Re: [lace] 3 pairs Flanders

Please, what's an apple doll? Is it a doll carved out of an apple, or a
collection of apples stuck together to make a doll, or something else
altogether? And do they have to be dressed as well?

dear ruth
an apple doll is a doll made and dressed from a dried apple
they are small and their faces are wrinkled and they look like they are
hundreds of years old
they are made here in the hills of virginia and west virginia and probably
other close states too
they are sold dressed any way the maker decides and they are really cute
hope this helps
yours in lace

re: [lace] 3 pairs Flanders (lace)

2003-10-12 Thread Bev Walker
Hi everyone

If any of you are not on 'chat' I have moved a response of mine to
the language usage discussion, formerly in the 3 pairs Flanders thread, to
chat. There you can read my deathless chatter on 'exhibit/exhibition' - in
case anyone is hopeful that '3 pairs Flanders' is still about lace..here
goes:

I have been messing around with the unit of movements that I refer to as
bobbin lace with 3 pairs, following, more or less, the technique of '3
pairs Flanders.' (you make a CTC braid with the 3 pairs, no pins, except
at picots and where you will join. A variation with half-stitch it
possible; I saw a necklace made this way, a picture at a website, url
unknown). Tension must be even to put curves where you want them. I work
on a bolster.

My current project is converting a drawing of a whorl of rhododendron
leaves to lace. Why had I chosen leaves - they are simply shaped and
graceful, looked lovely with the shine of rain, and effective in 3 pairs,
if boring after the second leaf. I'm trying different fillings with each
leaf, will set the whole against a fabric background and hang it by my
computer to bask in my own praise (supposing I get the project finished).

the lumbermen's contests. And each little item in, say, the craft show
(or craft exhibit) would be called ... wait for it ... an item in the
craft show.
In the lingo of the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition (not very far from
Vancouver, BC), individual items are always called 'entries'. Even when
they're only there for display, and no competition is involved.
Even my little corner with lace samples, books, pillowstand, pillow and
myself demonstrating, has been called an 'entry' ;-(
