mostly split between Jeff Scott and Kim Niebauer, although there are definitely some honorable mentions, such as Roger Bulla's newly minted plane. They were all very close in terms of quality. I also got air-to-air shots of all the KRs visiting (except for Mike's...he was not around for that), and we owe John Bouyea for that photo opportunity. It was a well-done Gathering. Many thanks to Dan and John for pulling off a great Gathering. I haven't done anything regarding the Gathering photos because we've been riding around Oregon and Washington national parks for the last week, ending up with Mt St. Helens "national monument" yesterday. That was quite interesting. It had recovered amazingly well from the photos I remember from the news way back in 1980...just gray moonscape with zillions of tree trunks laid out like match sticks...all pointing away from the blast zone. It looks a lot better now, and it's good to see how nature manages to recover from that kind of event. More on that (much later) when I do a web page on that vacation... I felt it necessary to put the info on the net because of the situation it created. In spite of Steve's comment "Your "situation" is a joke and created by certain persons with their own agenda", his procrastination left Dan and John with no idea what funds they had to work with until shortly before the Gathering. It left people thinking we were short of funds and generated discussions at the Gathering about incorporating, having elected officers, people feeling obligated to donate additional funds, etc. I don't consider that "situation" to be a joke and felt everyone concerned needed to know the facts so we could make some rational decisions concerning future Gatherings. And yes, at this point, if there are any future communications, they can be handled off line. As a member of the steering committee, I hope to have open, honest, and timely communication for future Gatherings. Larry Flesner

Could I have sent >them along sooner, probably so if I would've done the final breakdown sooner. ++ I informed you early in the year that the funds were available any time you determined how much you needed. You requested them on 7/12/2014 at 2:22PM. I informed you two hours later (4:11PM) that the check would be in the mail that weekend or on Monday. You could have had the funds in March if you had requested them. It's my understanding that the same communications did not take place between you and Dan and that a check showed up just weeks before this years Gathering. Waiting nearly a year to do a report of $4000 of Gathering funds and mailing the check (as stated above) , seems less than responsible. I'm certainly not critical of you coming up a bit short, it happens year to year. My primary concern was your lack of communication with the host of this years Gathering. The situation created has the KR community jumping through hoops suggesting solutions to problems I really don't think the group has. A bit of organizing and a healthy dose of responsibility is all that is needed, IMHO. I regret having to call you out on the handling and reporting of the Gathering funds but a more responsible approach on your part to that responsibility would have avoided it ever becoming an issue. I had hoped that you would have handled the situation in a more mature manner, especially when communicating with a group you hope to do business with, but I have no control with that. If I am wrong with any of the facts I have stated, please advise and I will publicly apologize to you and to the group. Until then I stand by my post. Larry Flesner

Whatever makes you happy Larry. I left a phone message and email for contact but didn't get a response so was initially going to send it to Mark L. Ask him if you like. I found John's address so sent it to him as I had no follow up contact if there was any concern. He had it approx 30 days before the gathering. I've already stated it could have been done sooner but I just didn't. It sat in the same lock box since the last gathering and until I could finish the last couple orders, "which I still have three hats that I paid for and not the gathering fund". Your "situation" is a joke and created by certain persons with their own agenda. I had spoken to Mark on several occasions about the fund and it certainly was not in question as to if it would be sent that I am aware of. I mentioned to him more than once about trying to get a chance to finish it up. I did have to locate some receipts that were left in the hangar. I'm really not too broken up with your opinion of my maturity or responsibility.
