Re: [lace] Help needed--Display of lace pillow
Hello Lorraine One way is to secure the bobbins to the pillow with double-pronged jeweller's pins. I use these when transporting a pillow with lace work in progress on, and they never fail to keep the bobbins in place. The threads are currently tangled up and the bobbins splayed out in a half circle. The curator would like this pillow to look as if it was being worked, ie with portions of the bobbins looped over pins in various sections on the pillow. I am concerned about the weight of the bobbins, hanging from their threads and would like to have them supported on display. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of seeing lace-making pillows and bobbins on exhibit and how this was handled? Obviously, whatever is done needs to be unobtrusive and right now I can't think of anything other than plexi tiers which really isn't that minimal. Any ideas would be welcome. thanks shirley Shirley Ellis Textile Conservator, Royal Ontario Museum 100 Queen's Park Toronto, ON M5S 2C6 ph: 416 586-5878; fax: 416 586-8036 [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[lace] Re: Sylko thread
Dear Steph, I too have some old Sylko 40 (Dewhurst's Three Shells Machine Twist mercised cotton) which is on wooden 100 yd (91m) spools probably from the 70's it was part of grandmother-in-law's horde (school books to sugar, haberdashery) Brenda measured it at 28 w/cm. I used it once to do a beds collar from Pamela Nottingham's Technique of Bobbin lace. It was slightly too thick for that pricking but the thread is quite soft and it gave reasonably flat if dense trails. I liked the thickness of the sylko 40 for the ninepin edge. I'd tried to do the same pattern with an odd spool of Campbells linen which was supposed to be the recommended size, probably 90 or 100, but that was a bad spool and after 2 dozen snapped threads in the first head I gave up and burnt the spool. The linen sample worked up less dense and crisper. I can send you a small scan of the comparison if it would help. I've noticed that Sylko launders softer and loses a bit of definition compared to Tanne or Finca Cotton. regards Louise in crisp, sunny Cambridge, where the weasel is making her regular run outside my office windows again! It was originally made for sewing and comes on 100 yard plastic spools. The colours I got were deep blue, purple and cerise. I'm going to use them for lace to applique on a light blue T shirt. This thread is too old to be in the thread comparison book I own. Has anyone ever used it, and could give me some opinion as to how it compared with the recommended thread for a pricking. Size isn't crucial for my use, I like very open lace to use for applique, but a starting point to experiment with would be handy. - -- - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [lace] Point de F
I don't know how to babbin lace but I like the lace. Someone mentioned a demostration about Croatian lace. I come from Croatia and I know that in an island there is a special lace that was almost disappearing. They begun to teach again. The local call it (White gold). It takes hours fo make it and, according to the website, it never looses its shape when washed. I looked at the picture that the site provided and I see that it is similar to Aemilia Ars. Anyone of you saw that site? [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Point de Fee is a relatively late comer to the family of continental laces which were made in Belgium and parts of France. In the mid to late 18th century, the lace designs had gone from formal florals to more fanciful motifs, and these included animals, (hunt scenes were particularly popular) and themes from exotic places (the Orient was a fascinating source of inspiration). It is my impression that Point de Fee is a descriptor that can apply to Binche or Mechlin or a number of other related fine laces, and loosely translated means fanciful lace. Try Rio Grande at http://riogrande.com/ Click on Virtual Library, then on display and packaging, then search for display pins. Nickel plated pins, in either silver or gold colored, 5/16th wide by x 7/8 long, are $2.95. For a thousand. This is where I've bought my jewelry making stuff for years. They've always been very reliable and helpful. And, at least for the US customers, catalogs are free and lots of fun to browse. Although it's catalog orders over the counter. Their loose gems are exciting to dream upon. I use the pins for lace and needlework display. The silver ones tend to blend into the background of our darkish gray liner fabric. The lace pops out and the pins disappear into the background. Much nicer than just pinning...I alway tend to poke myself in various places as I mount the pieces. They also help keep things from walking away when you demo. I pin some smallish pieces and lace jewelry to my large pillow. If the item is pinned twice at different angles, it's pretty difficult for something to slip off. I'm trusting, but our lovely work is quite tempting to even the noblest of visitors. ;-) Another endorsement for a neat, tiny tool! RE: [lace] RioGrande
Dear Spiders, Sorry I replied to Betty but forgot to reply to the list. You have to become a customer of Rio Grande before you can register online. I suggest that you call their phone # 1.800.545.6566 and then ask to register as a customer. If they ask, tell them you do beadwork and beaded jewelry. (lots of people do) if they ask if you have a company name...tell them not yet (unless you do then give it)... They will get your address, phone # and all other pertinent info then give you a customer #...send you the hard copy catalogues (3 of them) if you desire and give you a temporary user name and password for the website if you want to get on that. NO unfortunately if your just a casual browser, you can not go to the website and use it. They cater online only to their current customers. (as a convenience more than anything else) As I told Betty...if you bead or do craft work with beads or metal at all, you will LOVE their stuff. High quality and they are very very nice folk to deal with.
