I've had good luck with a charcoal briquette such as is used in backyard grills in the USA. Just make sure it's not the self lighting kind :D

Janice,
I can tell you what won't work. I tried putting a book in the freezer (in a plastic bag) for about 3 months. About 10 minutes after I took it out it smelled just as bad as when I put it in. Then I tried the dryer sheets (Bounce). No luck there.
Now I am trying a bag of unused kitty litter. We'll see how that works.

Hi,
I just received a couple of books from England from my SIL. One of them is
The Identification of Lace by Pat Earnshaw. A paperback which smells really
musty. She bought it in a little museum for .99 pence. What should I do to
air the book and get rid of the smell? It really pongs.
