RE: [lace] Honiton Lace Shop and accommodations Honiton

2009-06-08 Thread Ruth Hollands
Devon

DH and I stayed outside Honiton last summer. Sadly the shop is closed and
the premises are now a restaurant. There is another shop a few doors down
which disappointingly only sells a few old bobbins and a few pieces of lace
already made, all of which are rather pricey . The Allhallows Lace Museum
is however well worth a visit and they sell a few basic items for Honiton
lace making and some patterns. During the summer they also have ladies
demonstrating Honiton lace making.

I cannot advise on accommodation though. We stayed in a caravan park up in
the hills outside the town.

Ruth

I sent an email to the site listed as that of the Honiton Lace Shop, but
did not receive a reply. Does anyone have any up to date information about
this business? I gather that the shop in Honiton was closed. My impression
is
that the restaurant with a lace theme that was planned, does not seem to
exist. I get the impression that the lace operation was moved to a farm or
barn outside of town. But, I am at a bit of a dead end, because I am not
sure that there is anything left of this business to visit.

Also, has anyone stayed in Honiton or near by? Our hotel search is not
going well. We are not going in high summer. However, it would appear that
the
accommodations in the area are largely oriented to people on "self
catering" holidays who are staying for a week.

[lace] accommodations Honiton

2009-06-08 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Devon, perhaps you should look a bit further afield for accomodation, as
everything is so close toghether over there, that the next town is not very
far away!! (Well, by Australian standards, anyway!!! :)) )

We were staying in Lydford House Hotel, Lydford, near Tavistock, (family
owned it then) and we were taken for a drive around, and went to Honiton -(
the shop was still open - about 10 years ago) as well as other places and down
to the seaside.

On another day we took the bus to Plymouth, spent the day there, and got the
bus home - so it was well less than an hours travel each way
It looked far on the map, but it wasn't in fact!

[lace] Re: New lace maker/Convention

2009-06-08 Thread Janice Blair
Hi Janet and Norma,

Welcome to the list.  It is usually a lot busier than of late.  Maybe
you can
think of a question to ask to generate some mail.  I get the
digests and
before the one today, the previous one was last Thursday!
Next
Saturday I will be teaching 4 or 5 new lacemakers at our lace day in
Downers Grove, Illinois.  The pattern is not my own and was chosen and
advertised before I agreed to teach the group.  This one has over a
dozen
sewings so I doubt that it will be made in the allotted 2 hour
period.  I can
see that after lunch the group will have to carry on
with the hope of
completing it.  It took me an hour and forty five
minutes to make the sample
and I am known as being a speedy lacemaker!

Hope I get chance to do some shopping.  I need to purchase some thread
for my
convention class.  I am, for the first time in my life, taking
the morning
needle lace class.  I forsee frustration as I do not get
along with needles. I
also forsee plenty of blood on my lace!   In the
afternoon I will be in Yvonne
Scheele-Kerkhof's Beds Flowers class.  I
think I am going to do the wild
strawberries pattern in her Nature in
Lace book.  On each strawberry there are
about a dozen rolled tallies
on the half stitch ground.  That should be a
challenge for me.  I have
just completed a piece with rolled tallies but I was
working in silk
and they were frustrating.  A half hitch did not hold at the
end of the
talley while rolling it,so I am looking forward to getting some
tips
from Yvonne.

When the supply list came for this class, it only had the thread for
the
Duchesse students and I was almost ready to cancel.  It needed
160/2 thread!!
I thought 100/2 last year for Binche was hard enough to
see.  I usually work
with 100/3 Gutterman so this looked like breathing
on it would break it.
Anyway, I have plenty of thread left over from
my Binche still on my bobbins
so at least I can save on some winding
time.  Just need another 2 or
preferably 3 dozen bobbins!  The talley
piece I just finished had 182 bobbins
altogether but I had to mix in
some different types.  Why is it that we just
never have enough?  Is
there a bobbin gremlin in my house hiding my stuff?
:-)

Lacemakers, if you are going to convention in LA this summer, I hope to
see
you at the Arachne lunch.  What classes are you taking?  Is anyone
doing the
needle lace with Nancy Evans?

[lace] Lace in fiction again

2009-06-08 Thread Cherry Knobloch
I saw a book on the bargain table called "Laced" so of course I had to buy
it. It's by Carol Higgins Clark. A lacemaker, who was also a housekeeper,
made a tablecloth but was never paid. She died and haunted the castle where
she worked and the tablecloth still resided. It's a light, quick read. Not
inaccurate about the lace but not deep or detailed either. A good read when
you want a distraction that you don't have to concentrate on!

other service except dial-up. Consequently the local numbers are always

Janet,
Welcome! I have only been a member of the group for about 6 months but I have
really learned a lot. I agree with you about the relaxation. I think that the
rhythm makes it a sort of meditation. Of course if I let my self meditate too
much I end up un-lacing!

Welcome Janet,

I'm a newbie to Bobbin Lace (approx. 6 months) and joined this list right at
the start of my BL adventure.  I love the rhythm and relaxation that comes
with lace making.  So many wonderful things to learn within this group.  I've
been a lace knitter and tatter for many years and am now captivated by the
bobbins.

Re: [lace] quiet list

2009-06-08 Thread Clay Blackwell

Hi Beth -

You're right, the list has been quiet! Last week, it was *so* quiet
that I went to the archives to check and see if there had been any posts
I had missed. Well... in fact, there had been... I had missed an
entire week of Arachne! (I've been busy, so hadn't really had time
anyway...). So I wrote to Avital, and she checked and found that I had
been dropped off the list - something that happens if your messages are
bounced a couple of times.

Evidently my ISP (Comcast) is at it again! David had a terrible time
getting through to me for a while there and we never did figure out why.

But as least I'm getting Arachne again!

Lace content: I'm down to the wire with last-minute preparations for
the third "Lace at Sweet Briar"! We have more people coming than ever,
and 75% of the people coming have been here before. Part of the
preparation is to secure the dates for *next* year, and so, for the
record, if you'd like to come, reserve the dates June 20 - 26, 2010.

Lace content: in between clearing my garden shed (to be demolished today) I've
been working on my latest lace project: I've adapted the wide insertion from
the latest set of Retournac patterns to make a square motif. This has created
some very sharp v-shaped direction changes in the trails, to add to the
technical difficulties already there. I'm working with three/four cluny/beds
books beside me, plus the encyclopedia of lace techniques (whose title/author
I have temporarily forgotten), but I'm mostly fudging it - trying things to
see what works.

I'm using a salmon pink Goldschild linen, which is unusual for me, I usually
work in white or ecru but I want this for a cushion cover to harmonise with
the other cushions on my sofa. It's a very nice thread to work with although a
bit "wiry" and springy compared with cotton, it needs firm tensioning after
every stitch.

Hope the "radio Silence" is because everyone's too busy making lace to write
emails.
