[lace] Miniature lace pillows
I am interested in miniature versions of things. I have seen some lace pillows that are purely ornamental. What do we think is the smallest pillow and accompanying bobbins, pins, thread, etc that can be used (if with great difficulty)? I have seen a picture of one that fitted in the palm of the hand that included the lace. What are these made from? What about the bobbins? Over to you all. [lace] Sarah Dazeley hanging bobbin
Hi, Does anyone own a hanging bobbin for Sarah Dazeley? Or even a photo of one? I can’t find one anywhere. Re: [lace] Franz Muller Hanging bobbin. Buyer beware
Without looking at anything except the auction page, I might buy it for a pound or two as a novelty. (If it had been Sarah Dazeley then I would pay more because her final murder was in my family village!) It doesn’t look authentic at all. It is a shame that the maker couldn’t use their skills for an original design as that would probably be more profitable. Re: [lace] Cecil Higgins
Thank you, Louise. It was certainly time to update their display system. I do think it is a great shame that so much of the lace has now been lost to most visitors. It is great that they have occasional events though casual visitors are unlikely to know about them. I looked at the Luton website as well and again lace has disappeared from their information. I cannot see how these laces and associated equipment will be available to future generations and that is a tragedy. I understand that financial concerns drive more 'popular' exhibits. How many other elements of local history have disappeared over the years? In the meantime, I won't need to wend my way through Bedford any more - I took my driving test there but otherwise Cambridge was the family's preferred location. [lace] Bone bobbins
I cannot make lace at the moment and don't know whether I ever will again. Therefore I've been thinking that I should put some of my best bobbins on display to admire. This brought me to wonder about bobbins during the days of professional lacemakers. I know that there were bone bobbins in England but what about on the continent? If they existed, what type(s) were they? If they didn't, why not? [lace] Simple needlelace question
Dear Needlelace Gurus, I have a really basic question. I've received conflicting answers from 'experts' so I'm now confused. When you are making the 'buttonhole' stitch from right to left, is it supposed to look identical to when made from left to right or is it supposed to be the opposite? I do hope that this makes sense! Many thanks in advance ... Regards, Helen. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Book Search
Hi, I'm really hoping that someone out there in Arachne land can help me. I've been searching for a copy of a book for years but have never found a copy. Does anyone know of a copy lurking out there in need of a good home? The book is: Alte Flandrische Spitze by Erdmute Wesenberg Many thanks in advance, - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] demo followup
I might not be able to quite match that, depending on how early in the 50s but I come close - and was probably closest to a teacher for at least some of those years. My grandmother was making lace as a hobby from long before I was born so I saw it being made from an incredibly early age. Sadly, she wasn't willing to teach me as she did my elder sisters and I didn't get to attend my first class until around 33 years later. Re: [lace-chat] Chip and pin cards
Hi Jean, I bought loads of groceries from Sainsburys on multiple occasions using my Canadian credit card. There was no issue at any time. This was during my visits at the end of last year and early this year. I didn't have a problem using my card at any shop all over England. [lace-chat] Dutch Book Question - Thanks
Thank you to those of you who kindly provided suggestions as to the title/author in answer to my book question. Apparently the answer is Abeltje by Annie M. G. Schmidt. I will pass this information on to my relative - she will be thrilled to know the answer! What a wonderful group of people we have on this list :-) Regards, Helen (in even sunnier and hotter Vancouver, BC on the west coast of mainland Canada) To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace-chat] Dutch Book Question
Hi, I am hoping that you wonderful people can help with identifying a book for me. A relative of mine (by marriage) grew up in Holland having been born there in 1946. She remembers reading a book as a child and can't remember the title/author/whatever. She thinks it was about a boy in a lift and the lift didn't stop when it reached the top floor so the boy had adventures as a result. Can anyone help at all? Thanks in advance, Helen (in horribly hot Vancouver, BC on the west coast of mainland Canada - but at least it is the weekend :-) ) To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[lace] PNLC 2008 - Tacoma
I would like to publicly thank the organisers for the recent wonderful Pacific Northwest Lace Conference. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed myself as well as learning lots and coming away with a lot of goodies :-) I took the Binche/Flanders course with Sally Schoenberg and, as expected, it was a combination of fun and a lot of great information and assistance. I am looking forward to my next class with her, whenever that will be! The conference itself went very smoothly, at least from my perspective. There had obviously been a lot of hard work both beforehand and during the conference. The Lacemakers of Puget Sound did a fantastic job and in particular Lauren Snyder and Julie Hendrick. Well done and thank you again! I was also able to spend lots of money at the lace day on the Saturday and found several books that were on my list as well as Sally's lovely DVD set on Flanders. Now to save up for the next outing which may be IOLI either (or both?!) in Los Angeles or Portland. [lace] Pacific Northwest Lace Conference 2011 - Vancouver, BC
*** Hot off the Press News *** I am very excited, as well as a bit apprehensive, to announce that the next Pacific Northwest Lace Conference, to be held in June 2011, will be in Vancouver, British Columbia on the west coast of mainland Canada. So far there are only three of us doing the organising but we will do our best :-) The theme for the conference will be Beside the Seaside. There will be a contest during the conference for any piece that could be considered to fit into the theme with various prizes on offer. Any style of lace will be acceptable including (but not limited to) bobbin lace, needlelace, tatting, knitted lace. I would like to encourage everyone to enter as we would love to put on a great display and provide plenty of choice for the awards. At the moment the intention is to allow entries from both conference attendees and non-attendees. There will be a special prize category though for those submitted by people who also attend the conference. Those not attending will need to provide appropriate packaging and funds to allow the items to be returned (or we get to keep them!) The details have yet to be determined (not least because I hope to convince someone else to take responsibility for this bit!) Now for the bit where we need some help. Please contact me for more information if you are interested in any (or all?!) of the following categories: 1) Teaching a class 2) Being a vendor 3) Helping out in some way with the organising before and/or during the conference 4) Providing, as an individual or as a group, favours, door prizes, raffle prizes, etc. for us to hand out - three of us won't be able to produce all these as well as doing everything else (and trying to work for a living) so any offers of help would be really appreciated. You will get the appropriate recognition during the event (or it can be anonymous of course). We would also like to hear from anyone who has suggestions on possible favours - it would be lovely to provide something a bit different that would also be appreciated (and not break the bank for a group that has no funds!) Watch for more information as we get closer to the conference date - and probably further requests for help. If you do have any questions, suggestions, advice or whatever then please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you all in advance, and I hope to see you all here in Vancouver in 2011 :-) Helen. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
