[lace] Univ. of Arizona Lace Digital Archives - Chinese Laces
Dear Susan, Yes, there is way too much to know about lace (and textiles, in general). Since I've seen no Arachne responses to your inquiry about "Chinese laces", please tell us more about what you wish to understand: the author/document/page(s) where you found the referenced subject. I'll take a look, and perhaps can find more recent books that can be of help to you - in my private library of books still covered by copyrights. Here is a repeat of the direct access address for laces: http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/lace.html Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center - In a message dated 9/12/2016 2:50:08 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, hottl...@neo.rr.com writes: There are references to "Chinese laces" that I do not understand but perhaps someone will enlighten or I will find the answer in subsequent issues. I'd like to think that Arachne will remain relevant because we support it with questions & comments. There is way too much to know & no single lace maker is likely to be fluent in all forms of lace, just as a linguist might know five languages rather than thirty. That makes Arachne a logical information hub for what we do. It's a pearl of great value. Re: [lace] Digital archives university of arizona
Could the proper url for the weaving and lace archives be included at the bottom of our posts the same as the flicker pix one. Lorri 'don't panic' - Sue Babbs is right about the url for digital archives on weaving and lace. The other is the university's main page, where you can find the digital archives by using the search link there, which is the google engine, same as what you used ;) On Sat, Sep 10, 2016 at 9:09 AM, Susanwrote: > When I entered cs.arizona.edu, I got a completely different page & > couldn't find the Digital Archives. Looks to me as if it's still there... http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/lace.html Happy browsing to check, Susan! I don't have time to go play there today Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com -Original Message- From: Susan Sent: Saturday, September 10, 2016 11:09 AM To: lace@arachne.com Subject: [lace] Digital archives university of arizona Hello All! Please say it isn't so! Reading Mary Corbet's Needlenthread blog this morning, she said it was missing. When I Googled, I found the site & was able to open random documents. When I entered cs.arizona.edu, I got a completely different page & couldn't find the Digital Archives. Not a techie here, so have no clue what's up. Is there a cyberspace explanation? Should I be downloading more lace files in anticipation that the Google link that is working will soon disappear? Many thanks for suggestions & counseling from the experts! [lace] Digital Archives
Tess has informed me that there are a number of things that my memory appears to be faulty about regarding the Professor and his site. Notably, John Cropper saw the professor through his final illness and took over the site afterward. I recalled someone named Chris, but we think that this is Kris Bruland who has been handling the sale of the finished CDs. Apparently, I am mistaken about the Professor receiving any kind of financial help from the University of Arizona for the site. She shared with me the following memory of the Professor: Once time on Ebay I saw that someone was trying to sell the material collected on the site for money and I wrote the prof and told him about it, thinking he would feel that he was being robbed. Not so, he said that they were always trying to do that and that it didn't matter to him, his idea being that all he was doing was meant to be shared by everyone even the baddies. What a good guy he was--a real teacher! I learned so much from him, and will always be grateful for his tutelage and patience. I know we all remember him for all of his efforts to provide us with the wonderful gift of the Digital Archives. His good work lives on. Many thanks to Tess, as well, for her tireless scanning efforts. Devon - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Digital Archives
Kris Bruland originally had a separate web site: Handweaving.net Hand Weaving and Draft Digital Archive Home http://www.handweaving.net/Home.aspx I'm not sure if he linked it to Ralph Griswold's site while he was still alive or not. At one point some members of Complex Weavers were adding to the Digital Archives site but the work apparently is grueling and time consuming. It's nice to know a site weavers find indispensable is appreciated by people in other fields. Cynthia who made bobbin lace before she learned to weave. Re: [lace] Digital archives - url
Hello Ann and everyone The digital archives pertaining to lace are listed here, with links to each: http://www.cs.arizona.edu/patterns/weaving/topic_lace.html and here http://www.handweaving.net/DAHome.aspx and you can buy CDs of them here, for instance if downloading isn't an option. http://www.handweaving.net/Store.aspx While I'm at it, we have a lace gallery at the handweaving.net site which can certainly use more entries, nice if sourced from an archive doc., here http://www.handweaving.net/GalleryList.aspx On 8/23/07, ann.humphreys [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Can someone explain how to use the digital archives people keeping referring to please, and is there an index somewhere of all the lace literature to be found there. -- Bev in Sooke BC (on beautiful Vancouver Island, west coast of Canada) - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And there are also the Arachne archives at http://www.mail-archive.com/lace%40arachne.com/ No index as such, but there is a search option. This searches throught the text as well as the titles for the key words entered.
