2009-11-09 Thread Susan Roberts
I have just received the message below for inclusion in the next issue of the
Lace Guild magazine - not sure if anyone else has received a similar e-mail or
not. As the next issue isn't due to be published until the end of January I
thought I would circulate it now so that anyone who wanted to write to the
Mayor had the details, I have asked if there is a deadline to write to the
mayor.

To the members of Lace Guild,

Last thuesday on the 5th of November the Kantcentrum in Brugge was closed
after 40 years of education. In the General meeting the menbers of staff have
neen told that there is no future for them.

This dicision is based on problems of financial art. The Kantcentre has
lookedfor a new financier for several years, after the West Vlaamse management
stopped with the subsidies. But they didnĀ“t find anyone.

The Kantcentre started in 1970 with education in lace. Many teachers have
followed their education there, and can now bring their knowledge to other
people who want to learn lacemaking. Every year the Kantcentre organizes the
Lacedays and many tourist make acquaintance with the lace and the lacemakers.
With the sunnercources it was possible for people all over the world to learn
several laces. I followed several years the Binche by Anne Marie Verbeeke. In
my class were 6 different countries present. Also the Lace Magazin is no more
available.

I hope that with my message many lace makers stand up to do an appeal to the
Mayor of Brugge to help the Kantcentre and give them a new future. It is a
disaster, not only for the kantcentre but also for the city of Brugge. The
adress of the Mayor is: Patrick Moenaert, Stadhuis, Burg 12, 8000 Brugge,
Belgie.

With kind regards,

Gerry Fassotte/Impelmans.

So sad, but the same old story regarding lace, our own local colleges gave
up all the lace tuition classes because they said they were unviable but the
classes had had their fees raised time after time so that they priced
themselves out and the few who could afford to continue were not given the
chance. It's about time that they realised that these crafts are important
not only to us but to future generations, the art of lacemaking will die out
completely if we do not fight to keep it alive.

Very sad indeed. I had the opportunity to visit the Centrum and observe some
of the wonderful ladies there doing lace. I had a subscription to the
beautiful and informative magazine that the Centrum published. This is truly
sad for Bruges as well as for the lace world.

Re:[lace] Torchon and grid degrees/Kantcentrum

2009-11-09 Thread Janice Blair
Hi Sue,

My Christmas card for the exchange this year uses Torchon ground but is on a 52
degree grid. I needed to work at that degree to get the correct shape for my
design. I see nothing wrong in manipulating the grid if it improves the design.

I was also sorry to see the news about the Kantcentrum. I was lucky enough to
visit them when I persuaded DH to do a side trip when we were on a business
trip to Brussels. I also managed to buy a cookie pillow from the shop and get
it back home on the airlines even though it would not fit in the overhead or
under the seat. I remember on one of the flights home that I held it behind my
legs in the seat, it was not obvious to the flight attendant as I covered my
legs with the provided blanket. I also did not say it was full of grass when
I went through customs. :-) Pity, I probably will never get back to Brugge
again.

Janice

I have been making lots of torchon lace since 2001, but whilst playing with
the design program the other day I brought up a bauble pattern I had made up
and then messed about changing the grid angle, just to see what would
happen.
I changed the grid size a couple of times, but found the 52 made a good
visual change to the bauble, but if I made it like that it would still be
better in torchon type stitches rather than the point ground (because of the
stitches involved throughout).

Do any of you construct torchon in any other than 45 degree angle, or does
this then become wrong?

[lace] Lace Guild magazine

2009-11-09 Thread Janice Blair
I was just looking on the UK website for the Lace Guild and I saw that the
magazine info had changed. Has anyone in the US received their fall issue of
the magazine? Maybe mine is coming on a slow boat. DH did say something about
postal problems in Europe so maybe that is the case. Just wanted to check if I
was the lone one pining for my lace fix.

[lace] wip's

2009-11-09 Thread Lorelei Halley
Hi
I'm on a getting rid of wip's kick. So I've just finished a few really easy
pieces in the last few days. View them at
 http://stitchinfingers.ning.com/photo/photo/listForContributor?screenName=23
apcp24qdsnn
A tape lace from the DMC tape lace book, and R29o a torchon of my own design.

Now I have a baby Binche piece to finish (I'm almost 3/4 of the way through
it). That will take a few days. And then I can tackle the Flanders piece
the High Bridge, which has been giving me more trouble than one would
expect. And after that I can get started on my list of things to do:

advance in Beds with Underwood's book
do all the Binche learning patterns
learn Paris lace
Learn how to design Beds
get my pattern downloads working right
work samples of all the other original designs I've made
learn how to design Binche, Paris
learn Val
etc.
etc.
etc.

I visited the grocery store where I worked until I retired in July and they
asked me are you keeping busy?.Silly question.
