Re: [lace] "bobbin" on ebay
I took a good look at your 'bobbin' . I think it may have been used in embrodery, when the stitcher doesn't a picture drawn and the fabric is really goiing to show any markings. One of my grandma's had one in her sewing box. She said she used it to stuff some of her embrodery. I'm sure that it was my dad's mother, as mother was the baby andthe older ggits has given everything away. Any way It never came my way. I don't promise thats what that is, bbut it looks similar. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [lace] "bobbin" on ebay
Clay, I think it must have once been the handle to something as the "spangle" end looks like it went into something. A stick base for a fan or a doll's parasol? In any case is sure is strange! This is a "bobbin" which someone may have spangled after deciding it was a bobbin... or it may have actually been used by a lacemaker (who was being resourceful?) The two paragraphs do give one an idea of how long it takes for less important "news" to percolate to the Times - the entire story (thongs in traditional techniques, older lacemakers opposition and the religious pressure on the black sheep) had been reported here about a year ago... :) And I'd like to register an objection to the title of the story on the grounds that no Polish name starts with a V; the V sound is represented by a W (as in German). The letter V is not even a part of the Polish alphabet, though we recognise it from foreign names/words. Vera (Veruschka in diminutive) is a Russian name; Wiktoria would be more likely to appear in Polish than Wiera, if we wanted to make the reference to "Victoria's Secret". And if we wanted to be very Polish indeed, it would probably be Wanda. Hi All, I guess no one else has picked up the gauntlet Jeri threw down so I will . The second paragraph in the NY Times article about crocheted thongs made in Poland. And I quote: "But the story doesn't stop there. First, the National Folk Art Society started legal proceedings, claiming that the women were sullying the town's storied lacemaking reputation. Then the local priest took to listing suspected thong makers in his weekly Sunday sermons. No word yet on how many have repented." I hope they're making a lot of money . Jane in Vermont, USA glad I hadn't put that part of the paper out to be recycled yet! [lace] Elastic for wedding garter
Hi, I would really appreciate some advice about elastic for wedding garters please :o) I have completed a garter (one of Biggin's torchon garter patterns) for one of my friends at work - although she doesn't know it yet - and luckily she is one of these stick insect types so I didn't have to do yards and yards of it. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed doing it and am quite sorry it is finished. Jacquie Tinch and I were chatting last night about it as I wondered what elastic was best to use and we both remembered that someone on the Arachne list spoke about this a while back. I'm sure it was mentioned that you could use some kind of bra-strap elastic or something similar which was slightly fluffy on one side which would stop the garter from slipping. What I was wondering was, if this is correct, any ideas where I could get this from? Jacquie rightly said we could look on the internet but as you all have so much experience out there, I would rather go by your recommendations of what you have used to keep the garter from slipping. The holes in the garter are very small and will only take 4mm size elastic and ribbon - and that's another story trying to find some decent ribbon of that size so if you know of any good suppliers with a selection I'd love to hear from you. Thank you very much, any help you can offer would be gratefully received :o) With my best wishes Jill - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks to all who responded about my plea for the thread guages. Tracy at the Lacemaker still carries them so I have ordered some and sent off my check to her at The Lacemaker in Cortland OH. For anyone who wants them, I don't think you would be making a mistake purchasing them. They are $4 plus shipping. I think they are an invaluable tool. I am so glad I found them. Hove a great day!
