[lace] Hello again

2008-04-16 Thread P A Lally

Hi Spiders

I've just resubscribed after a a few months off the list.
Life has been busy - Honiton lace wedding veil has been finished and used, I
was very pleased with the result. (DD got married in Feb).

Phil DH has retired and we have moved house.
I have missed my daily lace fix but as things are now getting back to normal
and I have more time I will enjoy all the chat once again.

Only one problem now - a pleasent one, what piece of lace to plan next!

Regards
Annette in Melbourne, Australia.

No, that's not it. It's more like the pieces in Syllabus III.

Wow, that's a stunning piece! It also looks vaguely familiar--is it from
 Lohr's
 book Jagd something-or-other?

Oh sure, David!! Except in three months, I'd barely get one side done!! Even
working every day at the pillow when I was under a deadline, it took six months
to do a much smaller, much less complex piece!! I know I don't set a land
speed record with my lacemaking... but I doubt anyone could do a credible job
of that piece in three months.

Not that you've devoted all of your time to this piece (I know you have had
other projects...), but how is that lovely Tonder piece going?

handkerchief edgings (although none as stunning as this one...) I
must say that while the price paid was high, the wages earned by the
lacemaker were still appallingly low. Still, I am encouraged by the
fact that the lace we make is becoming more valued! While I suspect
that a lacemaker has bought this piece (I was tempted !), it is
clear that our own valuation of our work helps drive up the market!!

Most interesting Clay. Now why don't we flood the market with that
 design ? :) Got a spare 3 months?

[lace] LAce 2000 - windows Vista

2008-04-16 Thread Sue Babbs
It looks as if my husband will need to buy a laptop for business purposes, and
all the ones I have seen in the local shops now have Windows Vista as an
operating system ( which I am not keen on following the problems setting up my
mother's computer last year!)

As we would also use this computer when travelling etc, I was wondering if
anyone knows if Lace 2000 is compatible with Vista

RE: [lace] LAce 2000 - windows Vista

2008-04-16 Thread Ruth Budge
Yes it is. Just steer clear of a Toshiba - for some reason Toshiba laptops
seem to have deficient drivers for the video card (which is what controls
the screen display on a computer) and the people who have that brand get an
incomplete set of background dots. The rest of the programme works fine,
but their screen display has columns of white patches where dots should be.
However, they can still draw on the white bit. And that problem isn't
linked with Vista.

On the subject of having to get Vista - ask very carefully if you don't want
Vista. I bought a new HP laptop a few months ago, and of the six models
from that one brand, only two only offered Vista...the rest were either
Windows XP or a choice of XP or Vista. And a big local computer retailer
is actually offering models with Vista installed and a conversion disc back
to Windows XP included free of charge.

If you don't want Vista, you shouldn't have to buy it, but you might have to
work hard to convince the retailers, because they probably ordered in the
Vista-only models when the programme came out, and of course, they want to
sell their stock.

And good news for anyone considering buying a new lace-design programme -
Lace 2000 will very shortly be superseded by Lace RXP. I'm testing it at
the moment.

[lace-chat] Computer question - advice needed

2008-04-16 Thread Jean Nathan
I've switched off hibernation on my laptop, but I do have it set to standby
after 30 minutes on mains and 15 minutes on battery and the hard disk is
turned off after the same time. Just a touch on the spacebar brings it back
to life again. The longest it's left unattended is when it does a full
system virus scan. It's got a bit slower as I've added and removed software
over the years, but I've never gone back to factory setting with just
Windows XP and the Sony Vaio software installed. I switch it on when I want
to use it and off when I've finished. I also have restore points set once a
month or when I install new software so I can take it back to an earlier
time or date when all was fine if things go wrong. I dread the thought of
removing all my software and reinstalling it. All my data files are backed
up on to an external drive each week.

DH did have a problem with his laptop once when he forgot to turn it off and
it went into hibernation. It should have switched back on to the point he
left it when he pressed the power button. It did, but it promptly went back
into hibernation and did that every time he pressed the power button. He's
now switched off hibernation and all is fine.

[lace-chat] Miracourt lace item

2008-04-16 Thread Alice Howell
Here is a Mirecourt lace piece listed as a collar. I
understood Mirecourt as being used mainly for
household used.

This looks to me like the corner off something, rather
than a collar. Usually lace made for a collar has the
two front sections matching. This looks like an
edging that has been neatly trimmed between repeats.

What do you think?

Hello spiders

It looks to me as if it is machine made rather than hand made... there
are marks in the pattern which are repeated!! However, I may be
wrong, being new at this game...

Wonder of wonders, the lace ID is right. From the copious pictures,
someone took a piece of Mirecourt and rearranged it to make this
asymmetrical collar. This definitely looks like lace made for
furnishings, but I think the rework is good. Definitely eye-catching.

Definitely hand made. Handmade does not imply perfection. After the
312th repeat of something, I would be apt to make a mistake! Also,
if the pricking is wrong and the lacemaker is not up to fixing it or
is told to work it as it is, well there will be inconsistencies.

[lace-chat] Fwd: Today's lesson

2008-04-16 Thread Sue Duckles

A moral tale

In the beginning God covered the earth with broccoli, cauliflower and
spinach, with green, yellow and red vegetables of all kinds so Man and
Woman would live long and healthy lives.

Then using God's bountiful gifts, Satan created Dairy Ice Cream and
Magnums. And Satan said, 'You want hot fudge with that? And Man said,
'Yes!' And Woman said, 'I'll have one too with chocolate chips'. And
so

they gained 10 pounds.

And God created the healthy yoghurt that woman might keep the figure
that man found so fair.

And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat and sugar from the
cane and combined them. And Woman went from size 12 to size 14.

So God said, 'Try my fresh green salad'. And Satan presented Blue
Cheese

dressing and garlic croutons on the side. And Man and Woman unfastened
their belts following the repast.

God then said 'I have sent you healthy vegetables and olive oil in
which

to cook them'.

And Satan brought forth deep fried coconut king prawns, butter-dipped
lobster chunks and chicken fried steak, so big it needed its own
platter, and Man's cholesterol went through the roof.

Then God brought forth the potato; naturally low in fat and brimming
with potassium and good nutrition.

Then Satan peeled off the healthy skin and sliced the starchy centre
into chips and deep-fried them in animal fats adding copious
quantities

of salt. And Man put on more pounds. God then brought forth running
shoes so that his Children might lose those extra pounds.

And Satan came forth with a cable TV with remote control so Man would
not have to toil changing the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and
cried before the flickering light and started wearing stretch jogging
suits.

Then God gave lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and
still satisfy his appetite.

And Satan created McDonalds and the 99p double cheeseburger. Then
Satan

said 'You want fries with that?' and Man replied, 'Yes, and super size
'em'. And Satan said, 'It is good.' And Man and Woman went into
cardiac

arrest.

God sighed . and created quadruple by-pass surgery.

Satan chuckled ..and created the National Health
Service.

THE FINAL WORD ON NUTRITION

After an exhaustive review of the research literature, here's the
final

word on nutrition and health.:

1.Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than
us.
2. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
3. Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks
than us.
4. Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer
heart

attacks than us.
5. Germans drink beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer
fewer heart attacks than us.
6.The French eat foie-gras, full fat cheese and drink red wine and
suffer fewer heart attacks than us

CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is
apparently

what kills you.

Send this to at least 14 friends in the next 60 minutes to receive
absolutely nothing back and something good may not happen, but may, or
again may not, but who cares, cos it's funny

Here endeth the Lesson
