[lace] Lace Conventions

2018-10-10 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Well said, Catherine. It is lovely, for us who could not be there – to read
all about the Belgium Lace Convention/Congress (is there a difference between
to 2?) Many of us would have Loved to have been there, and reading about it
in detail is the next best thing! Thanks, Anna – and if you have too much
rain in Sydney – just send some down to Melbourne!!

I have just started a tatted piece using the new Lizbeth Metallic thread.
Although it is a bit harder to work with, and needs more careful tensioning,
it is really sparkly and the finished piece will look very nice, I think. It
is ideal for Xmas decorations!!
I am a lot slower when using it, due to having to pay more careful attention
to the tensioning of each stitch, but I think the finished product will be
worth it! (I hope so, anyway!!)

Regards from Liz. In Melbourne, Oz.

Re: [lace] Reports from this summers events

2018-10-10 Thread Jane

Dear Liz,

I received both your messages. I'm on lace-digest though, so I've not
yet seen what arachne received.

Thank you for your message, especially the information about the two
sites. I hope to take my Mother, who is not very mobile these days. I do
agree with you that its an exhibition well worth visiting. It would have
been nice to join a workshop or even to volunteer to demonstrate but I
was so busy in September and I'm only now recovering enough to consider
a trip out!

Its been a bit surprising/disappointing not to see anything about the
exhibition on arachne. I know Jane Atkinson worked hard to publicise the
event and obviously, I read about it in the Lace magazine. I had hoped
that someone would share their impressions.

Thanks again for responding.
Best wishes,
Jane

PS Ebb and Flow Let me know if you want it and I will try to send direct

Re: [lace] Reports from this summers events - Jane Atkinson exhibit (long)

2018-10-10 Thread Jeri Ames
Dear Lacemakers,
I learned from my friend in Hungary last month that she has never opened all
the addresses and photos sent to her, because no one showed her how.  That's
about 20 years of typing and research that never resulted in what was intended
- and, she never told me.  Often, what was sent was web addresses of
Hungarian lacemakers!  Of course, the situation is complicated for me to
rectify because the main language on her computer is Hungarian, but she does
receive direct mail in English, soI have asked her grand nephew, fluent in
English, to show her how to follow through.
This suggests to me there are Arachne members who are not commenting because
they are lacking information about how to do a Search that might inspire them
to share knowledge with us.
If you do not know how to do a Search, please ask someone to show you.  It
opens up a large lace world for you to explore, and sometimes that is what you
need - perhaps you are unable to physically make lace, but would like to learn
more on a lonely day.

If someone sends you addresses (as I often do) and you do not know how to
highlight them and go directly to the sites, please ask someone to show you
how.
Why?
In this case of Jane Atkinson's lace exhibit, there is a time limit.  By the
time you read about it in local guild newsletters and a larger guild's
bulletin, it will have have closed.
Jane Read requested a response about Ebb 'n' Flow, which will close October
28th.  There is still time for people to attend it, and for someone to reply
via Arachne.  A personal review by one of our members is preferable.

>From afar, I can do Searches.  Why don't you try this?  By example, I've
included in many memos where information was found, because I want everyone to
learn how to do basic lace research.  It seems that efforts to
share-by-example are ignored.  You respect teachers and professors (to whom
many of you have paid tuition), but there is much to be gained by reading free
Arachne postings.

In this case:  The person we want to know about is Jane Atkinson.  We know
the exhibit is Ebb 'n' Flow.  Try searching both.  I got the best list of
information by Searching - Jane Atkinson lace exhibit Ebb 'n' Flow.  If you
can work your way through complicated lace patterns, you can all do this.
Someone who experienced the exhibit can write an original response to Arachne,
because her memory has been refreshed.
Atkinson has written an article about her laces.  It is in the Summer issue
of the American IOLI Bulletin, pg. 32, and there are several laces pictured
which are in the Ebb 'n' Flow exhibition.  Also in America - there is a piece
of her lace in the - Lace, not Lace - exhibit.  It is shown and written about
in the exhibit catalog, page 25.
It is normal for bulletins from The Lace Guild (England) to contain an article
from Atkinson, because she has been very generous.  Sometimes memory kicks
in.  It took over an hour, but I found her article in my bulletin files, Ebb
'n' Flow, page 20 of the October 2017 issue.  One year ago.  It gives her
website:  www.contemporarylace.com
Several times per year I recommend membership in The Lace Guild.  It
consistently publishes the best articles, color photography, and most content
(64 pages, in Summer issue) - in 4 bulletins per year.

[lace] Mid-year bookmark exchange

2018-10-10 Thread Janis Savage
Dear Lin
this has been a bad year for me as I had another burglary and my laptop was
stolen again, which means that i have lost so many email addresses.

i wanted to let Ruth Kurz know that after 5 months, I have finally received
the bookmark that she posted to me on 24th May but Ruth's was one of the
addresses that I lost. Please will you let her know that I picked it up from
the post office today. This was a great surprise as our postal workers were on
strike for 3 months (don't ask me what they were striking for!) and there is
still a mountain of mail waiting to be sent out.
The bookmark is superb. the photo on your file does not do it justice. I am
very pleased with it.

I did not join the christmas exchange this year due to the postal problems
and getting my lace act together again. I hope to participate next year
again.
Greetings from Janis Savage in Honeydew, South Africa where summer has arrived
but we have not yet had any summer rains so everything still looks rather
brown and dusty.

[lace] Bruges & World Lace Congress

2018-10-10 Thread phil powis
Conscience duly pricked Jeri. I havent yet written about the Bruges Congress
and the following tour of Flanders for similar reasons to those told by Anna.
The two weeks were just so rewarding and full of wonderful experiences that I
havent settled down enough since returning home to Australia to be able to
write about it.

For now though I do thank Jeri for organising the Arachne dinner in that lovely
elegant room. It wad good to meet other members and learn a bit more about them.

My workshop was with Lauran Sundin, who taught 23 of us with Kim Davis tag
teaching. Lauran taught the techniques she has worked out to make her
spectacular gold wire jewellery. Kim has worked out similar techniques for her
own wire lace work so they were a very good complimentary team. Lauran is in
Australia now and will be teaching several workshops here through October and
November. I have shared advice and information online and in person with
Australian groups who have upcoming workshops. Precision techniques, no
chatter as everyone concentrating hard, who would have thought a simple twist
and cross could be so intense.

More another time

Thank goodness David has also resorted to self publishing and can't imagine
that anyone would purchase these out of print books as the extortionate prices
being advertised on well know internet sites for second hand copies ('I could
sell my copy and retire')! This is what made me decide to take the financial
risk and re-print my own book Needlelace Designs & Techniques on a Print on
Demand basis.

someone 'cashing in' on all the hard work they have done in writing the book in
the first place, sit there in front of a computer screen and watch these
ridiculous prices being advertised, far beyond the pockets of most lacemakers (

author of any out of print lace title before buying a second hand copy at an
extortionate price (unless you are able to find a reasonably priced copy), as
many authors are now self publishing.

As promised I will start by letting people know about the workshops that
were held from the 13-16 August as part of the festival.

Thank you Anna for your lengthy, really interesting account of the workshops in
Brugge, which have left me feeling so envious that I was unable to attend
myself! Everything appears to have been exceptionally well organised and I
look forward to reading your next account of the actual festival. I really do
appreciate the amount of time you have dedicated in recording this event for
the benefit of all Arachne subscribers, also to Jeri for her dedication over
many years, in keeping us all informed of what's going on in the lace world at
large. I can only echo her thoughts as to what has happened to everyone, as
days, even weeks can pass with hardly a posting at all on Arachne, whereas it
could take a considerable amount of time in the past, to plough through the
many postings each morning? We know they are all lurking out there, as
occasionally a subject of interest will come up which will bring many
responses/contributions from those who have been 'hibernating'! We really!
don't want this wonderful lace lifeline to fold due to lack of subscribers
contributing!

Surely Jeri and Anna are not the only lacemakers who attended?
