Comcast don't seem to like all sorts of internet providersI can never get a reply from my normal email address to anyone on Comcast. I had to open a gmail account in order to reply. I can receive messages from Comcast, just have to use gmail to get the answer back to themmost frustrating, and it's not as if I'm with a small, obscure provider. Re: [lace] real danger comming to the USA???????? or just a fluffy knit
Francis, I've had no trouble knitting on US domestic flights, using circular needles (resin ones from http://www.knitdenise.com/ or wooden ones from http://www.knitpicks.com/needles/Wood_Knitting_Needles__L300306.html). I also knit in February from Miami to Barbados and back. After September 11, 2001 many airlines did not want knitting needles as they could be used as a weapon with their sharp points. The current TSA (Transportation Safety Administration) regulations allow knitting needles and scissors with pointed tips with blades less than 4 inches, http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm. Specific recommendations for knitting are at http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1252.shtm. Looks like metal needles are not recommended. I don't know what carrier you are using to cross the Atlantic, but these regulations should apply to US carriers. Your local airport security in Brussels may have differing regulations. Hi Francis, I have taken bamboo knitting needles on transatlantic flights from the US and had no problem. You can also use them within the US but not on flights from Canada. I think you can even use metal ones in the US but as advised, better to check with your airline. I also would run a spare thread through my stitches just in case my needles got taken away. Hate to lose my stitches. [lace] Knitting on Planes
This discussion comes up in knitting groups a lot, and it varies by country. Interestingly most report that rules are stricter in other countries than the US of late, but as stated, contacting the airline you use is advised. As always, things can depend upon who you get and what kind of mood they are in that day as criteria can vary, sounding trite, but discussions show inconsistencies. My suggestion would be pliable needles such as Bryspun as they are very flexible and forgiving to hands and being stored, but only go down to 2 US, and come in dpns, straights and circs. Otherwise bamboo types tend to be forgiven more and naturally, avoid metal ones. Some bring a padded envelope, pre-self-addressed and stamped just in case, and either they (or occasionally a kind security guard), will post it for you. The goal would be to take a back-up set in your luggage if you wish to pass the time when flying as they just take them out of the knitting (so if lace, then place lifelines or have stitch holders, etc.) That is the bare bones I can provide in fair brevity. I've not travelled to the USA, but I did knit on the plane on the way to Prague last year. I did take wooden needles that didn't show up on the scanners tho, so I didn't actually declare to anyone that I had knitting needles with me. I didn't have any problem leaving Ottawa with my knitting, but had to put it into my checked luggage at Heathrow. Be careful hoping to put things into an envelope and mail them back to yourself if they fail to pass security. There is a mailbox in Ottawa, but no mailbox in sight anywhere at Heathrow Terminal 3 (although I understand there is one in the arrivals lounge - perhaps so you can send a card to say you arrived?) Re: [lace] real danger comming to the USA???????? or just a fluffy knit
As Bev said, check the webpage of the airline(s) you are traveling on. Most of them allow knitting these days, but some do restrict it to plastic or wood needles, not metal. On the chance that some inspector got fussy and refused to let you have them, take old ones that you can lose without sorrow. In a pinch, you could pull the needles out of the knitting, and pick up the stitches later with others. Take a book with you...one that you can throw away after reading. And take your eye-mask to cover your eyes so you can hopefully get a bit of sleep on the long flight. Claim a pillow and blanket as soon as you get on board since they never have enough to go around. Re: [lace] real danger comming to the USA???????? or just a fluffy knit
Hi Francis. Last year, I flew to Europe ( Dallas, London, Amsterdam) and back with a sock on metal dpn's, and no one said any thing. Most of the time the needles will be allowed, but it is up to the individual screener or attendant. If the attendant on board does not allow you to knit, I think they just make you put it away. I only received interested questions like what are you making. I would carry a self addressed stamped envelop, so you can mail it home or to your designation if security doesn't allow it for some reason. But I have heard from lots of knitters who fly with a whole variety of needles without a problem. In London I had to throw out my babies juice boxes, but they let me keep my needles. Hello Francis and everyone on arachne Some free advice is to check with the airline on their website where you should find a list of what is/isn't allowed in the carry-on luggage on an international flight. If you cannot knit you could rehearse your lines for the next movie ;) On Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 1:08 PM, Francis Busschaert < francis.busscha...@telenet.be> wrote: > hallo dear Arachnes, > > i have a question > i will be in a plain towards the big USA (brussels > ---chicagolosangeles) > and i was wondering to "kill" the time by knittning on the plane > but . it is towards the BIG USA so there will be probably problems > ahaed .. > -- Bev in Shirley BC, near Sooke on beautiful Vancouver Island, west coast of Canada - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Sweet Briar report- a little late
I have been home from Sweet Briar for a week. Unfortunately a few things broke in my house during that week, so it has been a week of dealing with repairmen. Looking back on the Sweet Briar week, I have to say that my memory is of a totally pleasant week. There was nothing unpleasant. Pleasant accommodations, pleasant class, pleasant company. Most of all, totally unlimited lacemaking. As I took Michael's class in Binche, it was possible to work from 8:30 in the morning until any time at night, although he tended to leave at about 8:30 pm. When one is doing something as totally absorbing and complicated as Binche, it is nice to have hours and hours to spend on it. I believe I actually completed a couple of inches in this week! Typically, I worked from 8:30am to 9pm, taking somewhat unhurried breaks since I knew there was no limit on time. The fact that you could work in the classroom, and not have to port all the stuff back to the room if you wanted to work at night was a wonderful boon. This event is totally unlike the convention in that there are no distractions from pure lacemaking. I like the convention, too, with more talks, entertainments, displays, a wider group of lacemakers, a more hurried atmosphere and more excitement, more vending, more politics (the Annual Meeting). Sweet Briar, on the other hand, is a totally relaxing lace immersion. Kudos to Clay for putting on such a seamless event. Devon **Looking for love this summer?
