[lace] Beginner Pattern
I designed a beginner cat pattern which is on my website. I posted the link on Facebook on Bobbin Lace Makers and it has been really appreciated, so I thought I would share the link here. Go to jblace.com It is in the Pattern Gallery. We have had an influx of new lacemakers at Silvergate Lacers near San Diego this summer and I thought it might be nice for them to introduce them to a half stitch pattern with a whole stitch edging. I have so far made 8 and intend to use them as bookmark gifts for my knitting group, 4 more to go. They usually take me an evening to make but I am a fast lacemaker. I tried to use thread that was available locally in the US. Devon, I converted this email to plain text so it should arrive looking normal. Your reposting of Jeri's email included lots of uppercase 'A's in the digest form. It is hard to remember to do it every time though. Re: [lace] Reposting Jeri's email on Levey
I agree with Bev. I don't get the messages from AOL and Yahoo, but as far as I know, everyone can get gmail messages. It's easy to sign up with gmail and it's free. If you have been storing Arachne messages in a mailbox at another email address, on AOL for example, you can always forward messages from gmail to your other email address. I do that frequently. My gmail address came with my first cell phone, and I mainly use it for Arachne. My husband is happy that all the Arachne messages no longer come to our regular email. Just a friendly suggestion. Re: [lace] belgian color code cttct
Good question. Might it be a green intersection (half stitch), little hatch mark for another twist, then another green intersection (halfstitch)? If there's no pin in the center of all that, it would pull up into a turning stitch, so the diagram would be right for the thread movements. Re: [lace] Reposting Jeri's email on Levey
Dear Bev and Sue, In July, I had a lace maker with great computer technical experience as a guest here for a week. It seemed like an ideal time to perhaps set up a gmail account. She is subscribed to Arachne, and knows the history of my problems. She looked at all my AOL files and how I maintain them, and suggested I keep everything the way it is. Please do not think I am not constantly thinking about this. Talking to AOL technicians in Eastern Europe and the Far East does not help, as they never report my anger and requests for a correction to higher ups at AOL. I do not know if gmail higher ups would take corrective action from their end. I am sending a special version, that is easier to read because it uses bold type and italics to Bev and Sue. If others would like the more professional-looking memo of Santina M. Levey's Books - for Researchers, please write directly to me and you will receive if I receive your mails. It will definitely be nicer than the versions in the Arachne Archives. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center In a message dated 9/7/2017 11:57:11 A.M. Hello Devon and everyone Jeri's e-mails do show at Lace - The Mail Archive https://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/ and probably always via the lace-digest. So many of us receive the reflected list (individual messages) that I must say, agreeing with Sue, a gmail address is better for tech. compatibility than one from aol. Re: [lace] 2017 Aravchne Card Exchange
I have to agree with Nancy on this. I was shocked to see the unhappiness rise up so suddenly and wonder if it might have been better if it had been resolved privately between those upset by it? Rumblings across the list are disruptive to the usual kindness and helpfulness I usually see. While I have not signed up lately due to time constraints, Lin was very encouraging and was particularly careful that I receive a bookmark a couple of years ago when my partner was unable to finish on time due to family issues. Perhaps she has gotten so used to handling the other exchanges, it didn't occur to her she might be stepping on toes. Since we try to be so careful of where we "cross and twist or twist and cross," we might try the same with our interactions. Let's get back to "happy lacemaking." :) Liz Roberts in sunny and mild southwest Missouri "From an outside perspective, however, I suggest that "hijacked" is a really loaded word, and maybe should be avoided." - Nancy - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. It is strange that I get Devon's email to the list but not Jeri's. I don't understand why some aol posts work and others don't. They don't even arrive in the spam box, but are just completely missing. Levey's Books - for Researchers By Jeri Ames   If you own any books by Santina Levey, please print this and then place it in your Levey books for future use.  People holding professional positions at the highest level at museums around the world will mourn the loss of Santina Levey. One textile expert at a well-known American museum has written to me:  "I will never forget her taking part in a session I organized for museums in south-eastern England on the identification of lace. She sat at the end of the table, and people brought things from their collections for her to identify which she did with ease, grace, and aplomb! What an amazing scholar and such a wonderful woman."  My memory: In 1982, Santina Levey came to New York for a professional reason, and spoke at the October 16th meeting of the (now defunct) Lace Guild of New York on the topic: Rise and Fall of the Lace Industry, 1760-1914. This was just before her famous 1983 LACE book was published. This Guild was held together for a while by members who worked with laces at the Metropolitan Museum, Museum of the City of New York, Cooper-Hewitt branch of The Smithsonian, Brooklyn Museum, and various smaller museums that had ethnic collections of costumes. It disbanded when there were no volunteers willing to serve as officers.  What is shared below is the list of books authored in whole or in part by Santina Levey that are on the shelves of my private library, because some of you may not know of them. I have called some books to the attention of visiting lace scholars who had no idea of the scope of her research about other historic textiles. Some people may want to learn more after reading this list, and searches on the internet will yield useful information. To read these books: Try InterLibrary Loan at your local or university library.  1. [lace] Santina
Dear Arachnids I met Santina several times, she was a lovely and generous lady. She helped me when I was writing my Bucks books by offering to date the samples I was studying. Some of the replies she gave to comments I made about some that puzzled me, and her suspicion that there were other dates at which techniques had changed, led me to research the very fine and, ultimately, follow the idea that Mechlin had been made in England. Unfortunately, by the time I was sure of my facts she was already too ill. The lace world is now poorer. She is a great loss to us all.
