Thank you very much for your replies.
I can see that we are fortunate here in Spain, as craft shops where to
buy all type of supplies for patchwork, crosstitch, laces, knitting, and
textiles have not disappear yet!
Best regards.

Maybe it was the magazine Bolillos? or Labores del Hogar. This last

one or two times per year (I don't remember now), put to sell an special
issue as a resume of all lace patterns published in all that period.

[lace] split cloth stitch quadrants

2005-02-20 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
http://www.bigginslace.co.uk/bestbookmarks.htm
and several other Torchon patterns on the same site show split cloth stitch
quadrants.
Te pictures are vague. I tried to immitate them as shown on
http://www.xs4all.nl/~falkink/spleten.jpg
It looks like happy a mutant. Can somebody tell or show me how to do these?
Another attempt made te top and bottom to disjunct. So I'm puzzled.
Jo Falkink
Hello all,
Jo I think that there are made as it were spiders figuratively
speaking. I mean that you prepare torchon ground all around the top of
the quadrant, then take 2 central pairs and cross them, these 2 pairs
have become now weavers. Each one works to right and left respectively;
take in one pair from the ground, pin and come back to the middle, then
I THINK THERE IS NO PIN, is just a turning stitch; repeat until
arriving to the wider part of the quadrant, then leave each row a pair
until the end.
It is very resumed, but I hope you can understand me the main idea.
Anyway, tell us the results please!

[lace] pattern copyright and adaptations

2004-08-25 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
Very interested in this thread.
Now here is a thought - I have a pattern which I bought last year for some
free lace. Now the 'pricking' is not a pricking in the true sense of the word -
it is simply a the outline drawing of the pin lines with no holes marked.
(Yes, very free lace indeed). When I make this lace I will obviously be
completing my own interpretation of the lace because how and where I put the pins are
my ideas and also which braids I use within the lace are my own ideas.

So, my question here is where is the copyright?
If I'm right then I own copyright on my finished piece of lace because I have
no choice but to use my interpretation on it but I have no copyright on the
shape (ie outline) of the free lace because that came from the outline that is
the pattern.
There are two different things to take in account about designing
patterns depending on laces: Those who refer to contour and those who
refer to contents.

Witch Stitch Lace is just a shape line with no holes pricked on the
pattern, and of course it is the original design. The way that the lines
are drawn is what makes sense to the overall.
It is more important the lines that the contents in this case. You can
work the braids with different stitches, but I always shall consider
object of the copyright the shape of the pattern, does not matter which
are the adaptations you make, working stitches different than the
original ones.
This rule I think could be also applied on Milanese Lace, and other tape
laces.

This is not the case whereas of Torchon Lace, where the shape or outline
of the pattern is not so important as the contents. The combination of
different stitches is what makes up the design, and what is object of
copyright.
Someone (I do not remember who now, excuse me) has talk about
percentages in similarity. This would be the case.

[lace] Re: Working hands-up (v. long)

2004-08-08 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
Hello all,
Here in Spain, we work since ever hands-up, on a firm long pillow, or a
bolster pillow.

do you do half stitch as TC, instead of CT?

As Gabriele explained, you don't *have to*, but it makes sense, because of the possibility of the bobbins tangling up
either when they're hanging down off your work (you don't pin out
*every* pair you've just passed... Except, maybe, at

the very beginning g), or when they're pinned out in bunches. It's
easier to check that there are *no* twists on a

pair, than to check *how many* are on it.
In general I agree with all what have been said, excepting how
halfstitch can be made.
I usually work CT.
It seems that the pairs have to be tangled, but they are not more than
when you have to check which are the pairs that you have to twist,
before crossing, and many times you choose the wrong pair.

For me is easier to take directly from the pillow the pairs previously
twisted, and if in any moment tangle, is easier too, to find out the
next pair, because you see all the pairs on the pillow, perfectly
twisted pair by pair.
Something important to say is that you have to watch the threads not
the bobbins. It seems a nonsense but it is something that I always
insist to my lacemakers when they are beginners.

Best regards

Thanks,
I subscribed Cipka magazine some months ago, including past issues.
The 7 pages magazine displays 5 or 6 little patterns some ones with

There seems to be interesting reports on different types of lace of
course in Slovak, and MANY PICTURES. This is the most important for me
as they are a reference in very modern and evolved laces and a source
of inspiration.
On the last page, usually are displayed little pictures as samples of
work of different lacemakers. I am not quite sure if the price that
appears besides every picture is for the pattern or for the finished work...
The price for one year subscription is 10 Euros.

Hope this gives an overall view of the magazine

[lace] tape lace

2004-07-01 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
Hello Lorelei, Devon, Ilske,
I have been delayed in replying as I have been compiling information
from different sources.
Ilske wrote:
Could you find out a bit more precise since when the Witch Stitch Lace was made in Spain.
Could this lace belong to the laces they invate at the end of the 19./beginning of 20.cent.?
As far as I know, there is evidence of a revival of this numerical tape
lace late 19th. cent. and first half of 20th., in the South West of
Spain. Whereas it is known too, that during 16th. and 17th. century
there were worked very near this part of Spain numerical multi coloured
laces, very similar to slovenian (Dalmatian laces).
We know too, that during 16th. cent., did exist a great exchange with
Italian art, and Genoes people established in this part of the country,
so reticella and cut point was worked and influenced over the Spanish
embroideries that were made since Middle Ages.
Lorelei wrote:
What possible connection is there between Spanish and Flemish political
links (which did exist, although I'm fuzzy on the dates) and these political
links may have made it possible for the Flemish tape lace tradition to
transfer to Spain.
Spain, geographically speaking is strategically located has been since
ever influenced by different cultures as Byzantine, Arabic, Moorish in
the first centuries to European since 14th. century in advance.
Marriages among european monarchies produced an important cultural
exchange and laces were a sign of luxury and competitiveness.
During the reign of Catholic Kings (15th. century), they married their 5
sons with different european princess and princes (Portugal, Austria,
England) and connected with Flanders, Brussels, Italy and England.
On the other hand, commerce was very important among Spain and Amber's
and in the second half of 17th. cent. Spain imported great quantities of
lace from Flanders and late in the 1700 from France. At that time the
french cravat (lace made) was the new fashion among the men in the court.

Although important quantities of lace were imported, here in Spain a
great tradition of textile arts have been alive: Gold and silver
passementeries, moorish fringes, macramé, Point de España (gold and
silver bobbin lace)and later in the 19th. and 20th., the Catalonian Blonda.
Spain is a great unknown, because the most finest embroideries and
laces have been made some times by the ladies in the courts, many other
by peasant in their homes, for their own use, and nuns in the convents
for church purposes. No patterns or books were published, so we have
evidences by literature: The Quixote, or ancient royal manuscripts.

[lace] romanian point lace

2004-06-29 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
This is the information taken from Peasant and erudite arts and
textiles in Spain APECYL 1999, about mac-rame:

The name of mac-rame is arabic in origin and means knot. The knots
are made with hands and it is originated by the Assyrian people.
Macrame had been worked by all Spanish communities since 15th. to 17th.
centuries, over all in Castilla and Leon.
The arabesques were the main design and they have been found many
pieces worked with this technique for church purposes. During the 18th.,
19th. and 20th. centuries, one of the more extended uses for macrame was
that of towel fringes.

Greetings from Barcelona.
Carolina. Spain.

From: Mary L. Tod [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Janice, I've been told by a woman here who teaches Romanian Point
Lace that, in Europe, the name for this type of needle lace based on
a crochet cord *is* macrame.

That's also what it's called in Anna magazine, a European needlework

[lace] plastic for prickings

2004-05-30 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
This brings to mind the solution suggested when this subject was last on
the list (two years ago, maybe?) There are little devices sold in craft
shops which laminate anything you want
Whereas, my question is: Is this laminate shine or matte?
It is known that shined plastic is not good for sight, specially under
sunlight or a direct lamplight.

[lace] lace weddings

2004-05-26 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
Hello all,
It is evident that things cannot be made late in night, when once feels
tired and sleepy.
So, thank you Bjarne for informing me that the lady wearing a very
nice lace collar was H. M. the Queen of Denmark, Marguerite.

I have NOW included too, the picture of the scale sailing ship that
Camariñas has given as wedding gift to the Prince Felipe. It's known the
enthusiast that the Prince feels for nautical sports and the lace
tradition of Camariñas, fishing and lacing village.

For all who have asked about the Mantillas and Spanish combs wore by
H.M. Spanish Queen Sofia and her daughter Elena:
The mantilla was used by women in general as an evolution in fashion
from cloth to lace, during 17th. cent.
It is in the 18th. cent. when the mantilla begin to be worn by
aristocrats and royal court, and the Queen Elisabeth II (1833-1868) who
really introduced the use of Spanish mantilla as ornament and wore it
very often.
At her death, the fashion declined and now the Queen Sofia wear Spanish
Mantilla in special occasions and the Andalusian women show off it, at
Holy Week Processions.
Usually the mantilla is worked in blonde, chantilly or embroidered tulle.
The threads used: very very fine cotton or silk, some times two colors:
gray and black.
White or ecru mantillas were worn only by young ladies and girls to go
to church.
I hope that all this makes sense, I am not very good at English

Thank you all for your interest and greetings from Barcelona.

[lace] lace and weddings

2004-05-24 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
Hello all,
Thank you Antje, for the detailed description you made of the different
laces exhibited in the Royal Wedding.

As a complementary information, I have put on my web some closed
pictures of the veil that the Princess Letizia wore, as well as the
Spanish mantillas that H.M. the Queen Sophia and her daughter Infanta
Elena showed off in the Royal Ceremony.

Camariñas, the traditional lace location, have given as a wedding
present a wooden hand made ship which sails are all made with bobbin
lace. I have included the picture too.

Enjoy them!

On the other hand, among the people which were demonstrating I was

[lace] Finca cotton thread

2004-04-27 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
I got some Finca cotton thread from Biggins the other day and I
think it is a beautiful thread to work with, so easy to keep a neat
tension. Has anyone else tried this thread?

Yes Rikki I know it very well and this is the thread I use when I work
with cotton threads. It is not only cheaper than others but the relation
quality/price is excellent. The thread is sensitive to dryness and maybe
in some circumstances it breaks, whereas I am usually working with #80
the two latest years Witch Stitch Lace and rarely breaks.
Presencia also manufactures Fincrochet which is the equivalent to
Mercer Crochet Cadena (Fabra Coats) and it is excellent with a beautiful
 shinning and neat lace result.

[lace] passementerie

2004-04-12 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
Hello all,
The word passementerie in French possibly comes from the original:
pasamanería that in Spanish refers to ribbons and trims prior to
laces as we know today.
The meaning of the word literally expresses to pass something between
hands, so in this case the ribbons and trims made only with hands.

Here in Spain were made from time immemorial. It is known that an edict
of the King Alfonso IX, in 1212 ordered to put aside superfluities of
gold and silver ornaments. But it is sure that the influence that Spain
received from oriental cultures before this date , have contributed to
development of this craft.
In the splendid library that Tess and the Professor have provided us,
you will find more information at this respect, as well as other laces
that were made in Spain in very old times:
Lace, Puntas and Passementerie by Bernhard and Ellen M. Whishaw.
and...of course much better explained than I could do in English.

Best regards.

[lace] Torchon history

2004-03-11 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
Hello all,
As far as I know, Point of Spain laces were worked ones in torchon and
other as plaited laces with gold and silver threads. (S. XV, XVI and
XVII), so at that time torchon technique existed yet.
You can find some information on the web:

Museo del Encaje de Castilla y Leon:

Though it is in Spanish, there are some interesting pictures, among them
one worked in torchon with gold thread.
A very synthesized history of lace in Spain can be found in my page:

[lace] famous lacemakers

Now I don't know famous lacemakers nor if they were men or women, but I had

As far as I know, here in Catalonia (Spain), some men were the lace
designers while women were the workers of lace. I consider whereas, the
work of the women more important, as it is more difficult to adapt a
design to lace that just to draw the pattern.
And I can add too, that we know the name of the men but not the name of
the women who worked the laces.

[lace] Dissertation about lace marketing

2003-11-04 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
Look at the numbers Carolina (Gallego) gives us when she posts about the Spanish events --
hundreds come, with almost no enticement (vendors, yes; but not much
in the way of workshops,

if the whole thing takes place in one day).

Usually there are lace day events once a year in many villages and
cities of Catalonia, lets say 70 from May to December.(I do not know in
the rest of Spain, but I think they are not so many). The number of
participants to these Events depends of the cities and always is
proportional to their inhabitants.

There is a Great Lace Day Event every year, that groups lacemakers from
all over Catalonia and some others who come from others parts of the
country. This year the number of lacemakers working open air was of
4.000. The lacemakers subscribed to the Lace Guild have reached the
quantity of 3.500.

These numbers have been published in the Bulletin of our Lace Guild.

To complete this information I have to say we live in Catalonia about 6
millions of people.

Regards.

[lace] Lacemaker monument

2003-10-29 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
Hi Jean and Clay and all who have been interested on this thread:

Up to the moment it has not been published any picture of the lacemaker
monument in Arenys de Munt, whereas I have contacted the Town Hall and I
hope I could have any in the next days.
I have to say that the village is divided in two zones and Town Halls.
The upper zone of the village is called Arenys de Munt, and just beside
the sea is located the village of Arenys de Mar. This one, placed some
time ago (I do not remember exactly when), a monument to lacemaker too.
So, I suppose there has been a healthy jealousy between both of them.
As soon as I have the pictures, I am going to hang them on the web to
share with all of you.

Regards from Barcelona.

Carolina.

[lace] Lacemaker monument

2003-10-28 Thread Carolina G. Gallego
Hi all,
It is not very usual that nowadays we can read on a newspaper that a
monument
to the lacemaker has been placed in the village of Arenys, 40 Km. from
Barcelona.
The village was a well known lace manufacturing center in the 17th.
century, and
its lacemakers have been a reference to all lacemakers in Catalonia.
The monument has been constructed in granite, by Japanese sculptor
Etsuro Sotoo
and assigned by the Arenys Lace Guild. It represents a lacemaker
working. Weights
24 Tn. and it is 3,20 mts. high. The cost has been 60.000 Euros.

A good new without doubt.
