[lace] Reply to email about Let's Celebrate photos

2016-11-23 Thread Jane Partridge
Sorry, I hit send before trimming, forgot because it's early morning (waiting
for newspapers to be delivered for our round) and I'm using my phone so can't
see the text below my signature in the tiny bit of screen. Will try and
remember in future!

Re: [lace] Exchange update/Lace magazine

2016-11-23 Thread Jane Partridge
I suspect that the reason why the photos are not put on the website is because
the Guild usually produces a cd/dvd of them for sale, and free access to them
via the website would defeat the object. Contact The Hollies
(holl...@laceguild.org) if you would like to buy one, I'm fairly certain I saw
Michelle with a stack she was sending out when I was there a week or so ago.

Re: [lace] Virginia Churchill Bath book - the review

2016-11-23 Thread Jeriames
My recent review of this book appeared in the November 2016 newsletter of
The New England Lace Group. I thought it had stood the test of time quite
well, and deserved a new introduction to today's lace makers. (It was
originally published in 1974.)

If you own the book "Lace" and would like to read the very current review,
and perhaps make a copy of it to put in your book, click on the photo of

[lace] Exchange update

2016-11-23 Thread Jenny Brandis
G'day and Good morning everyone, wherever in this world you may be.

It is hard to believe that 2016 is drawing to a close when I still have to
concentrate when writing the date LOL. Ah well, that is what happens when
you brain gets full of all those past years of memories (also called getting
old).

Our 2016 Lace Exchange is ticking along nicely with all the name matching
being done by our wonderful Janet Theaker. I believe all of you have now
begun if not finished your exchange pieces so this is a gentle reminder to
scan or photograph your finished work for the website.

So far I have received just 11 scans/photos so I am really looking forward
to the rest coming in. If you wondered about the person you are sending it
to seeing it before it gets there, don't worry, the website will not go live
until mid December - but it makes it easier for me if I can get the content
all ready, in bite size chunks of my time rather than a marathon effort at
the last minute.

Please forward the photo/scan to me at je...@brandis.com.au
along with a bit of detail to make the site
more interesting. You can check out the previous years at
www.brandis.com.au/arachne/

Suggested details could be some or all of this or perhaps you have more to
say

*Sender and receiver

*Where pattern can be found (own design, name of book, author,
website, workshop etc) This will help other lacemakers find the source too.

*What thread and notions you used

*How many bobbins did it take

*What is the technique called

*How long did it take to make (this year I timed myself and each one
took approx. 5 hours)

*What part attracted you to this design

*.

I have one more to get off my pillow so I understand that the time can run
away with you.

[lace] Honiton/Withof

2016-11-23 Thread Lorelei Halley
Apparently my spam blocker sequestered Anneke's and Lyn's responses to Ann's
question. But now that I see the answers it is interesting to see how
different people see different things, or perhaps, emphasize different
things. Put all 3 answers together and you have a good description.

Re: [lace] Honiton vs Withof

2016-11-23 Thread Lyn Bailey
I sent the following to Ann Humphreys on 11/19, and to lace@arachne on
11/20. Let's see if it gets published this time.

Both are part laces using very fine thread. Honiton elements are
frequently put together later. Withof elements are connected by the
lacemaker as she/he goes. Honiton has pinholes, Withof does not. Honiton
uses 3 twists on the pin-under-four, Withof uses 2. Withof uses a thicker
thread as gimp. Honiton pairs the thick thread with a thread the weight of
the rest of the piece, CTC that pair throughout, so it stays on the edge of
the motif. I'm sure there are other differences, but I can't think of any.
I'm also sure there are others on this list more qualified to state the
differences.

Lorelei wrote:
Withof and Honiton are alike in that they are both part laces which use
raised work.

Part lace means that the lace is made up of several discrete parts, and at
the end of the motif the threads are knotted and cut off. So on the wrong
side you will see knots and lumps. But they are quite different in the
sequence of working and the kind of raised work that they do.

Raised work in Honiton may be a narrow tape with pinholes only on one side.
This narrow tape is laid down first, usually to emphasize the central vein
of a leaf, but it may also use a bundle of threads whose purpose is to
travel the threads from the end of one motif segment to the top of another.
Here is a leaf I made from Maidment, using Luxton's instructions.

In Withof the bundle of threads is the most common and it may be laid down
to emphasize a leaf central vein. But the whole motif is also usually
surround by a bundle when the motif is ended. This gives relief and
interest, but actually functions to secure all those ends, so there are
fewer knots and much more stability. Here are 2 small motifs I did many
years ago.

http://lynxlace.com/images/lace726.jpg

In both the raised work gives dimension to the work, a decoration, but is
primarily a means of moving threads from one place to another without
cutting them off, reducing the number of knots and enhancing stability.

Honiton had and has many designers over the 2 or 3 centuries of its
existence, and its style (the design itself) changed over time. True Withof,
as I understand it, has only Sister Judith as the designer. She and her
students developed Withof as a variation on Duchesse, starting in the mid
20th century.
