I was at a workshop last year where one person was putting finishing touches
to her Ascot hat. If I remember the conversations correctly the hats were
made for an exhibition that was on for some time, including during Ascot,
but I don't think that the hats were worn at Ascot.

Christine Mirecki has two, made from silk.
Her web page is at:
http://www.8ung.at/mirecki/
Look for the English link at top left . Click on the wavy pink lace with
the title 'Colours and Lace' to see a sample of the contents, including a
tiny picture of the shawl. Use the arrow to go back to the books page (back
in the browser doesn't work) and then click on 'Triangular Shawl' which has
a rather larger picture of a different shawl.

Wow - that is so lovely - and much prettier than mine. Thanks for the compliment.

[lace] 6 Corners & Erdmute Wesenbergs Ecken (Pt de Lille, Liebenau und Erzgebirge)

2004-03-14 Thread Barry & Joyce Moes
Hello Lacemakers,

I have been contemplating doing my proifieciency with the Australian Lace
Guild in Point Ground.
I have to be able to execute 6 different types of corners and as part of my
research I have tried to translate pages 6 & 7 of the "Ecken" book.
I wonder if any translation exists already?
As far as I can see E.W. has covered the 3 basically different type of
corners, and any others are variations on Abb. 2 on page 6.
Do any spiders have any thoughts on PG corners and their classifications.

[lace] arachne hat raffle winner

2004-03-14 Thread Bev Walker
Hi everyone
ok this is a bit earlier than March 15 'my time' but I remembered I'll be
away from the computer tomorrow.

My hat has chosen its next owner! I received 14 names and put them in
the arachne hat itself to sort of 'simmer' for a while - and the person
nearest the hat (my DH) has just drawn the winner...

David Collyer.

May you wear it well David.

Thanks everyone for playing along.
bye for now

  Hello all spiders,
Some days ago someone posted on the list the web address for the Arachne
  @ spider lace pattern.
Watching the nice pattern that Jacqui Southworth worked in Honiton Lace,
I thought the possibility of designing one in Spanish braid lace "Witch

  You can see it at:

This lace pattern always will remain in my mind as I worked it, while
listening to the radio the disaster that this last week suffered my

I have created it to be shared with all the spiders and it is free to be
  downloaded as a PDF file.

Enjoy it! and my best regards.

I too am going to the Tonder Lace Festival. I'm looking forward to
meeting everyone! How will we know who's who?

I would also like to see the exhibition in Copenhagen, could Avril
please gives us the information again. I promise to write it down this
time. Can't believe how forgetful I can get already.

How many of us will be in Tonder?

[lace] Lace Guild Website update

2004-03-14 Thread Jean Leader
We have just mounted an update to The Lace Guild's web page with
extracts and a pattern from the January issue of 'Lace'.

One of the reasons for posting mag extracts on the web is that one
can use more colour than the magazine can, and this update takes full
advantage of that with colour photos of some of Pat Rowley's
exquisite Victorian fans and of some very stylish lace hats that
Bristol Lace Group made for Ladies Day at Ascot (although we're not
sure that they wore them there).

Jean Peach is someone I really miss hearing from on a
regular basis! Another person who has stepped back to
reading but not writing - and for the same reason - is Jeri

own contributions for the same reason, but don't really
consider that much of a loss to the list.

Is there any way we can lure you (and other former

[lace] portrait of lacemaker

2004-03-14 Thread Catherine Barley
Lori the Lacefairy

-Original Message-
I have a watercolour painting of a frail old lacemaker. She is
obviously English with her bolster pillow on a wooden tripod stand and
her spangled bobbins. She is sitting in front of her cottage with a
background of hills and moors, and is working on a broad edging, but the
pattern isn't clear. She is wearing a black "bowler" type of hat and
with this hat, I was wondering if anyone can tell me which part of
England this might be.

I visited your web site and recognised the lady in question. There is yet
another version of this lady and it is a coloured pastel portrait done by my
husband in in 1971. Sheila Perrin of SMP suggested that he had prints made of
it, as she was sure that it would be popular and Holly van Sciver did have
some of them for sale some years back.

I wrote an article which was published in the October 1995 edition of Lace
issue No 80 with Illustrations of the original black & white photograph (which
is the same as yours) and which comes from a book published by Odhams Press
entitled 'The British Countryside in Pictures'. The book is divided into four
sections and the lady in question is depicted in a black & white photograph in
the section 'Rural Crafts and Occupations' and is decribed as an old cottage
worker from Lavendon, Bucks. My copy of the book was re-printed in 1946, so
there was obviously an earlier edition.

If you don't have a copy of Lace issue 80 and are interested, I would be happy
to send it to you privately.
