Re: [lace] Couvige at Pierrefeu du Var, France
The pillows on the pictures come from the North of Italy, next to France (where they have the same kind of pillow. It is interesting to observe the lace they make on this pillow (without any pricking!) Hello Vicki, it's not Jean it is Ilske answering, Those boxes comes from the region of Queyras and around there. You find those carvings on several things as well as on the sides of the round pillows. The bobins are carved in that matter as well. In the book from Claire le Goazion Dentelles du Queyras et ses vallées voisine all those things are described. Hope this helps. Hi Ilske! I have the book you mention! It is such a beautiful book, and I thought I would be able to muddle through, but it has been so long since I used my French that I have really had to struggle with it... and so it's not as much fun to read as I would like!! Re: [lace] Couvige at Pierrefeu du Var, France
Hello, Sure Queyras is in the south of french Alp. (wonderfull country) Queyras pillows have a box in the middle. The ornementation are make with a kniffe. The name of this pillow is tambour (drum). The Queyras lace is very special made without pricking. It came from Belgium, near Anvers. Women who travel with Napoleon army showed there lace to Queyras women. The back is point de Paris. Bobbins are big and heavy. They are carv with kniffe too. You need many bobbins to make lace. I let you image the difficulty to make this lace on this pillow! Claire le Goaziou book : (sorry I don't find the english version) http://www.barbara-fay.de/j/index.php?page=shop.product_detailscategory_id=6flypage=flypage.tplproduct_id=406option=com_virtuemartItemid=66lang=fr Her friend Françoise Monneret made books of pricking and graf from old laces. And pictures on this blog (at the end) : http://nanoudu05.canalblog.com/archives/2008/06/06/9474574.html http://blondecaen.chez-alice.fr/creul705.htm Pictures too on www.dentellieres .com (out of order today) http://mirecourt.free.fr/4e_couvige_3.html (Françoise Monneret) I have got at home a tambour du Queyras and bobbins. (from Marc Amblard) If some body want I can take pictures. I give the only Queyras lace I made (on it!!) Have a good day Sof in France And I always very happy to read so many mails on arachne. It's been not uncomplicated here and I apologize for not getting back up folks who have been so generous. But I'm pretty fluent on French. And you are one of those to whom I am in debt. Doesn't mean I'm fluent in lace french,,,! But if you want to fax a couple of pages to 914-834-0308 ... I'd be happy to take a stab!!! [lace] smelly lace book
Hi, I just received a couple of books from England from my SIL. One of them is The Identification of Lace by Pat Earnshaw. A paperback which smells really musty. She bought it in a little museum for .99 pence. What should I do to air the book and get rid of the smell? It really pongs. I once put a very musty book in a plastic zip lock bag with a fabric softener sheet for several days and that took care of the smell. Re: [lace] smelly lace book
Dear Janice and Others with smelly books. This is not an unusual problem. Just a month ago I received a list of 22 things you can do with a sheet of Bounce. Bounce is a product name for a square of material saturated with scented chemicals that we put in electric laundry dryers with our wet clothes to prevent static cling in our everyday clothing -- things like knee sox clinging to pants legs. This list included putting a Bounce sheet inside a book or photo album to remove unpleasant odors. I would place it inside the back cover, between two sheets of Bounty paper towels. Bounty has claimed to be acid-free. Not all paper towels are. We - on Arachne - have tested Bounty. In countries with different product names, use your pH testing pen to see if paper towels are acid-free. I just found that my pH pen has dried out, and I could not test the Bounce. Would someone please do this and report back to Arachne? I realize the scented chemicals may cause the pH mark to turn yellow, but we really should test it. I would suggest you put a reminder in your appointment book to remove Bounce from book - within 30 days, just in case long-term it would harm the book. By the way, these sheets are said to repel ants and mice (and maybe other critters that get into our collections), so you might like to try placing some sheets near areas where you do not want ants and mice, between paper towels or some other barrier -- never directly on collectible textiles, or inside archival boxes meant to protect (it might negate the purpose of the protective box). I must recommend you to check regularly, to see if Bounce is doing any damage, and do not leave it permanently. Warning: This information did not come from a qualified expert on how to conserve books and papers. Re: [lace] smelly lace book
Janice, I can tell you what won't work. I tried putting a book in the freezer (in a plastic bag) for about 3 months. About 10 minutes after I took it out it smelled just as bad as when I put it in. Then I tried the dryer sheets (Bounce). No luck there. Now I am trying a bag of unused kitty litter. We'll see how that works. I can also tell you that putting it in a bag with baking soda didn't work :( I can't remember who recommended that but it had no effect on the cigarette smoke smell on a book I bought. Re; Date: Wed, 10 Jun 2009 19:54:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Susan Reishus elationrelat...@yahoo.com Subject: [lace] Have you seen this? Those of us who have been on the Lace list a bit longer will remember this delightfull U tube video . I did not look it up, but the thread may still be in the Arachne archives The children in this video, as Anneke has told us, are the anthousiastic Lacemaking pyjama clad grand children of Anneke Reijs of the province of Limburg in the Netherlands. For those a bit newer to the list I wish to add, that Anneke, is a student and friend of sister Judith de Kreijger from the Netherlands . Sr. Judith developed the Withof laces.(Withof is the Name of Sr. Judith's convent ) Anneke did a superb job of documenting Sr. Judith's work in three Manuals of Sluis Withof and Duchesse Laces These manuals may still be available for anyone interested in them. As that Anneke is on the Arachne Lace list, she herself will answer those who may express an interested in purchasing the manuals .
