[lace] Lacemaking at the train station

Today I went downtown Chicago on the train along with a group of
knitters. We worked on the train knitting, but I did needlelace.

Totally unaware of the significance of the day, yesterday I had arranged
to take one of the other members of our knitting group over to the
narrow gauge railway in North Wales (where I work as a volunteer
shedmaster - nothing glamorous, roughly translates to showing passengers
round the museum and doing housework between trains!). This involved
getting trains from Birmingham to Porthmadog and back - four and a half
hours each way, so we took our knitting to do on the train. Lydia was
working on squares for a baby blanket (as a group, we knit for a local
hospital) and I managed to finish one sleeve and start the other of a
cardigan I'm knitting for my granddaughter.

I'm now wondering whether there would be sufficient interest amongst the
North Wales lacemakers to join me in a make lace on the train day at
the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, Porthmadog on National Lacemaking
Day (September 11th) - are any there Arachnes living in that area?

Re: [lace] Re: International Knitting Day

2010-06-13 Thread Sue
For 15 years I haven't bothered to knit anything at all and more years than
that since I knitted anything vaguely lacy but recently found some
irrisistable colours on sale which I just had to buy, price excellent too:-)
I have just finished knitting a cardigan with no lace but a tiny bit of
pattern (I could only find a couple of very basic patterns after all this
time.)
On thursday I stepped out of my door with bags in my hand and ended up doing
an elegant sideways roll, badly spraining my right foot and breaking a bone
in my left. So my new not very elegant leg and footwear is a tubigrip
bandage on one leg, a hard half cast thing wrapped with bandages on the
other, a pair of socks borrowed from DH and one of his slippers which is the
only thing I can get on at present.
But, my ears went up reading this Clay, what are toe-up socks? I think when
the cast is changed I wont be able to use his socks any longer and will need
something to keep my little toes warm.
Thursday I have to have a full cast put onto the broken foot but like all
things we have no idea how long before I will be able to take all my weight
onto the other one, certainly not yet.
I think I need L plates for these crutches which I am not good at driving,
g.

I am now knitting a really nice twisted rib waistcoat in rich purple, so its
keeping me occupied a bit, and I cant get close enough to my lace pillow to
work at present but I am also hoping to use some of the time getting better
at the needle tatting.
DH is a star, and serving me home made strawberry ice cream, VB Grin but
not worth breaking anything just for that which I would have got anyway:-)
Mind you when I am mended he needs an op on his knee, so then is my turn to
take over being chief cook and bottle washer.

Sue T Dorset UK

I did do some knitting today! I'm working on the second of a pair of
toe-up socks, and they're delightful!

Hello Sue,

what a bad thing to have such a bad fall. I did one recently but got away with
a few bruises on
my face, hands and knees and scratched glasses. Everything is healed and
repaired by now.

I got into knitting and esp. knitting socks last year again. Finished 12 pairs
last year and 1 this
year. Tried toe-up knitting this year, but had no time to get anywhere yet.

My exams and DD's wedding last weekend had priority over anything else.

I hope you can still make the best of it and relax with your knitting and
needle lace. You do
sound as if your good mood did not really suffer. Good that DH is such a
thoughtful chef.
*smile*

I wish you a very speedy healing and very little pain.

Take care,

Hello,

DH has published his cook book via Books on Demand about 10 years ago and it is
still
selling.

Hello All! While standing in line at Barnes Noble, I overheard a
conversation regarding books on demand. I'd never heard of this
concept so asked the attendant. Apparently there are publishers who
receive (paid in advance!) orders from BN, print the book send it
to the store for pick up. What a novel idea! Except we're talking
non-fiction G!! The gal in front of me paid for her book the
store will call her when it is ready. Is this something that could
be pursued with the fine folks at Batsford (or other publishers of
lacemaking books)?? Sounds like a win/win solution to the OOP
situation we are experiencing. Susan, in Erie

I'mnot in the immediate area - about 2 hours away, but it does sound like a
fun day, and if I can persuade DH to make a day of it, it might be possible.

thank you for the explanation of the expression bar association. I thought on
the other German word for bar so I couldn't understand. Now it is clear and
make sense.

Re: [lace] Lace in Vietnam

2010-06-13 Thread Ilske Thomsen
Hello All,
didn't we have a wonderful knitting day?
We went out with the idea to find people knitting somewhere in the park. But
the question was in which park shall I look for first. There are so many here
in HH. Than it started raining, it was fresh and windy so we decided to go to
one of our museums. In one they show possibilities to survive in case of
environment accidents or in further future. And there is such round thing
outside the museum in the high of second floor. Three people could go in at the
same time, without shoes and loose things like mobilphones or so. First we had
to go into a tent like place and wait till they pumped air or what ever in it.
than we opened the next zipper and went out of the wall into another
transparent tent. It was a normal feeling but our voices sounded strange. I
mentioned about knitting day and that there is a chair missing. The young man
who was me and another lady said that I didn't like to be inside a longer time
still with a chair.
That was my knitting day. At home I did some lacemaking instead.

I must say that my imagination told me that these would be like gloves for
toes, with separate toes:-) rather than just a different way of knitting
socks. I did knit a couple of pairs but about 20 years ago but they are
too
small to wear with my plaster cast or my tubigrip, hense the borrowing of
my

DH socks. This morning we did go and buy a new pair of slippers in his
size, lovely and comfortable on my right foot but he gets them when I am
done:-) and also he can wear his old slippers now instead of having to go
around with bare feet in the mornings, bringing me a lovely cup of tea:-)
I have to say that its is more painful now but obviously the bruising is
coming out and they will reduce in size ect over the coming days. Thank
you very much for your interest and your information.

Dear Sue,
Sorry to hear about your elegant sideways roll. Miserable. There
are several books on toe up socks. I knit mine from the cuff down, and
have learned that pattern by heart. The socks change by whatever of
those computerized variegated yarns I purchase, which make fascinating
sock the incredibly simple way. Sock yarn is coming into its own. This
is a quite new book, I have the older one and have read it. Toe is no
problem, I just can't get my mind around the heel. Perseverance is the
key.

Hope your recovery is speedy and without incident.

Sue, there is a pattern for socks with toes! I'm trying to think where
I saw it, and it seems to me it's in a book by a Japanese designer...
and I think the socks were shown with the traditional Japanese
sandal... sorry, I know that's not the right word for it. So keep
looking - you may find one yet.
