How about starting the Arachne Altered Art range (aren't altered art the latest buzz words in anything creative that adds to or alters something?)? Take a vinyl or canvas bag, add some hand-made lace motifs and offer it to Paris Hilton or Victoria Beckham as an exclusive original for, what would be a reasonable price for them, of say $3,000. Bet they's bite at the hand-made and exclusive tags. [lace] Spiders
Robin wrote; By putting a pin at the center, you can tension your pairs around it, which pushes the body stitches upward against the twists of the legs. If this doesn't do the trick, then maybe you're putting too many twists on each leg before reaching the body For plain whole stitch or half stitch spiders, as a general rule I twist the legs the same number of times as there are legs coming in from each side, so for a spider with 2 legs coming in from each side I twist twice, for three from each side twist 3 times and so on. Seems to work. Doesn't apply for spider ground, when I always twist twice, or for other types of spider (such as spider with a hole, haloed spider), when I judge by appearance. Hello all spiders, As far as I know there is not any problem with the Annual Lace event in Catalunya. Usually during the general annual meeting of The Catalonian Lacemakers Assn.,which take place in January, it is settled the place where the Lace Day will take place. The decission is taken among the different villages which are interested in hosting and offer their help to organise the Lace Day. I do not think that CamariƱas has given up their Week of Laces, whereas I am going to ask and I shall inform you as soon as I hear anything. Regards. The website for the fair is www.FiberAndFolk.com/home.html It's in a couple of weeks time. I only know about it from the website, and have no direct knowledge of it Sue I apologise, it is being held in Crystal Lake, Illinois, which is in the Midwest of the USA, but in my defense I did say you can get a link to it from my web page. ;-) From there I think you can print a map. Patty wrote: I have just connected two stray bits of information. American Morning Glory = British Convulvus. After all this time looking at Honiton patterns with Convulvus in them and thinking they looked terribly familiar, I finally know what they are. The flower of British Convolvulus (also known as bindweed because of its tendency to strangle anything it winds itself round) is usually white or very pale pink and grows wild. The large white form, in particular, strangles any plant it encounters and will grow straight aong the ground over quite large distances to find something to support it. The Morning Glory flower is gorgeous shade of blue and is often grown as a climbing garden plant here. The shapes are similar and they are part of a large family of plants with different coloured trumpets. Is THAT all it takes?? Maybe that would change my luck for not having a date for years! Micki from rain-sodden Scotland I don't know about buttons on actual pillows - but superstition is that spinsters should have one, and preferably a shirt or flybutton, instead of the bottom bead on a spangle, supposedly to help 'catch a husband. [lace] Buttons on Lace pillows
According to Christine Springett's book Success to the Lace Pillow which is about old bobbins there are two reasons why you might find a Button included in the spangle of an antique bobbin. One reason is because when a spinster, or Old Maid, lace maker who everyone thought would never marry suddenly found herself a husband then her lacemaking friends would take a man's trouser button and put it in amongst the beads on one the spinsters bobbins. The other reason is that when a young couple got engaged to be married the boy, being a poorly paid agricultural worker and the girl a poorly paid lacemaker, no one could afford an engagement ring so he would give his sweetheart a button from his waistcoat instead and she would include that button in one of her spangles. regards Jenny DeAngelis. [lace-chat] Oregon to Oklahoma
Just wanted to say Hi to lacemakers in Oklahoma. I'm here visiting this week -- outside of Oklahoma City. It's a bit soggy from three weeks of rain, and the clouds are still coming. Oregon is dryer than normal this summer, and many towns are cancelling the July 4th fireworks displays. It's supposed to be over 90 degrees this week in Oregon, hotter than Oklahoma. I brought my lace pillow with me, and have been working on it. The family is getting ready to go out for lunch and show us some of the local sites. Must go.
