[lace] Use of aficot and laying instructions
Dear Jeri Thank you so much for your information on the use of an aficot and the reasoning behind laying threads. I had heard about these things before but you explained it all so beautifully that I now understand why it is done. I intend to print it out and keep it with my embroidery things. Re: [lace] aficot afficot??
Dear Susan, You must have noticed that the spelling of many words in Europe change depending on language translations. I use the spelling of S.F.A. Caulfeild and B.C. Saward (notice the ei are reversed in the name!) in The Dictionary of Needlework, published first in 1882 in London. These two ladies - Sophia and Blanche - wrote a book that is still useful today, and it has been republished in 2 volumes by Dover. Many lace references are included. In hardback, the book runs to 528 pages, and it measures 11 high x 9 wide. It is the first reference I go to for 19th Century look-ups. Re: [lace] My Tally Video in Utube
Thank you David, for your version of a tally! I am still waiting to see someone do them like I do... It would seem that there are infinite ways to do a tally. I confess that for leaf tallies, I do them slightly different than I do for square tallys. Still, I think for relatively new lacemakers who have not yet found a way to make a pretty tally, having numerous versions available on YouTube is wonderful!! I first tried to make a tally when I had been making lace about a year. At that point, all of the members of the guild I am in referred to them as dreaded tallies, so going into it with that mindset was not helpful. I asked my teacher how to make a tally, and without getting out of her seat, she said, You just do it... cross twist twist, tension, cross twist twist! Needless to say, that was not helpful at all, and I realized I needed a real lace teacher! Shortly after that, I had the opportunity to take a class with Ulrike (Lohr, at the time). I asked her to show me, and she is the one I first learned from. I came away from that workshop with my head spinning with excellent ideas and tricks - and have never forgotten what a great workshop that was!! And the person who invited me to the workshop was none other than Tess Parrish, who started this thread on tallies by introducing us to her video! Sometimes things go in circles, don't they! Thanks again and again, Tess! I think the key to doing successful tallys is always that you have to practice, practice, practice. I intentionally took on a piece of lace which had hundreds of tallies in it, when I wanted to perfect them, and by the time I had finished the piece, I could safely say that a tally was just another thing... there were way bigger challenges in that piece for me than a mere tally!! [lace] tallies, laying tools af(f)icots
Hello! Thank you David for the tally video! As much as I like the economy of movement of the Brioude way, I don't think I could hold the bobbins between my fingers because of the permanent crook in my repaired my right ring finger. Your pins plastic seem like helpful tools to me so will give it a try. Loved the ivory piece, hankie perhaps? Shall I send my address privately? It would get top billing in my embroidered linen hankie folder!! Jeri, thanks for reminding us of the importance of a laying tool. This is the reason so many x-stitch pieces look untidy! Two threads over two gets yukky quick! I've resolved that by working 1 over 1 on high count linen--too lazy to frame up a small piece. While I end up with miniatures, not all patterns are suitable, the result is sort of a petit-point appearance that is quite engaging. As to the aficot/afficot, I can see there should be one of each in my tool box! Hmmm, will check with my knitty friends as something perf orated boxwood sounds intriguing could be helpful when I need that 3rd hand when I'm knitting. Many thanks, Helen! I noticed that the humped tallies leave an opening in the back, whereas the rolled tallies do not create one; that is, the cloth-stitch background remains even. I wonder if anyone has a graphic or line drawing of each type of tally? It would help me learn how to make them and see the further differences. [lace] Re: My Tally Video in Utube
Well done video Mike and David! A very interesting approach and I like the way you use the pins for support on the side threads. Haven't seen that way before. I am going to give that a try. A lot of hand action, but whatever works! Though not so much more hand action than normal lacing. I work tallies on the pillow with the palm of my hand holding down the bases of three passive bobbins and my finger tips on the heads of these bobbins. The fingers make the passives lift up and down like a weaving loom. The weaver easily passes over and under. I don't use spangled bobbins for this technique. And sure helps to have bobbins with a point. Here is a partial explanation of how I do it. Partial because a few of the pictures don't load. But the instructions are still there. You get the idea. http://tatmantats.wordpress.com/making-a-leaf-tally/ I had to chuckle at the celluloid/cellulite comment :-D -- Mark, aka Tatman blog: http://tatmantats.wordpress.com/ TatmanĀ¹s Online Shop: http://tatman.etsy.com email: tatmant...@gmail.com On 9/11/09 6:59 AM, David C COLLYER dccoll...@ncable.net.au wrote: Dear Friends, Mike has very kindly edited the video of me making a tally in bobbin lace, and placed it on Utube for your edification. Hi all As some of you know I've been working on a book Suffolk Lace and the Lacemakers of Eye for several years now, well after many months of major major technical problems, which neither the printers, numerous computer/printer technicians and various others have been able to fathom, and although a month later than anticipated and only six days before my deadline, the book was finally delivered to me this afternoon. It is all very exciting, I'm pleased with the end result and also very relieved that its finally here. [lace] leaf tallies in Die Spitze
Hi everyone In the current issue of Die Spitze there are quite a few items about leaf tallies, some nice patterns that have them, a Cluny style with plaits, leaf tallies, and raised tallies on half-stitch blocks; a Scheeberger 'UFO' with flat tallies, and an Italian Guipure with rolled tallies. There are technical diagrams on one of the pages, in 4 languages; a small corner devoted to tallies shows 6 varieties of leaf tally (2 pr., 2 pr. with changed weavers, 3 pair, and three versions of a tally made with 4 pairs. Re: [lace] Making tallies
With the square, it helps when starting out to use temporary pins to support the pairs as you make the square shape, and again when you end. The end pair that are passives should be worked into the rest of the lace before the end pair that has the weaver, so that the tally isn't pulled out of shape (or could be the other way around - I haven't made them in a while). Re: [lace] Making tallies
I make the square tallies, and then work in the end pair that does *not* have the weaver. When I first started making tallies, my biggest problem was that they collapsed after I began using the weaver again. So... I put a knot at the pin and then continued. The knot didn't show, but I wasn't happy with my cheat. So I eventually became more comfortable with the pattern and with my tensioning in general, and so I just used a half-hitch instead of a full knot. That seemed to work as well, and on the occasions when I had to undo a tally (*not* something that I could avoid, occasionally!), it was much easier than picking out a knot made with 140/2 thread without destroying the threads!! Finally, Anny Noben-Slegers encouraged me to set up the tally so that the work on the left of it can continue immediately after the tally, then make the tally and carefully work the worker as far into the piece as I could with what I had, and after two or three stitches, it's safe and you don't need to baby it any more. That works for me. But I still use the half-hitch!! ; ) Clay bev walker wrote: With the square, it helps when starting out to use temporary pins to support the pairs as you make the square shape, and again when you end. [lace] Lacemaking participation in International Climate Day of Action October 24th?
Gentle Spiders, I just sent this to my group's list, but, on reflection, it occurs to me this could go wider: October 24th is the International Climate Day of Action. http://www.350.org/invitation The idea is to represent 350, because 350 parts per million is what many scientists, climate experts, and progressive national governments are now saying is the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. People in more than 1000 communities around the globe have already announced plans-they'll be school children planting 350 trees in Bangladesh, scientists hanging banners saying 350 on the statues on Easter Island, 350 scuba divers diving underwater at the Great Barrier Reef, and a thousand more creative actions like these. At each event, people will gather for a big group photo that somehow depicts 350--and upload that photo to the web 350.org. As actions take place around the world, we'll link all the pictures together electronically via the web--by the end of the day, we'll have a powerful visual petition linking together the entire planet that we can deliver to the media and world leaders. The petition is aimed at the big meeting in Copenhagen this year. So--I'm looking for ideas about something lacemakers could do as a group to represent 350, and who would be interested in participating? Time is short I realize not everyone on this list agrees with the goals represented by this Day of Action.
