[lace] Sandi Woods Book
Hi Jean, I got the new catalogue from Batsford and the book was mentioned in at at a discount of 3 pounds. However I did get my copy from SMP (just a satisfied customer) and it arried yesterday. If todays printers would have still used ink I would say that Batsford skimps on the amount of ink they used for printing. The print is very light (bright), I can't find the right word for it. It does strain the eyes a bit. The working diagrams are a bit small to follow. I don't know how they will be enlarged. I got already a few nice ideas of how to use the patterns. Otherwise it is a lovely book but just leafing through it isn't a book report. Re: [lace] Sandi Woods Book
I found this to be true of another book I bought this summer! Astrid Hansen's new book, Femten Bredere: Tonderkniplinger also has diagrams that have very lightly drawn lines in bright colors... IOW, hard to read (and hard to reproduce as well, I would imagine. This particular book just sold on eBay for $88 !! Since it's a current book, and sells for 33 Euro, I can't imagine why anyone would spend that much on it!! I'm suspecting that publishers are trying to make it harder for people to copy from a friend's book (or a library book...), but for those of us who own our books and don't like to break the spine while we use the diagram, making copies is the best way to do it. And that is perfectly legal, but now it's probably going to be more difficult. [lace] Sandi Woods Book
Hi, I bought Sandi's book from SMP lace at a lace fair early Sept and it is wonderful - particularly the ideas on how to mix and match the shapes to make a totally different design. In my copy, I found it strange that the instruction pages at the back had one page with diagrams in blue ink and the next page is black and alternated like this all the way through. Throughout the book I noticed this in places too. Do you think this was intentional or a 'printer's error ? [lace] Re: Jugendstil lace..
Hello Robin, Thank you for clearing the terms. So it is more logical. But people I spoke with and still articles I read about Jugendstil, Art Deco and so on had always only one word and this was confusing for me. Because, how to wrote, after the floral style the geometric came. Yesterday I mentioned floral designs which aren't from Dagobert Peche. He made more figural designs but also floral ones and sometimes a bit like fairy tales but in a new way. Some works of him remember on the lace pictures of Elena Holeczyová. But how astonishing, it' s the same time and they had a bit the same studies. He was a all round talent he made fashion products, designs for textiles, he decorated the room fitting for a fashion show. After coming back from Zurich he had made designs for furnitures, tapestry, embroidery, lace shortly said everything. I was astonished myself about the text under the article and found out that they are wrong. I am sorry for that and you can believe me that I looked several times before I wrote. This designs are from Johann Hrdlicka who worked for the K.K.Zentralspitzen Kurs in Vienna at the time of Jugenstil. He, his wife Mathilde and some others, f. e. Franziska Hofmanninger, Fritz Letniansky, are as important as Peche for that period. Hope i didn't wrote to much about this theme but I persoaly like it. [lace] International Arts and Crafts Exhibition at V A
As there has been a discussion about Art Nouveau, Art Deco and the Arts and Crafts. I thought there might be some who would be interested in the exhibition being held at the V A next year International Arts and Crafts 17 March - 24 July 2005 It says on their web site that the Arts and Crafts Movement was arguably one of the most far reaching and influential design movements of modern times. here is their web site http://www.vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/future exhibits/artscrafts/index.html There is a write up on the site about the exhibitions, yes there will be textiles, not what they are though. Re: [lace] Re: Jugendstil lace..
Some of Joanne Hrdlicka's designs (for lace) are/were published by The Lace Guild, Designs for Modern Lace; A facsimile of Entwurge fur moderne Spitzen first pub. 1902. Is the book still available? IMO it's one of the best lace design sources around. They are not 'patterns' as such with pinholes marked etc but drawn designs which can be interpreted into a variety of lace techniques, but they are all Art Nouveau/Jugendstil. Re: [lace] Femten Bredere: Tonderkniplinger
I bought the book and Clay is right you can't copy the diagrams. I am however going to copy the prickings onto something besides RED and they picked a garrish red at that. I think they need to pick a color more kinder and gentler to the eye. Besides prickings wear out. I am absolutely fascinated with this lace, especially the edgings. The 'guipure' styles, with many bobbins - I'd like to try those too. I was just looking through my copy quickly as I thought there was reference to Dagobert Peche, and an illustration - did not see it right away (another book, perhaps, or I will need to look more carefully). bye for now Bev in Sooke BC (west coast of Canada) Dear Bev and others interested, There is a photo of a bobbin lace designed by Dagobert Peche in the Austria-Spitz book I reviewed on Arachne on August 31st. It is on page 32. On the next page, there is (in English) a short write-up about Peche which gives the locations of a very limited number of laces designed by Peche. Leopoldine Winkler's bibliography in this book contains 15 entries, which could lead to other important information. Re: [lace] Coloured prickings
My printer or rather Microsoft Photo editor works that way too. Scan the pattern first and save it and take it up in your photo program.Just use the tranparancy tool and you get a white backgruond. You may have to use it several times but that is OK if I just get rid of the awful colored backgrounds. I am sure other programs can do this too. Ann-Marie, Sweden http://community.webshots.com/user/annma1 http://www.ettklickforskogen.se/ One of my students, in conjunction with an on-the-ball photocopy-shop man, found out that she could have her black on orange pricking (which she didn't like) copied onto white by the simple expedient of him turning off the background colour in a colour photocopy machine ie it only picked up the black. She was then able to cover this with her preferred choice of blue film. I am now trying to work out if I can do this on my home (and more basic) colour photocopier, but if I can I haven't been able to work it out yet. If my explanation is clear enough, and your copy shop can understand you, this might be an option for dealing with the bright RED pricking in Tonderkniplinger. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [lace] Coloured prickings
Another way around this problem is to scan the pricking with a desktop scanner and then change the background colour to white in Photoshop or similar program. You can then print out the pricking in black and white. Happy lacing Andrea in a rather damp Cambridge. Re: [lace] Coloured prickings
Actually, the bright RED is the background of the pictures of finished lace only. The DIAGRAMS are printed on white in really bright (and not easy on the eyes...) colors. The prickings are black on white, but very faint. Dear Secret Pal, Thankyou so much for yet another lovely parcel. The Avon products will be much enjoyed indeed. Dear Secret Pal Apologies for the late thank-you. I did send one but seem to have done something wrong and it hasn't appeared. My daughter has claimed the gloves - something I've never used but she does, but I refused to part with the bath pillow. You couldn't have thought of anything better as my doctor has just advised long hot baths instead of my usual showers as an aid to pain relief. And I especially love the little duck, and the story. Thank you very much for the things in my white parcel. I have a feeling I've seen this one before, though it must have been quite a while ago; the feeling isn't all that strong. The two prayers confirm my belief that, while men may rule the church, it's the women who sustain it; a sound bite can be delivered anywhere, but a full exposition requires a roof over one's head, in case the weather conditions change before the prayer's over :) From: C.B.2 FEMALE PRAYER: Before I lay me down to sleep, I pray for a man, who's not a creep, One who's handsome, smart and strong, One who loves to listen long, One who thinks before he speaks, One who'll call, not wait for weeks. I pray he's gainfully employed, When I spend his cash, won't be annoyed. Pulls out my chair and opens my door, Massages my back and begs to do more. Send me a man who'll make love to my mind, Knows what to answer to How big is my behind? I pray that this man will love me to no end, And always be my very best friend. Amen. [lace-chat] :) Fwd: Late night political
Sadly, one of the last jokes from this particular source, once I get rid of the backlog; as of today, she'll have no puter access for an indefinite period... This one ought to have gone out yesterday (I received it yesterday), before the debate, but... From: R.P. Both candidates now are trying to lower expectations for how they'll do on the debates. For example, Kerry tried to lower expectations for himself by saying Bush has never lost a debate and that he is a formidable opponent. Then Bush lowered expectations for himself when he said, 'Hey, what does formable mean?' --Jay Leno Well, the first Kerry-Bush debate between President Bush and John Kerry takes place Thursday in Miami. And today, thousands of local residents began evacuating. --David Letterman The ground rules for the debates: The candidates must remain at least 10 feet apart, and they cannot talk directly to one another. It's actually based on the John Kerry-Teresa Heinz Kerry pre-nup agreement. --David Letterman The two sides have been going through all sorts of (debate) negotiations. Supposedly there's a perspiration clause, which requires the room to be kept at a certain temperature to prevent sweating. The Bush team wants the president to be far enough away from Kerry that people won't see how much shorter he is. Also on the height issue, the Bush people want a podium small enough that he doesn't appear short, but still big enough that Dick Cheney can hide inside it. --Jimmy Kimmel Teresa Heinz Kerry predicted at a fund-raiser the other day that Osama bin Laden will be captured just before the election. Of course when President Bush heard he was furious. He said, 'How did she find out?' --Jay Leno California lawmakers just approved tough new anti-pollution legislation. If it goes through, California would have the toughest emissions standards in the country. Ironically, our governor owns five Hummers and chain smokes cigars. He's the pollutiest governor ever - the man is doing everything but burning tires on his front lawn, and he's passing this legislation.
