No, they don't! Alicia lives in Switserland, Daan in China and that makes
it hard to work with them on a lace at a regular base.

They are each 15 yrs old now and have a lot of other interests !
But they are still very interested in my lacemaking so perhaps one

[lace] Where Have All the Tatters Gone? (digitally)

2013-04-17 Thread Karen Bovard
'Where have all the tatters gone!?'

I have had to admit that I am not
technically savvy but I have been wondering recently about how to get in touch
with tatters.  It used to be that most everyone with internet service 'hung
out' on the listserver like Arachne, HBTatters, etc.  Someone recently
mentioned 'that listservers were a thing of the past'.  Since then I have been
realizing that they are right.  It used to be that there were alot of
wonderful threads of discussion going all the time about tatting on the
listserversnow it seems dead.  In the mean time, Blogs/Blogging has come
into being. As someone who works and spend her available spare time designing
tatting, tatting up the pieces and then writing books with the patterns I
really haven't had time to read/follow blogs.  Now I realize that the whole
social network thing is totally outside my understanding.   (I'm still trying
to figure out FaceBook, never mind Pinturest!).  I joined several Yahoo Groups
but the
traffic and number of participants is so small that I never
get appreciable answers/suggestions to my enquiries.

So, my big questions
are:  Where are tatters socializing/sharing ideas?

or is the better
question 'How' to get into contact with tatters.

Do most tatters spend their
time reading blogs instead of connecting other ways?  I have spent time
writing a blog and giving away patterns and techniques but am wondering if
anyone is reading it.  It seems like I need to find a way to market my blog so
that my time is well spent.  All in all it seems to be a circular activitiy.

Any ideas as to 'Where have all the Tatters Gone?' ( can't you hear the
music!)

Re: [lace] Yaspé silk thread and hitches

2013-04-17 Thread Carolina de la Guardia
This is the usually way I wind the Spanish bobbins, so the hitch does
not tangle with the rest of the thread. It is true that the size of the
bobbin is 14 cm. long and this helps.

I made sure that when I wound the bobbins I only put thread on the

bottom two thirds of the neck, leaving the top third of the neck bare wood which
held the hitch very nicely.

Jill in Newport Pagnell, Bucks

I have used Yaspe silk from BF and had not problems. But I have to say
that one hitch do not works for me. Up to 3 hitches is usual and when it
comes from silk that slips I make 4 hitches.
More than one hitch is not a problem to slide the thread of the bobbin
when it is needed.

Thank you Lorelei for sharing, some truly remarkable pieces of lace. In the UK
we seem not to make such large pieces as your Lacemakers - it was lovely to see
the jackets in particular. We seem to have less and less lace days now than we
had a few years ago, I think it is because so many people buy online supplies
these days, but that will never beat walking round at a lace day looking at
other lace and getting ideas for future projects.

[lace] lace - Yaspe silk

2013-04-17 Thread Karen Thompson
Ruth,
I am working on schal Sabrina with 3 colors of Yaspe shantung tussah silk,
and am loving the relaxed work while demonstrating or watching (listening
to) TV. Yes, the silk is very uneven and full of slubs, which I think is
part of it's beauty. It quite often gets stuck on the bobbins and have not
found a good solution, except grin and bear it while digging it out and
redoing the hitch. I was afraid of running out of thread, so did not wind
nearly enough on each of the 140+ bobbins, resulting in many joins. Due to
the unevenness of the thread, the joins do not show, and the threads grab
each other - which is positive and negative. The thread is very strong. I
am making the shawl on a wide bolster pillow where I can do the full width
of about 10.5 inches (26 cm), so I don't have to join later. I should have
started with large loops for fringe, so I wouldn't have to add them after I
finish - Oh well, hindsight..
You can choose another thread if you don't like the Yaspe. Enjoy.

Thank you for the links Lorelei, they are very inspiring.

I've been thinking of trying something like the brooches with wire gimps at
the edges. Does anyone have any advice on what type and gauge of wire to
use? Can you just wind them on bobbins as you would thread? wouldn't the
half-hitch cause problems?

thanks

 wouldn't the half-hitch cause problems?

Absolutely, Ayla! Using wire requires a special bobbin. There are a number of
different types, designed to meet the various weights (sizes) of wire in a
project. You will never want to put a hitch on wire... It will crimp and
never straighten again.

Sorry I can't provide more information but I have only had a tiny exposure to
wire lace... Enough to know the challenges!

Re: [lace] lace photos

2013-04-17 Thread J D Hammett

Hi Arachnids,

Firstly my thanks to Lorelei for the inspiring lace webpages. They are
lovely.

Secondly, There seem to be fewer Lace days and fairs in the UK as Sue said.
The reason for that is probably not just the fact that people are using the
net, but also that the people who used to organise them (and note here that
it often has been the same few people taking up the work of putting these
things on) tend to be getting a little older. Younger ones may not have the
time nor the inclination (No time? Shy? Not feeling 'up to it'?, etc.) to
take up the mantle.

Thirdly, I have used to the stiffen the edges of lace; spangle wire (24 and
26 gauge), different sizes fuse wire and millinery wire. Spangle wire and
fuse wire don't rust. Millinery wire which is cotton covered steel will rust
if in damp surroundings; spangling and fuse wire are brass/copper based and
cause fewer problems. They look pretty in the edge but they will tarnish and
may discolour the lace on the edges in the long run. Stainless steel wire,
difficult to get hold of and a nightmare to handle as it is very springy,
discolours less. Sterling silver wire is expensive.

I tend to use short pieces (enough for a section such as a petal or a
butterfly wing) with only the ends wound onto a stout bobbin. These curled
up ends will be discarded. Put as few bends, windings and kinks in the wire
between the bobbins at the end as possible, any unnecessary bends etc. can
cause kinking which is particularly difficult to remove. So handle gently
and bend gently to the shape needed as you work the wire into the lace.

Hope that helps.

Happy lace making,

Joepie, East Sussex, UK
