Knowing with a fair degree of certainty that I would not be one of the
lucky winners, I bought myself my *own* socks this week, when I spotted
them on sale, half-price! They're black with silver and purple
spiderwebs! The threads for the webs has some metallic stuff in them,
and are also fuzzy, so they're quite outrageous! But they sure were
fun to wear, and kept my feet nice and warm too!

[lace] Handy Hint

2008-11-01 Thread David in Ballarat

Dear Friends,
After working on a petit point portrait for the past 10 months, I
finally got back to doing some BL yesterday. As I leave for 3 weeks
up in the Northern Territory of Australia on Nov 9th, I needed to get
something started to take with me. So I've begun the most gorgeous
square edging in Point de Lille from that fabulous book called Ecke
(p.72 for those who have it). I'm working it in some beautiful fine
black silk (about equal to Pipers 2/20) but this came from Spain.
Only had to wind about 160 bobbins, but that merely took the time to
watch a double episode of The Bill and one other show :)

Now, as I've been working ALL day on it today (I'd almost forgotten
just how addictive BL can be) I started to think about things I might
be doing that others may not be. Probably numerous small techniques,
but one which I may have made up myself (along with numerous other
folk no doubt) is this.

Because the pricking, and hence thread, are so fine, I use those
brass Withof pins which are only about half an inch (1.25 cm) long.
They work perfectly well. However, I notice I get a much lovelier
effect if, when it comes to the picots on the edge I use an ordinary
sized lace pin. These have a larger diameter and really show off the picot.

I also use these ordinary sized pins (which happen to be silver
coloured) at the starting edge. Admittedly some of these are in the
point ground, but others can be on the edge of a half stitch filling
of a flower, or even in a honeycomb section. I find that when the
piece is finished and it comes to doing sewings to join end to
beginning, it's much easier having these slightly larger holes.

Just thought this might be of use to someone out there, as I can't
say I've read it in any books.

[lace] Honiton exhibition at The Hollies (UK)

2008-11-01 Thread Jane Partridge
It isn't very often that I go to see any of the small exhibitions at The
Hollies (Lace Guild HQ in Stourbridge) but I decided rather than posting
the book I had had for review I would take it back, and see the current
exhibition at the same time.

One of the recent acquisitions is a beautiful Honiton shawl, well worth
seeing, with a diamond ground of very even leadworks joining the motifs.
One of the collars on display had birds in with the flowers, which
caught my eye. There was another shawl, several collars and mats, a
bonnet (probably made for a Christening), and framed pieces including
one of Pat Perryman's costume ladies.

I couldn't come away without a look in the library (so I'll probably be
reading solidly for the next few days) and buying some thread from the
second-hand equipment etc that was for sale.

If you are in the English Midlands and have the chance to go and see
this exhibition, it is well worth doing in my opinion.

There is a new Introduction to Milanese book out, by Pat Read, which I
must admit I proof read. From not being the slightest bit interested
whilst at college and others were going into Milanese, reading this book
word for word, cover to cover has made me want to have a go. I've just
taken the second of the strips of Bucks (designed during Mom's last
night in hospital before she died last year, when I sat with her) off my
pillow, so now to work out which of the queue of things I want to do to
do next!

Thank you everyone, on- and off-line. An embarrassment of choice.

Does anyone know where on line I could find a Torchon edging either for

download or that I could pay for with Visa or PayPal and dowload right
 away?

Dear Jane,

Is this (finally!) a reprint of her original first book (with Lucy Kincaid)
or a brand new one? Very happy to hear about it in either case as I have a
student who has borrowed mine and she will be happy to have her own copy!

[lace] Lace Guild website update and Honiton exhibition at The Hollies

2008-11-01 Thread Jean Leader
We've just updated the Lace Guild website (url in the signature) and
mounted

1. A new list of second-hand books available from the Lace Guild which
you'll find under Lace Suppliers Books
There's a SALE on at the moment with many of the books at half
previous prices.

2. Details of two new Lace Guild publications - An Introduction to
Milanese Lace (the one that Jane Partridge mentioned in an earlier
message) and Circles and Squares, a selection of motifs in Torchon,
Bucks Point and Bedfordshire.

And don't forget that if you can't get to see the Honiton exhibition
at The Hollies the website Lace Gallery has pictures of some of the
items including the shawl with leadworks and the collar with birds and
flowers.

Let us know if you have any problems and we'll try to sort them out.

[lace-chat] raffle won

2008-11-01 Thread Agnes Boddington

I told my husband I won some socks in a raffle, and he was baffled!
Husband just don't understand us spiders.
I am thrilled to have won a pair, and I honestly did not invoke any
Halowe'en

spirits to help me.

Thanks Vicky.
